SAMUEL VANCIL AND MALINDA SCOTT

Samuel Vancil and Malinda Scott were married in Walla Walla, Washington on January 27, 1868. They made their first home on what is known now as the Will Steen Ranch on Dry Creek. A short time later they moved to the John Hardin place near Pepper Crossing. Their first son, William, was born on May 8, 1869.

In the spring of 1870 they moved to Couse Creek onto the place known by many today as the George McConnell place. Their second son, Robert, was born there September 9, 1870. In March of 1871 they moved a half mile farther up the creek where their two daughters were born; Anna on August 21, 1874, and Lily on June 21, 1877. They lived there until 1910 when Samuel Vancil passed away.

The following are "Memoirs" by Anna Vancil Carney.

Some of the first families I remember were Mr. And Mrs. Lindsay, Jessie, Lily, and Thomas Johnson a step-son of Mr. Lindsay. Mr. And Mrs. Jenkins, Anna, Laura, and Tony; Mr. And Mrs. James Shumway, Olive, Ada, Amy, Alva and Arthur; Mr. And Mrs. William Winn, Douglas, Frank, Ambrose, Charles, Alice and Ella; Mr. And Mrs. Henry Reed, Frank, Janie, Della, Olen, Effie and Myrtle; Mr. And Mrs. D.W. Harris, Laura, Harvey, Jennie and Bertha; Mr. And Mrs. Jesse Milton, Etta, Viola, and Frank; Mr. And Mrs. James Kutch, Amanda, Wilson, Mary, Jimmie, and Anna; Mr. And Mrs. Sams, Nathan, Mary, Charles, James, Henry and Emma; Mr. And Mrs. Jacob Sams, Thomas, Cicero, Marion and Alonzo. After the death of Jacob Sams, Mrs. Sams married Nathan Sams and the following children were born to them; Isabel, Irene, Fred, Jasper, May and Etta; Mr. And Mrs. Knowlton, Rhoda and Susie.

Samuel Vancil, James Shumway, William Winn and ,I think, D.W. Harris, built the first school house in the Couse Creek neighborhood. Mr. Knowlton was the first teacher. My first teacher was a Miss Ballou, but as I was only four years old I don't remember her first name, though I think it was Myra. Other teachers were Mrs. Winskill, Ella Willis, Delia Miller, Mary Lane, Mrs. Evans, Clara Crow, Smith Armstrong, W.P. Palmer, Charley March, Mrs. Williams, J.H. Barton, E.A. Freed, Wesley Harrah, Jesse Martin, Edgar George, Mr. Henderson, A.R. Shumway, and Viola Davis.

I think the Indians must have named Couse Creek for on the hill in front of our place a plant called Couse grew. The roots were round and brown and when peeled were white. The Indians came every spring and dug the plant for food. Many times they were scattered over the hill digging Couse. They also picked what they called "Moldies", but we called them Choke Cherries.

There were always a large number of Indians camped up the creek a few miles above us. Their Chief was called "Homily". He came to our home and bought things from my father. He was always honest in his dealings and made his tribe do as he said or they were punished. One day, while my father was in town and Mother was alone with the two little boys, two Bucks came and asked for milk. Mother told them she didnÙut have any sweet milk, but she could give them some sour milk. One of them said, "You Lie". An old sailor was cutting wood near the house and he came and wanted to shoot the one who had called Mother a liar, but she said , "No, it would only make trouble for everyone.ÙT Later, Father told Chief Homily about it and he said, ÙSMe fix him." A few weeks later they left the creek on their way to the reservation. As they passed our house Homily called the folks to come out. He had the young Buck tied to a horse and an Indian on each side of him. Homily said, "Me teach him to call white woman a liar; me fix him." What he did to him we never knew, but he was not seen on the creek again.

