In Reply to: Samuel Cockburn 1820 Scotland to Missouri by Michael Middleton of 307

I do not have any knowledge of Samuel Cockburn but you mention Thomas F. Cockburn who was my g grandfather's step father, He was born in Scotland in 1820. according to the 1900 US Census: Missouri, Morgan, Haw Creek p.7A ED 73 He Imigrated to the USA in 1857 and was a naturalized citizen, His 1st wife was Margaret A. Train married on 19 Nov 1859, , Benton, Missouri ( Benton County Marriage Records LDS Family History Library Film #946162) married by W. H. Parks M. G.. According to the 1860 Census Margaret was age 48 , born in Pen.. Thomas next appears in the Civil War Service records serving in co. E 7th Missouri S. M. Cav, Private then Sargent befor being assigne to th 45th MO Inf as a Lieutenant, discharged in 1865, According to the 1870 Census, he would have been born about 1812 in Scotland and had a new wife named Lavina age 63 also born in Pennsylvania and son Henry John age 18, born in Illinois,. I have not found a marriage record here. Thomas married Mary Ann Crenshaw 29 May 1879 LDS Family History libray Film # 946193 p. 163, I am not convinced that this Mary Ann Crenshaw Is the only Mary Ann Abner was married to. My grand father said her maiden name was Christain and she was also known as Christian Crenshaw. Mary Ann Linch his first wife was born in Illinois, ( 1860 Census) while the 1880 Census had Mary Cockburn born in Indiana. My grand father never metioned having a grandpa Cockburn nor did he record ever having an uncle John, born 1875. He did say that Abner died about 1873, so I assme the third son on the 1880 Census belonged to Thomas and Lavina Cockburn.

There is another interesting possibility given the fact that on Mar 24 1882 Thomas F.Cockburn and wife and Andrew Christian et al and Joseph Christian and wife made a joint sale of land to James P Butcher. Morgan County Deed Recordc film # 981053. Could these be Mary Ann's brothers

I found Thomas on th 1890 veteran Schedual Missouri, Morgan, Piedmont, as having served as Sergeant E co M S M enlisted m 1862 discharged A 1863 Leng't of service 2 years 6 mo and As L. F Co. 45 Mis Vol. 6 Mos.

The last record I have of Thomas F Cockburn is his attendace at the Walla Walla encampment in Washington State in 1906. I am assuming he was visit His brother Andrew C Cockburn who lived in near by Milton-Freewater, they served together in the 45 Missouri Inf.

let me know what you have found on Samuel Cockburn and any comments or correction you have for on my research. Thanks

Subject: Pioneer genealogy Thomas Cockburn

Director Frazier Farmstead Museum:

I am impressed by the genealogical research Sarah Olsen and Linda Kracke have done on the pioneers of Walla Walla Valley. I commend them fore their contribution. I have a few comments and corrections to make on entries concerning my family line. Thomas Cockburn was my great great grand mothers 2nd husband. Her maiden name was Mary Ann Christian. Your researcher has it as Mary Ann Abner. Abner was her 1st husbands given name (Abner Crenshaw) see 1860 US Census: Missouri, Benton, Town 41 Range 21(Series M653 Roll 607 Page 388 line 6 & 7. Also under Notes for Mary Ann Abner in the 1870 Census MO Benton, Union Pg 290, the Mary Crenshaw cited is Mary Ann Christian's sister-in-law Mary Malcom, married to Abner's brother David Crenshaw. David and Mary were in Benton County Town 41 range 20 in the 1860 Census; Series M653 roll 607 page 384. I have not found Abner and Mary in the 1870 Census. One last comment, Andrew and Thomas Cockburn may well be the sons of John Cockburn and Margaret (Scott) in Morebattle, Roxburghshire, Scotland as connected by your researchers but only if the immigration year recorded for Andrew on the 1900 Census of 1847 is incorrect or he went back to Scotland for a visit in 1851, because he was there in the 1851 Census.

Your web page is very impressive, Thank You

ANDREW C. COCKBURN FAMILY

Author Unknown

Provided for ‘Early History of the Milton-Freewater Area’

Published by the Valley Herald – 1962

This story was not used

Although comparatively latecomers to a valley that was settled in the early 1850’s, Andrew and Rebecca Cockburn can be counted among those pioneers, whom with their family settled here and contributed to its growth and development. There are at present thirty-five direct descendants living between Pendleton and Waitsburg, twenty-six of these in the Milton-Freewater area.

Andrew was born in Scotland in 1829. Sometime later the family moved to the United States and settled in Benton County, Missouri. In 1860 he married Rebecca J. Hunter. She was born in 1842 in Hannock County, Illinois, but moved to Missouri in 1850.

In 1888 the Cockburn family came to this valley and settled on a wheat ranch in the Dry Creek area. They also farmed on the Indian Reservation land in those early days.

Andrew died at his ranch home in 1907, at the age of 78. Rebecca died at 74 in 1916, at her home in South Milton, where she had moved after the death of her husband. Her old home, next to Rambo’s Welding Shop, was destroyed by fire about two years ago.

The couple was survived by four sons; Charles H.M. (Mack), Frank, George S. (Doc), and one daughter Mary, who was married to William Harder at that time.

By the late 1890’s and early 1900’s all the Cockburn’s were engaged in wheat farming. Mack’s home farm was in the Couse Creek area. Charlie, Frank and Doc and the Harder’s settled around Spofford and the lower Walla Walla River side hills. In the mid 1920’s Frank leased out his land and moved his family to Bothell, Washington. About this time Mary also moved to Seattle, where she later remarried. Charlie too, leased out his land and went into the Ice and Cold Storage business in Milton. Mack and Doc remained wheat ranchers throughout their lifetime. Mac did move to Milton after turning over the home place to his oldest daughter, Ollie and her husband, Roy Howard, but continued his farming interest. Doc was living on his ranch and farming at the time of his death.

Most of the land acquired by those early farmers has remained in the family.

Eber and Bob Howard, Mack’s grandsons, farm the Cause Creek land. Bill Harder, Mary’s son, farmed their land until ill health forced him to lease it out this past year. Jon Cockburn, Doc’s youngest son, lives on and farms the home place east of Milton.

Charlie’s Milton Ice and Cold Storage business is also still in the family under the management of Lawrence Lutcher, his stepson. Charlie had no children of his own but raised two step-children.

Mack had six children; Frank had two; and Doc had seven.

CHARLES T. COCBURN PASSES MONDAY MORNING

The auditorium of the Christian church was packed Wednesday afternoon with relatives and friends of Charles T. Cockburn, gathered to pay their last tributes of love and respect to one who had lived among them for fifty years.

Mr. Cockburn passed away at noon Monday at his home in Milton after an illness of several weeks. He was born in Benton County, Missouri, January 10, 1864, and came to Milton in 1890, engaging in farming near town. For the past 25 years he had been associated with Milton Ice and Cold Storage company and as a business- man achieved the same success as he had at farming. He was known and liked by nearly everyone for his courteous and kindly way of living.

Surviving relatives include his widow, Viola Maye; two stepchildren, Mrs. Francis Greulich of La Grande and Lawrence Lutcher of Helena, Montana; three brothers, H.M. Cockburn and G.S. Cockburn of Milton and F.E. Cockburn of Seattle; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Berger of Seattle.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Christian church by Rev. W.H. Bleakney of Walla Walla, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Interment was in Mountain View cemetery at Walla Walla.
