There is one other Italian of note who influenced today's winemakers like Leonetti Cellars' Gary Figgins and Woodward Canyon's Rick Small, and that is Mr. Bert Pesciallo. Mr. Pesciallo said that his dad came here in 1900 from Genoa, Italy.

Bert Pesciallo's Blue Mountain Winery in Milton Freewater, Oregon, was the 14th bonded winery in the state, and the first commercial winery in the Walla Walla area. He is in his 90s and is said to be the oldest living winemaker in the Walla Walla Valley. He said "My dad had vineyards here for years, and used to sell grapes to the Italians in Walla Walla." The Blue Mountain Winery started making and selling wine starting in about 1950, ending shortly after the bad freeze in 1956. "I didn't stop right way because it took the BATF a little while to close me out."

Pesciallo helped Rick Small at Woodward Canyon, and Gary Figgins at Leonetti Cellars get started. Pesciallo now believes that both Small and Figgins have forgotten more than he ever knew about winemaking, because they pursued the wine business and he didn't. "Rick Small bought some of my equipment. He asked me if he could buy some of the equipment that I had purchased from France. So I agreed to sell it to him if I decided to quit. Back then the winery business was very uncertain, now we know it has a good future."

Pesciallo doesn't remember when he became interested in the winery business. He was pretty young and following in his father's footsteps. He said, "Things just happen naturally at that time, when you are a teenager, and you grow up with it. My interest and curiosity grew to the point where I knew I wanted to grow grapes and make wine."

ANN EVANS

Ann Marie Evans, 89, 309 N.E. 8th, Milton-Freewater, died Dec. 26, 2003 at the St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla. Funeral Mass were to be Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Milton-Freewater with Father Bill Kalin officiating. Concluding services and interment were to be in the Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla. Memorial contrubutions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, M-F.

Mrs. Evans was born June 19, 1914 in Milton-Freewater the daughter of G.B. and Elivia Morando Pesciallo. Her sudden and final illness had brought her entire family together again on her favorite day of the year, Christmas. On the following day, she died peacefully. She truly earned and deserved the self-sacrificing title of "Mother". Always by example, she taught the ethics of hard work, self-reliance and determination.

She married Lewis Evans in Yakima, WA in 1929 and the couple made their home in Milton-Freewater. As her children grew in size and number, she helped supplement the family income by working seasonally in the local canneries, and for several years was the champion fruit packer for Stadelman Fruit Company. She finally retired from Lamb-Weston when she was past 70.

She was an excellent seamstress using patterns to make stylish dresses and shirts for the entire family. She planted, cultivated and harvested the fruit and vegetables from an admired garden, consisting of everything from apricots and apples th strawberries, tomatoes, watermelons and zucchini. Those N.E. Eighth Avenue yearly gardens are probably best remembered for the giant sunflowers that bordered her property. In addition, every spring she bought baby chicks and raised most of them for fryers and kept the rest as layering hens. She purchased a jersey cow so the family always had plenty of milk, churned butter, and cheese. She was well known for her homemade apple pie. She freely gave fruits and vegetables to the neightbors and used the rest to make all types of jams and jellies. From her garden, she canned dozens of jars of peaches, apricots, cherries, etc., for the winter months. Due to her efforts, a family with a limited income never went hungry.

Her greatest wish was to live out her life in the home where she had been an inspiring and loved mother. That wish was granted by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Tim Schnell, who for the past five years provided her with the consistent, daily care that was necessary.

She is survived by three sons and their wives, Don and Shelley Evans, of Sacramento, CA; Dr. Leonard "Pug" and Jan Evans, of Hamilton, MT; Ron and Suchada Evans, of Seattle; three daughters and their husbands, Jeannette and Wes Luther of Lake Oswego, Patricia Camp of Walla Walla, Barbara and Tim Schnell of M-F; two brothers Bert and John Pesciallo both of M-F; two sisters Louis Thomaston and Gloria Drake both of Milton-Freewater; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 7, 1988, a son Edward Evans, a daughter Dolores Evans and a sister Delphine Pesciallo.