I was a little past four years old when news came of the Indians being on the war path,, and though I suppose I remember my folks tell about it, I do distinctly recall Father bringing all of us to my Aunt Margaret Sheets house in Milton. We stayed there two or three days and when Father came back to town Mother insisted on going back home with him. A Mr. And Mrs. Bill Fletcher and their family went home with us. That evening Mother and Mrs. Fletcher were fixing beds for us; there were four Fletcher children and twelve of us altogether, and as was mostly the case in those days, when there was company we children slept on the floor. While the beds were being made bedlam seemed to have broken loose at the place above ours.

Dogs were barking; people were yelling; and of course, the first thought was of Indians. Father and Mr. Fletcher got their guns and as they left told the women if they heard shooting to take the children and hide in the bushes that grew along the creek. By the time the men got near their neighbors place the noise had quieted down so they waited awhile and came home. They later learned that the neighbor calves had gotten in with the cows at milking time and getting them separated before the calves got the milk had caused all the noise and confusion. This probably seems a trifling affair to raise such a fuss about, but in those days, when butter was one of the main products to sell for necessities, it was no small matter to lose the milk from a dozen or more cows. Although the Indians were on the War Path they never came to our place while they were fighting.

Old Homily came often. Once he came with two Bucks and Father insisted they stay and eat with us. Homily though his Bucks ate more that they should and said, "Shame; eat more than two white men".

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM NEWTON2 VANCIL (SAMUEL WASHINGTON1) was born 08 May 1869 in Milton, Umatilla, OR, and died 19 Dec 1943 in Prairie City, Grant, Oregon7. He married ROSA ALICE GIBSON 09 Jul 1896 in Milton, Umatilla, OR, daughter of HORATIO GIBSON and CHARLOTTE HUBLER. She was born 29 Jul 1880 in Chanute, Neoshe, Kansas, and died 26 Nov 1954 in Canyon City,, Oregon8.

Notes for WILLIAM NEWTON VANCIL:

http://gesswhoto.com/vancil.html

William Newton Vancil was born in Milton Freewater to parents Samuel and Malinda Vancil on May 08, 1869. He learned the trade of blacksmith on his father's ranch and met Rosa Gibson at the age of 26. Rosa was the eldest daughter of Charlotte and Horatio Gibson. She was born July 29, 1880, in Chanute or Ealton, Kansas.

Will and Rosa were married July 09, 1896. They lived in Milton Freewater and began their family. Having 13 children in all kept Rosa quite busy. First came Dan, born May 01, 1897; then Florence, Feb. 02, 1899; Ray, Jan. 02, 1901; Vernie, Aug. 27, 1902; Alvie, July 22, 1904; Della, Sept. 20, 1906; Delia, Feb. 04, 1908; Hazel, Aug. 20, 1910; and the 10th child to be born was Dallas on July 29, 1915. Misery came twice to William and Rosa when Della died at only 6 weeks old and Vernie was taken by fever at the age of 10.

With the growing of more family, Will made the decision to homestead a piece of land in Bear Valley near Seneca. There he could build his blacksmith shop and run a ranch as well. So in June of 1915, the family packed up and made the move.

At the shop in Bear Valley, Will made wagons and repaired wagons as well as building sleds and coffins. There is a small cemetery where 7 people lay, only one name is remembered, Joe Exworthy. He died of pneumonia one winter after Will and Rosa moved to the area. Rosa and her mother helped take care of him in his illness. His home is just over the knoll from theirs.

After getting settled in their new home, Rosa gave birth to three more boys, Melvin on Jan. 11, 1917, Virgil, Sept. 23, 1919, and Cecil, Nov. 12, 1921. The kids still at home attended school in Bear Valley which served Seneca and Camp 1.

The Vancils decided to pick up one more time and move to Canyon City just in time for Cecil to start the first grade, 1927. Will bought a blacksmith shop located behind the old school on Rebel Hill. The home they bought was the old Estes place, 4 miles up Canyon Creek. The kids remember playing in the pond out front.

