RASMUSSEN TWINS OF MILTON TO CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY

Ca. 1944

Milton's picturesque Rasmussen twins-Hans and Christian-are drawing near their eightieth birthday anniversary. August 22nd is the date, and the occasion warrants a genuine "blowout".

The story behind these two Danes begins with a touch of pathos. On the day they were born their father returned to his village smithy and modest home near Nakskov, Denmark, from the bloody and ruthless war with Prussia, in which the avaricious Prussians took unto themselves from Denmark by might without right the highly developed provinces of Schleswig and Holstein.

By 1880 Father Rasmussen was determined to emigrate to America, and took with him the twins, three other sons and a daughter. The family settled in Iowa but by 1902 Hans had married in the Dakotas and reached Milton. He developed five acres of land on the Walla Walla, but ere long Old Man River started gnawing at that ground and Hans had to move. His house was salvaged and moved to its present location on First Street, were he acquired three large lots which he made a permanent home.

The twins and a sister living at Mabton are the only survivors of the original family.

About a year ago Mrs. Hans Rasmussen passed on, and now the two daughters are home to maintain the feminine touch. Miss Sophie was home ec. teacher at Hanford, CA, a number of years, but in the past two years was associated with the farm security administration in Arizona and California.

Miss Charlotte is a onetime Mac-Hi faculty member, but for some 9 or 10 years has been headquartered in Los Angeles where she has been engaged in Christian education work among the Jews, the objective of which is to create better understanding and appreciation between the two racial groups.

Christian, oldest of the twins by a matter of minutes, never married. He put in a large number of years as porter in a Fort Dodge hotel. When the Klondike gold rush enticed many a man into the far north, Christian was among them.

Some 9 or 10 years ago he came to Milton to make his home with his brother. During that time he acquired a love for high school sports and no Mac-Hi audience at games and meets has been complete most of these years unless Christian was present.

When it comes to Milton-Freewater area history, Effie Ritchey has seen it all-but about two years worth.

Ritchey, 93, was born Effie Torgerson near Mitchell, SD on October 26, 1898. She moved with her family to Milton in 1900. It was in this area that she grew up and attended school.

She graduated from high school at what was then Central School, before McLoughlin Union High School was established.

She married Frank Ritchey in 1921 and they lived in Portland for about a year before moving back to Milton to the farm where she still lives. Frank and Effie had two daughters, Roberta Davis and Marie McQueeney. Frank is now deceased. Effie also has two grandchildren, two sisters (Stella Baker and Ida Kenoyer) and two brothers (Oscar and Wilbur Torgerson).

Arrangements are through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR.

WW Valley icon Effie Ritchey dies at 107

By Sheila Hagar of the Union-Bulletin

A Walla Walla Valley icon died Tuesday in Milwaukie, Ore., at the age of 107.

Effie Ritchey, formerly of Milton-Freewater, had moved to the west side of the state in 2004 from her beloved hometown to be close to her only surviving child, daughter Marie McQueeney, also of Milwaukie.

At the time, Ritchey espoused an upbeat attitude about the move, despite leaving the town she'd lived in since 1900.

At age 2, Ritchey and her parents left the droughts and insect invasions of South Dakota to what was then Milton, Ore. Effie Theresa Torgerson attended local schools, then business school in Portland. After graduation, she worked there for Union Pacific and Great Northern railroads as a recording clerk.

In Portland, she met and married Frank Bernard Ritchey in 1920, bringing her new husband back to live in Milton in 1921. They bought a farm outside of Freewater and grew raspberries, tomatoes and fruit, and later operated a wholesale produce business.

Frank Ritchey died in 1972.

The couple's first child, Frank, Jr., died when he fell into a hole dug for a new telephone pole, hanging to death as his scarf caught on some barbed wire, McQueeney said. ``I don't think anyone knows about that. I'm not sure I would have if my aunt hadn't told me.''

Effie Ritchey's church involvement became legendary in the community. According to past Union-Bulletin stories, she was a tireless toiler devoted to supporting youth and mission work, as well as teaching Sunday school and functioning as the church wedding planner.

People married under her watch can attest to her attention to detail, said the Rev. Duane Geyer of First Christian Church of Milton-Freewater. ``She was known to measure the distance of the tablecloths from hem to floor,'' he said this morning. ``Everything was in order, there were no missteps.''

Ritchey joined the Milton-Freewater church when she was 9 years old, Geyer said. He became her pastor in 2000, and enjoyed meeting with her on a regular basis before she moved away. ``She was an amazing lady, a delightful person to be around.''

Her favorite conference room was a local restaurant, where dinner out became not an appointment but an event, he said. Ritchey made sure to sit where she could keep an eye on who was coming and going, Geyer remembered. ``She's the only woman in my congregation besides my wife that I took out to dinner.''

Her mother's fondness for gracious living defined her, McQueeney said by phone this morning. ``She loved elegance. If I described her in one word, it would be `elegant.'''

Ritchey's organizational skills and hospitality helped many, her daughter said. Their Milton-Freewater home was open to girls who wanted to finish high school but had nowhere to live. ``It gave us additional sisters at times.''

