Notes for WILLIAM HARRISON DICKSON:

Excerpt from Unknown article on the bank history of Pendleton, Oregon.

By the fall of 1932 Pendleton was without a banking concern of any kind. This was the Bank holiday, declared by Presidential order, and banks everywhere closed their doors for specified periods.

For nine months, until the summer of 1932 the city issued a negotiable scrip, with which all city employees were paid and which merchants accepted as a legal medium of exchange. Charles Burnett was city recorder at this time and H.W. Dickson was city treasurer.

Dickson, former manager of the Pendleton branch of the United States National Bank of Portland, is dean of banking business in Umatilla County, having had the longest term of service of any living banker in Pendleton or other communities. He was a banker for 44 years; served on committees of the Oregon State Bankers Association.

In 1933, on July 10, the United States National Bank of Portland opened a branch in Pendleton and in October of that year the First Nation Bank of Portland also opened a branch of which Will Glass was manager for many years. Glass is close behind Dickson in the number of years he was in the banking business.

Dear Mr. Caverhill:

In April while we were visiting my mother, Mrs. Ida Dixon, she took us to Dorion Park.

I have never seen anything nicer and more impressive than what has been accomplished there.

I am sure that we all realize the hardships the pioneers and first families endured to reach your wonderful valley, at the foot of the Blue Mountains.

So, in memory of my grandparents and my father, I would very much like their names to be inscribed on one of the steps, to read as follows:

John L. and Elizabeth Dickson - 1907

William H. Dixon - 1907

I am enclosing my check in the amount of $50.00 to be used for this.

Again may I say that to all who worked on this project, you deserve the heartiest congratulations.

We hope to visit Milton-Freewater again in the near future.

Yours truly,

Alpha Dixon Kersavage

Dear Mrs. Kersavage,

Mr. Caverhill gave me your letter to answer, and yesterday morning I ran out and visited your mother for a few minutes.

We are going to be glad to go ahead with the steps for you, but they should be on two separate steps as follows:

John L. and Elizabeth Dickson 1907

William H. and Ida A. Dixon 1907

Up to now we have limited the original 76 steps to the years before 1890, and the next 23 are the years prior to 1900. Beginning with yours however, we are going to accept them up to 1910. Your two will give us 25 of the last 80 and by broadening it to 1910 we probably will get them all sold within a reasonable time.

Each step is $35 so I am returning you $50 check and you can send us the $70. Merrill Blades has about 10 on and is trying to get the others on by August 26th which will be the date of the dedication. If at all possible you may wish to be here at that time.

The community response on this project has been remarkable.

Yours Sincerely,

Russel Blackler

I very much appreciate your letter in regard to the steps in the Park.

I also appreciate hearing about the date for the dedication and if at all possible, I plan to attend.