Will, continually outgrowing his blacksmith shop, sold and bought another. The next one was located across from the Methodist Church (now being renovated). And then, one last time, he changed locations to John Day where now stands S-M Motor Co. He sold the location to Buck Smith who originally opened the car dealership.

Will and Rose retired as Will was getting too old. He stayed active with his gardening he loved to do. He passed away on Dec. 19, 1943. Rosa stayed in Canyon City, where most of her family still lived, being surrounded by grandchildren and great-grandchildren and remembering the death of another of her boys, Dallas, in WWII. She died Nov. 26, 1954. Both she and Will are buried in the Canyon City Cemetery.

Rosa is remembered by her family as a very caring woman. - Shirleen Vancil Bailey

William Virgil Vancil

The eighth son, and twelfth child, of William Newton and Rosa Vancil was born Sept. 23, 1919, named William Virgil.

Virgil and his brothers would hunt and fish for fun in the whole JohnDay area. They would bring in meat for the family and have a good time doing it.

Virgil worked mainly in logging, as did most of the Vancil boys, moving from Canyon City to Sheridan and spending time in various other areas throughout Oregon.

His wife, Betty Powell, bore him many children. Two of them live in Klamath Falls such as Betty Mae and Bill, the oldest and youngest of Virgil's family.

Betty was killed tragically in an auto accident in Lakeview at a young age. Virgil was also killed by an accident. Both are now buried in Lakeview.

==============================================

OBIT - Robert Vancil Passes Sunday

September 3, 1939

Robert Franklin Vancil, son of one of the earliest pioneer families of the Milton district and himself a lifelong resident of this community, passed away at his home in Milton Sunday after an extended illness, being but six days short of 69 years of age.

Robert F. Vancil was born at the family homestead on Couse creek September 9, 1870. He was educated in the public schools and at Columbia College and on June 29, 1904 was married to Miss Rena Troyer of Milton. After making his home in town he was active in civic affairs. Having served Milton both as city marshal and as councilman, resigning from the last position in October, 937, because of failing health.

He also served Freewater as city recorder for some time. Although living in town, he retained his agricultural interests and at the time of his death owned ranch property near Milton and near Touchet, Wash., and timberland in the mountains.

Mr. Vancil had been actively affiliated with the Knights of Pythias lodge for many years and had served the lodge in every capacity available. He was a member of the Methodist church and was regarded as a sincere Christian and upright man.

Surviving relatives include his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Helen Harris of Ceres, Calif., and Miss Marie Vancil, at home; two sons, Ivan Vancil of Elberton, Wash., and Marvin Vancil of Weston; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Carney and Mrs. Lillie Huntley, both of Milton and a brother, William Vancil of Canyon City.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist church with the pastor, Rev. Orval M. Whitman, in charge, assisted by Rev. W.C. Howard. Internment was made in the Milton Odd Fellows cemetery.

. . .

The daughter of Usal Wesley and Anna Genetta Carney, she was one of six children reared on a farm near Couse Creek.

Miss Carney was graduated from Columbia Junior College and received her BA at Willamette University in Salem. She also attended Northwestern School of Commerce in Portland where she completed a teacher-training course.

Although the past 25 years have been spent at Umapine, her teaching career began in Cottonwood, Ore., where she remained for two years. This was the only time she taught elementary grades.

Baker City Herald

Pauline Dyksterhuis

Pauline Mary Dyksterhuis, 79, a longtime resident of Baker City, died July 15, 2003, at Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande.

A celebration of life service in honor of Pauline will be held at the Community Connection of Baker County, 2810? Cedar St., on Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. Dinner and a little dancing to country tunes will follow.

Pauline was born on May 6, 1924, at Mount Vernon to Joseph and Mary Silvers. A brother and sister were born several years later. She attended a country school called the Belshaw School between Mount Vernon and John Day. She graduated from Grant Union High School in John Day in 1942.

After graduation, Pauline worked at Wayside Market as a bookkeeper, and in September 1945 married Floyd Schouten and moved to his ranch in Seneca. She lived there until Floyd's death a couple years later. After moving back to John Day she began a 19-year career as a telephone operator at the local telephone company.

In 1949 Pauline married Eugene Roberts. They divorced 17 years later. She worked for three years for the city of John Day and several years for Dr. King as a receptionist.

Pauline later married Eugene Dyksterhuis; his job as a soil conservationist transferred them to Baker City in 1971. She went to work for Ellingson Lumber where she worked until her retirement in 1978. Her husband, Gene, died in 1981.

Pauline loved Baker County and enjoyed all it had to offer. She made many friends and spent years as a volunteer at the Oregon Trail Regional Museum, Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, the Senior Center and at St. Elizabeth Health Services where she also acted as treasurer for the hospital auxiliary. She was the president of Business and Professional Women for a couple of years in the late 70s and was an active member for many years.

Pauline loved the outdoors and liked to camp and fish. She loved children and liked to spend time with her great-nieces and great-nephew. She thrived on studying and traveling local areas with special friends and family. She also traveled to Portugal and the Azores Islands several years ago. Her parents immigrated to Grant County from the Azores.

She is survived by her sister, Ernestine Hill of John Day; brother Anthony Silvers of Baker City; nieces, Colleen Hill Hogan of Portland and Celeste Hill-Thomas of the Dalles; a nephew, Mike Hill from Baker City; two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon State University Foundation, St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary or Community Connection of Baker County in care of Gray's Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

The fifth child born to William and Rosa Vancil was Alvie, born July 22, 1904, in Milton Freewater.

Alvie grew up in Bear Valley with the rest of his brothers and sisters, thirteen in all.

Alvie married Pauline Hoare June 08, 1929. They had 3 children Helen, Alva Lee and Hazel Mae. They lived on the homestead in Bear Valley after Will and Rosa moved the rest of their family to Canyon City. He did ranching and worked with some of his brothers catching wild horses and selling them.

Alvie, Pauline and the kids pulled up stakes and moved to McCall, Idaho. Nothing else is known by this author, of the life of Alvie Vancil.

Notes for WESLEY SAMUEL VANCIL:

http://gesswhoto.com/vancil.html

Samuel Wesley Vancil (Buck)

Buck was the last of the Vancil kids to be born in Milton Freewater Dec. 01, 1912. His parents were William and Rosa who moved to Bear Valley soon.

Buck spent his early years working as a ranch hand on his dad's ranch as well as around the area. He also began a family venture of catching wild horses and selling them to buyers from all around. People even came from Portland. There were a lot of wild horses running in the Balo Mountain area of Bear Valley.

When Buck was breaking the horses one day in the winter, a horse fell with him and broke his leg. It never healed exactly right, so for the rest of his life he had a limp.

When he married Margaret Buchanan Dec. 17, 1944, he changed his job to logging. Margaret had 7 children from a previous marriage and she and Buck had two of their own - Samuel Wesley Jr. (Bucky) and David Newton. They moved back and forth between Seneca and John Day for several years till they moved to Grants Pass. Logging kept the family going till all the kids were up and gone. Buck and Margaret then moved to Bly, where he worked for Loveness Logging Co. They lived there for nearly 10 years then he retired to a watchman's job at a Spray, Oregon ranch.

Failing health drove them back to Seneca where Margaret's daughter lives. Buck was admitted to a San Jose Hospital in April of '79 where he died of a brain tumor May 1. They brought him home to be buried in Canyon City. Margaret is still in Seneca.

Dallas Franklin Vancil

Dallas was the first of Will and Rosa Vancil's thirteen children to be born out of Milton Freewater. Dallas was born July 29, 1915 in Athena, Oregon.

Dallas was killed on Leyte Island in the Phillipines during a battle in WW II. He was rather the loner of the family and not much is known of his short 27 year life. He married Vetta Mae Kimbol Oct. 22, 1932 and after having four children, Virgil Lewis, Billie Dewayne, Viola Verdene and Earl Evan, they were divorced. Dallas remarried and had one more son, Daryl Lynn.