Her mother also seemed to be a tower of strength and acceptance during her lifetime. When Ritchey's other daughter, Roberta Davis, died in 1996 from a blood clot soon after successful knee surgery, her mother absorbed the blow and kept going, McQueeney said. The same was true when grandson Scott McQueeney died in 2003, right after crossing the finish line of a 50-kilometer run.

Her eagerness to embrace life allowed Ritchey to begin traveling internationally in her early 90s, McQueeney feels. The only accommodation Ritchey allowed was wheelchair transport in the airports, she remembered with a laugh.

Ritchey's life after leaving Milton-Freewater was still filled with graceful living in the adult care home she moved to, McQueeney said.

Geyer agreed. ``It was her element. Effie liked fine things, she was a lady of dignity, and this home was like that.''

Although in a wheel chair, she remained an active participant in family life until this past year, when she began sleeping much of the time. McQueeney said. Ritchey had earlier this year fought her way back from a life-threatening infection, and ``her heart and lungs were in great shape. I thought sure we'd see her 108th (birthday).''

A fall June 30 caused Ritchey's hip to break, leaving her mother in terrible pain, McQueeney said. Together, she and the Milwaukie hospice agency decided not to hospitalize Ritchey.

She knows her mother felt God was in ultimate charge of her life, McQueeney said. Yet Ritchey didn't feel all her work on earth was done - she was still looking ahead, the daughter said. ``She certainly hadn't reconciled herself that there was a finite end.''

Ritchey is also survived by granddaughter Nancy Schuff of Milwaukie and Steve McQueeney of Portland.

A memorial service is set for July 15 at the First Christian Church at 518 S. Main St. in Milton-Freewater; the time will be finalized at a later date.

Obituary

Composite of PEYTON WINN from

Walla Walla Union Bulletin dated Tuesday, June 5, 2001

Milton-Freewater Valley Times dated Friday June 8, 2001

Former Milton-Freewater resident Peyton R. Winn, 79, of Park Plaza Retirement Residence, died May 31, 2001, at Regency at the Park in College Place.

The funeral service will be 11:a.m. Friday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater. A concluding service and burial will be in Olney Cemetery, Pendleton. Pastor John Stafford of College Place Seventh-day Adventist Village Church and the Rev. David Brauer-Rieke of Christ The King Lutheran Church will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation through the funeral home.

Mr. Winn was born May 28, 1922, at St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla, to George W. and Anna Compton Winn. Raised on the farm near Weston, he graduated from McLoughlin Union High School. He attended a year at Oregon State College, belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and was assistant editor of the OSC newspaper.

During World War II he enlisted in the United States Army, undergoing basic training at Camp Roberts in California and served in the Dutch West Indies as a radio operator on the island of Curacao.

He married Jessie Kenoyer July 6, 1943. He and his wife had five children during their 24-year marriage. After receiving his honoable discharge, the couple returned to his family farm to go into farming with his father and his brother Bob. He was always very interested in modern farming methods, and conservation and crop diversification. This thinking was instrumental in the beginning of raising strawberries, a crop for which the farm later became well-known.

He was among the first to employ Japanese Americans returning to the area from internment camps, utilizing their skills at the beginning of the strawberry project.

In 1956, Winn began working for the Federal Government to provide Federal Crop Insurance to area farmers. He was District Supervisor until 1967. Later jobs included serving as custodian at Central School as well as working part-time at Sears after his retirement.

He married Adealia L. Tollefson May 1, 1969. She passed away April 16, 1994.

Winn was involved in many community activities. He was a Post Commander of the Weston VFW chapter, president of the Weston Chamber of Commerce, served on the steering Committee of the Umatilla County Pioneer Reunion and was a member of the Farm Bureau. He was a life long Democrat.

Both musical and church activities were important to him. He had been given vocal training as a youth by his mother and never forgot what she had taught him. He sang in several choirs over the years, and enjoyed singing in a barbershop quartet, which for a while was featured music for a weekly radio program on KWWB. He was a popular soloist in the area and even in his final years sang at weddings, funerals and made weekly rounds singing at retirement centers the old songs he knew so well. He passed his love for music down to his children, teaching them to sing in harmony from an early age. When it came to church participation he had experience in several denominational traditions. Raised a Methodist, he later attended the First Baptist Church of Athena, while raising his family.

After moving to Milton-Freewater, he became a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church where he served as Treasurer for many years. In the last two months of his life he became a member of the College Place Seventh-day Adventist Village Church. He was an avid Bible student throughout his life, and also passed this on to his children

In the later years, he taught "55 Alive" classes and enjoyed breakfasting with "The Over the Hill Gang". He was pleased to be a recipient of the Golden Pioneer Award as well. A crowning achievement of his last year of life was the organizing of the first Winn Family reunion in June of 2000. Winn descendents came to M-F from far and near to learn family history, share old mementos, and meet each other, many for the first time. This was a fulfillment of a long held dream that grew from his years of genealogical work.

Survivors include his four daughters; Karen Pierpoint and Robin Green of Moreno Valley, CA, Christine Cowgill of Honolulu, Hawaii and Barbara Klett of Bend, OR; son Douglas Winn of Seattle, WA; brother Robert Winn of Weston, OR; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren .
