R. L. Hubbs, Riverside, Calif., who left Walla Walla in 1916, is back for a family reunion to be held Saturday after his appearance at the 11 a.m. service at the Milton-Freewater Seventh-day Adventist Church. He will occupy the pulpit for that service. He brought here from Eugene where he had been flown by his younger brother, Jack Hubbs of Seattle.

The Californian was a school administrator 35 years before his retirement. He taught at the Athena High School and served as athletic director there. He was a baseball pitcher in the old Blue Mountain league before World War I in which he served. He taught in this area again after the war and with his wife graduated from Walla Walla College in 1927. He now lectures widely up and down the Pacific coast.

Also attending the reunion will be Kyle Hubbs, Milton-Freewater; Z. R. Hubbs, College Place and O.F. Hubbs and their wives. Mr and Mrs O. F. Hubbs, who lived on the new Milton-Freewater highway, will be dinner hosts to the rest of the family Saturday.

Jack Hubbs, former administrator of the Walla Walla General Hospital, has just finished a five-day stop smoking program at Bellevue. He is also appearing at high schools counseling with youngsters about marijuana and heroin usage.

Lydia Hubbs

MILTON-FREEWATER -- Lydia P. Hubbs, 80, Milton-Freewater died in a Walla Walla Hospital yesterday.

She was borrn Sept 23 1892 in Sara (Clark County), Wash and , at the age of five, moved with her family to Eastern Washington. She was educated at the Walla Walla Academy and attended the Normal School at Cheney.

She married Alaud Hubbs in the Milton-Freewater area. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1970 at their new home on the new Milton Highway and Crockett Road.

After 42 years, Mrs. Hubbs retired from teaching in 1957, 21 of these years in the Eastside School and the remainder in the Tum-A-Lum. Dry Creek, Adams, Ukiah, Hillsboro, Ore. and Rock creek and Dayton, Wash. In 1952, she was honored as the outstanding kindergarten teacher in Oregon.

She was a life-long member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and a member of the Oregon Retired Teacher's Assn.

survivors include her husband, Alaud, at the home: five sisters, Mrs. David Schlotthauer of Moscow; Mrs. Leah Hatchkiss of Vernonia, Ore.; Mrs Chris Erickson of Kennewick; Mrs. Clyde Skiller of Milton-Freewater and Mrs. Fred Austin of Seattle; six nephews, eleven nieces and several great nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Munselle-Rhodes Chapel in Milton-Freewater with interment in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Mr and Mrs Oland Hubbs... goldenweds

Approximately 200 friends and relatives gathered at the Crocket Road home, Milton-Freewater, of Mr. and Mrs. Oland F Hubbs last Sunday to help them celebrate their golden anniversary.

They were married in a garden setting July 14, 1920, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John J Hickman. Hickman, who gave the bride away, was at the reception, as were Mrs. Cecil Shanke of College place, a bridesmaid; Kyle Hubbs and Evert Miller who were groomsmen at the wedding: and Mrs Juanita (Hubbs) Harting, flower girl.

Mrs Hubbs wore her original bridal gown which she had fashioned 50 years ago wand a white Cattleya orchid, a gift from her husband.

Mrs. Art Rassmussen and Mrs. Jack Widman served the wedding cake, which was made by Mrs. Hubbs. Others assisting were Mrs. Dale Grogan, punch; Mrs. Clyde Skiller, receiving guests: Mrs. Jean Holaday, guest book; and Mrs. Jack Woodhall, floral arrangements. Mrs Norman Seibold furnished background music at the organ and accompanied Wesley Holaday at the piano for his trumpet solo.

Mrs Hubbs is a retired school teacher, having taught 42 consecutive years. many of her former pupils were there to share in the festivities. Hubbs, a long time nurseryman and fruit grower, began his career as a teenager at the Milton Nursery and with his own fruit farm some 50 years ago. Both are long time members of Milton Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Out of town guests coming from a distance were John J Hickman and Ellsworth Hickman, Prineville; Mr and Mrs Harold Corwin, Vancouver, Wash.: Mr and Mrs. Fred Austin, Elder and Mrs Jack Hubbs, Miss Winifred Price, Mr and Mrs Will Timmons, and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Gollinger, all of Seattle; Mr and Mrs Robert Bishop and daughter, Kellogg; Mr and Mrs Kenneth Powell, Port Orchard; Mr. and Mrs Paul Yearout and children, Yakima; Mrs Lily Dixon, Sunnyside; Mrs. Laurida Anderson, Arlington, Calif.; Mr and Mrs Art Rasmussen, Tacoma; and many from surrounding cities of Walla Walla and College Place, Weston and other area towns. Elder Romeo Hubbs sent greeting via long distance telephone call.

Hubbs to Head Hospital Here

L. E. "Jack" Hubbs of College Place has been named manager of Walla Walla General hospital. The announcement came after a meeting of the hospital's board of directors during the past week.

He will succeed W. E. Guthrie who will become manager at Paradise Valley sanitarium, National City, Calif, near San Diego.

Hubbs, credit manager of the hospital since January 1948, was born and raised at Milton-Freewater and is a graduate of mac-Hi and business college here. He also attended Walla Walla College. He has lived at College Place for 18 years.

Hubbs Speaker For Adventist Church in M-F

MILTON-FREEWATER -- Jack Hubbs of Seattle, medical secretary in the Washington converence of Seventh-day Adventists, will speak at the 11 a.m. regular church service of the Milton-Freewater Seventh-day Adventist Church Saturday, Dec 24.

This will be a homecoming for Hubbs as he is a native of Milton-Freewater and was raised in this area. Two of his brothers reside in Milton-Freewater: H.F. Hubbs and Kyle Hubbs. Another brother is Z. R. Hubbs, College Place, and Mrs Orville (Juanita) Harting of Dayton is a sister.

Hubbs is director of the 5-Day Stop Smoking program and Smokers Dial in Seattle. "During the last 18 months more than 200,000 people have called my office for help in breaking the smoking habit," he advises.