Dallas was on furlough when Daryl was born in Feb. 1944 seeing his family for what would be the last time.

The Government sent him out on orders. The family at home was kept in the dark as to his location. One year after seeing his family, his mother Rosa received a letter from the Army stating Dallas was killed Jan. 14, 1945 in combat. He now lies in a Portland Veterans cemetery.

Henry Melvin Vancil

Henry Melvin Vancil, born Jan. 11, 1917, in Seneca, Oregon was the eleventh child of Will and Rosa Vancil.

Melvin was in the las senior class to go to the old school on Rebel Hill in Canyon City, before the High School moved to the new place.

Melvin spent his growing up years in the Seneca area where the family was homesteading a ranch. A lot of his time was spent helping out and as he got older, he and his brother Buck, along with some Stratton boys, would catch herds of wild horses to sell to buyers.

As the logging business grew in Seneca and John Day, more and more young people took up logging as a profession. Melvin was no different. He began with driving trucks between John Day and Seneca.

He met Leona Moore who lived in Mt. Vernon and married her April 14, 1941. They had two children - Ken and Alice. Alice lives in Canyon City with her family.

Melvin and Leona lived in Mt. Vernon till he was hut in a logging accident that left him severely crippled for a time. He was then sent to accounting school so as he could learn a new trade. After years of healing, Melvin lives in Lebanon with Leona after retiring from working at the US Plywood office, for many years.

14. CECIL O3 VANCIL (WILLIAM NEWTON2, SAMUEL WASHINGTON1) was born 12 Nov 1921 in John Day, Oregon, and died 14 Oct 1991 in Klamath,OR69,70. He married JULIA A JOHNSON 22 Aug 1942 in Washington,ID71.

Notes for CECIL O VANCIL:

http://gesswhoto.com/vancil.html

Cecil Oscar Vancil

My father is the youngest child of Will and Rosa Vancil born Nov. 12, 1921 in John Day, Oregon. His parents lived in a Bear Valley homestead ranch until he was six years old. They all moved into Canyon City where Will had a blacksmith shop. They lived in the old Estes place which they bought 4 miles out of town, on Canyon Creek.

Cecil started school in 1927 when the school was located on Rebel Hill. When he was 7 years old, he came down with scarlet fever and was quarantined with only his mother watching him. He almost died of the illness, but lived on to get into more mischief. Once, about the age of 10, he and brother Virgil and some other friends were crawling under the old Grant County Courthouse and found some homemade whiskey that was not there before, so, of course, kids have to try it. One of his friends with him got pickled enough he fell off a wagon and went running to his father. Next thing they knew there was the sheriff taking their treasure.

Graduating in 1939, Cecil turned down a baseball scholarship to marry mother, Judy Johnson at the age of 19. He and Judy were married Aug. 22, 1942. Cecil worked for the State Highway Dept. for awhile, living in John Day. There was a move in 1948 to Calif. So they packed up daughter Judith Dawn born Dec. 08, 1943, and all their belongings; but they didn't stay long. A few years later they ended up in Grants Pass where they had three more children - Shirleen, born July 19, 1956; Carolyn, born April 28, 1957; and Teresa, born Oct. 08, 1959.

The logging business was beginning to fade for Cecil so he got into carpentry. Grants Pass was growing for awhile but they slacked off. The family made one last move - to Chiloquin, Oregon.

Cecil stayed in carpentry for many years. Judy was kept busy taking care of the house and kids. Judith married a rancher's son, Ken Knight, from Fort Klamath. They now have 3 teenage children.

Thirteen years separated Judy and I, so Cecil and Judy had an extra long time raising kids. My sisters Carolyn and Teresa are married and live in Klamath Falls, as am I.

Cecil and Judy are now retired and travel in their home on wheels from warm spot to warm spot.
