History of Oregon

MR. AND MRS. SAMUEL S. SHIELDS

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel S. Shields have been prominently connected with the fruit raising and fruit shipping interests of Oregon for a number of years and have been instrumental in developing a business of very substantial proportions. Working together they have promoted their fortunes and the word helpmate has never been a mere idle term as applied to Mrs. Shields, for she has cooperated with her husband in all things that have tended to add to their property holdings and the development of their fortunes. Mrs. Shields is now the manager of the Shields Fruit Company of Freewater, Umatilla County. He was born in Butler county, Pennsylvania, in 1861, a son of James and Amanda (Smith) Shields. Spending his youthful days at the place of his nativity he completed his education by graduation from the Grove City College of Pennsylvania, and in March, 1884, he made his way to the west, locating first in Pudget Sound, where he remained for a short time. He afterwards removed to Weston, Umatilla county, and taught school at Blue Mountain on Dry Creek. He took up a ranch in Morrow county, Oregon, in 1886, and through the intervening period has been identified with ranching, grazing and fruit raising interests.

Mr. Shields was married in Pendleton, Oregon, to Miss Carrie M. Gibbons, a daughter of George and Catherine (Reichert) Gibbons. Mrs. Shields was also born in Butler county, Pennsylvania. After they were married they removed to a homestead claim and proved up on the property, adding some improvements thereto. In the summer of 1889 they settled near Pendleton, where both taught school amd in Morrow county both Mr. and Mrs. Shields were also identified with the profession of teaching.

After leaving Pendleton they removed to Weston, Umatilla county, and Mr. Shields engaged in buying wheat here and also taught school. In 1893 he took up his abode in Milton, Umatilla county, purchasing four and a half acres of land on which he began raising fruit, making his first shipment of strawberries in 1894. His shipments increased each year as he placed more land under cultivation and he now has twenty-seven acres in a fine apple orchard and seventeen acres in a prune orchard. Mrs. Shields was his able associate and assistant in all the work from the time they began raising and buying fruit, which they first sold by peddling to local customers but subsequently began making shipments. In 1898 they purchased a building used as a packing plant and shipped from that point, adding to the building as more space was demanded. In 1917 the present building was purchased, and it was about that time that Mrs. Shields sold her half interest in the business, but she is still the owner of seven hundred and sixty acres of fine wheat and stock land. The property holdings of Mr. and Mrs. Shields also include a half section of wheat land in Morrow county, and Mrs. Shields is the owner of the residence which they occupy. Mr. Shields is also a director of the Farmers' Security Bank. The labors of the one have fully supplemented and rounded out the labors of the other and theirs has been a notable success.

To Mr. and Mrs. Shields were born six children: Frank W., manager of Valley Fruit Company of Walla Walla, has a seventy-five acre fruit ranch, doing a one-half million dollar business yearly; Winnie, who is now the wife of Stillman Dempsey; Eva, deceased; Mildred, the wife of Floyd Coffman; Ferne, the wife of B. R. Byerley; and George D., of Walla Walla. Mr. Shields gives his political support to the republican party, thus manifesting his preference concerning many vital questions and interests of the day. He belongs to the Independant Order of Odd Fellows and both he and his wife are consistent members of the Presbyterian church. They enjoy the highest regard and goodwill of all who know them and they have a legion of warm friends in this section of the state

OBIT - no name for paper - 1939

PIONEER PACKER PASSES FRIDAY

Samuel Sloan Shields, 77, pioneer fruit packer of Milton and long-time resident of Umatilla County, passed away at his home Friday following an extended illness.

Born in Butler County, PA - May 31, 1861, he came west in 1884 and was married in Pendleton, to Carried Gibbons, Sept. 18, 1886, the event being a double wedding with Representative and Mrs. Walter M. Pierce. Mrs. Shields was a childhood sweetheart who reached Pendleton just two days prior to the wedding.

Following the wedding the Shields went to Weston where she took her teacher's examination from Mr. Pierce who was then county school superintendent. Her first school was a few miles from Pendleton. Later the couple moved to Eightmile Creek in Morrow County where both taught school for several years;, Mrs. Shields in the Liberty school and Mrs. Shields in the Coffee school.

In 1889 they moved back to Umatilla County living in Pendleton and teaching in various nearby schools. In 1893, after first spending several months at Helix, they moved to Weston, coming to Milton 46 years ago.

Mr. Shields entered the fruit industry and built up one of the largest packing concerns in the district. They first began shipping fruit in 1894, Mr. Shields doing the selling and Mrs. Shields doing the buying. The Shields packing plant is the outgrowth of this small beginning.

During their life in the community both have been active in community and civic affairs. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1936.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie, two sons, Frank of Yakima and George of Spokane; three daughters, Mrs. F.T. Coffman and Mrs. Stillman Dempsey of Milton, and Mrs. B.R. Byerley of Yakima, 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Federated Church with Dr. W.H. Bleakney in charge. Honorary pall bearers were R.D. Monahan, Clyde Harris, L.B. Kicker, Robert Still, Barlow Clark, Ray Edwards, Fred Groth, Frank McSherry, C.J. McKenzie, and Ewing Stephens. Active pall bearers were Fred Shields, Walter Shields, Roy Shields, Eugene Shields, Elgin Coffman and Louis Byerly, all grandsons of the deceased.

Burial was in Walla Walla.

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Walter Shields, who played a leading role in Washington's apple industry during a period of technological change that solidified the state's

position as the nation's top producer, died Sunday, relatives said. He was 92.

No cause of death was given.

Shields was secretary-manager of the Yakima Valley Growers-Shippers Association from 1952 to his retirement in 1989.

A native of Milton-Freewater, Ore., Shields succeeded his father, Frank Shields, as head of the trade group, responsible for marketing, keeping statistical information, lobbying on industrial and unemployment insurance issues and working on transportation.

He also was involved in such critical advances as the widespread adoption of controlled-atmosphere storage.

During Shields' tenure the state's apple production more than doubled, reaching 80 million boxes.

YAKIMA - F. Walter (Walt) Shields, Jr. passed away July 4, 2004 at the age of 92, with his wife, Helen Jewett-Shields, by his side. He was born February 27, 1912 in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, to Frank Walter, Sr. and Bessie (Jones) Shields. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He graduated from Walla Walla High School and attended Whitman College where he was affiliated with Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

The family moved to Yakima where he met and married Helen W. Stevens on May 1, 1934 and they had three children. With his father, they started Rainier Printing in 1935. Frank, Sr. left the company to become secretary-manager of the Yakima Valley Traffic Association which later became Yakima Valley Growers-Shippers. Walt was elected to succeed him in June of 1953. That was a position he held until 1989. One of his greatest accomplishments was saving the members of the association $1,000,000 in State Industrial insurance. After retirement they traveled to the Palm Springs area where he became a member of Desert Island Golf and Country Club.

His life-long interest was golf. He had been a longtime member of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association. Walt always said if the professional money had been there he would have become a pro. His first trophy won was the President's Cup in 1929 at the age of 17 at the Walla Walla Country Club.

He was extremely proud of winning the Northwest Pro-Am Tournament in 1954. He held the record for low score at Salishan for many years. He was city champion and club champion numerous times. Later in life, he was proud that he shot his age each year. Walt was a lifetime member of Yakima Country Club, First Presbyterian Church and former member of Kiwanis and Elks.

On December 28, 1997 he married Helen N. Jewett. Although their time together was too short, they shared much joy and happiness in his closing years. His family appreciates the loving care she gave to Walt and would like to express their gratitude for all she did.

Also surviving his is daughter and son-in-law, Judi and Nash Aguirre of Yakima; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Jerry Price of Yakima; daughter-in-law, Pat Shields of Bend, OR; brother, Eugene of Yakima; sisters-in-law, Jean Shields of Yakima and Hazel Shields of Richland. Surviving grandchildren are Ed Aguirre, Sandy Heise, Mike Aguirre, Brent Shields, Karin Anderson, Joe Shields, Janet McKay, Lisa McCombs, Sheryl Archer and Jennifer Redmon. He had 11 great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.

Walt was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen W., son Frank III, brothers Fred and Ray.

Memorial services celebrating Walt's life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Keith and Keith Terrace Heights Chapel. A reception will immediately follow at the Keith and Keith Reception Center. Private interment at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Memorial Foundation, or Evans Golf Scholarship for Junior Golfers, c/o Yakima County Club, 500 Country Club Drive, Yakima, WA 98901.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (today), at Keith and Keith Funeral Home on Ninth Avenue.
