Birthday Is Celebrated
The eightieth birthday of Mrs. Catherine Krumbah of Umapine was the occasion for a gala reunion of the family at the W. J. Krumbah Sr., ranch home over the Fourth of July weekend.
Bowls of gladioli combined with sweet peas were used to decorate the large table at which the children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives and friends shared the birthday dinner.
A wristwatch was presented the guest of honor from her children while additional gifts and greeting cards in great numbers were given her.
Children Present
The seven Krumbah children, all of whom were present, included W. J. Krumbah Sr., of Umapine, Marie Martin of Walla Walla, Margaret Heinbigner (Mrs Al) of Walla Walla, Vera Schubert (Mrs. M. C. ) of Seattle; Ilene Hamper (Mrs. W. D.) of Walla Walla, Camille Grimes (Mrs. George) of Umapine and W. F. Krumbah of Colville.
Grandchildren sharing the affair were Des Martin and Mrs. James Bostwick of Pendleton, W. J. Krumbah Jr., of Umapine, Mrs. Thomas P. Everham of Seattle, Mrs. Alvin Bowman of Elgin, Kirby and Craig Krumbah of Colville, and Don Hamper of Walla Walla.
Many Attend
Great grandchildren attending were Gary and Pat Martin, Joanne and Bobbie Bostwick of Pendleton, Harley and Dannie Krumbah of Umapine, Pat and Janice Everham of Seattle and Maxine Kathleen and Darlene Bowman of Elgin.
Phil and Will Murphy of Umapine, brothers of the guest of honor, and a sister, Mrs Mamie Wilson of Seattle, were at the affair as were Mrs. Dale McDaniel and family of Stateline (Mrs McDaniel is a niece of Mrs. Krumbah), Miss Pat Murphy of Juneau, Alaska, and Mrs. Cliff Ward and family of Walla Walla. Miss Murphy and Mrs. Ward are also nieces. Additional guest were M. O. Beauchamp, Mr. and Mrs Marion Cockburn and Howard and Caroline and Don Hastings, all of Walla Walla.

Umapine -- A Krumbah-Schubert family picnic was held Sunday at the Milton City park. Those attending were Bob, Wilbur and Arnold Schubert and family. Mrs. H. Krumbah Taken by Death
Mrs. Harriet Krumbah of 208 South Third died at a local hospital Sunday. She was 72.
Mrs. Krumbah was born November 27, 1878 in Missouri and came west to a farm at Lowden at the age of five. She was a member of the Christian church.
Survivors are daughters, Mrs. Hazel Pfaffle of Wilbur, Wash., Mrs. Ruth Green of Fairbanks, Alaska, Mrs. Irene Foster of San Bernardino, Calif., Mrs. Josephine Hanson of Yakima and Mrs. Pauline Gusler of Walla Walla; sons, Melvin and Lowell Krumbah of Issaquah, Wash., and Charles Krumbah of Vancouver, Wash.; sisters, Mrs. Kattie Hoon of Umapine and Mrs. Roxie Morrison of Sacramento, Calif., and brothers, Fred Weathermon of Lewiston, Cass Weathermon of Umapine, George Weathermon of Milton-Freewater and Charles and Oscar Weathermon of Walla Walla. 21 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren also survive.

Collision Injuries Kill Area Man
William J Krumbah, 74, who farmed at Umapine all his life, died Thursday in a local hospital of injuries suffered in a 1:15 p.m. car accident on Old Milton-Freewater Highway at State Line Road.
Krumbah's wife, Mary, 69, remained hospitalized at Walla Walla General and was termed in satisfactory condition Friday morning.
Oregon State troopers said Krumbah pulled out from the west side of Stateliine Road into the path of a car driven by Glenda Lee Ferguson, 20, Milton-Freewater.
Miss Ferguson's car hit the Krumbah car in the left front, troopers reported. She was southbound on the old Highway 11, officers added.
Crash Damage
Both cars were badly damaged and had to be towed from the scene.
Krumbah, his wife and Miss Ferguson were taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Krumbah died about four hours after the accident, the hospital reported.
Miss Ferguson, who is to marry Stan Williams of Umapine on Oct. 29, was termed in "fine" condition by the hospital. Troopers noted she was still recovering from back injuries sustained in a previous accident.
The Krumbahs celebrated their golden wedding anniversary May 21, 1966.
Lived on Farm
They lived on part of the same farm where they settled when they were married. The farm is in Oregon, but with a Lowden, Wash., address.
Krumbah was born February 18, 1893, in Umatilla County. he married Mary Ann Kelly in Pendleton in 1916.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. James (Rowena) Bostwick of Pendleton; a son, William J. Krumbah Jr. of Pendleton; five sisters: Mrs. Marie Martin, Mrs Ilene Hamper. Mrs Al (Margaret) Heinbigner, all of Walla Walla and Mrs. M.C. (Vera) Schubert of Seattle, and Mrs. George (Camille) Gromes of Umapine.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Krumbah was a member of B.P.O. Elks. No. 287.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Marshall-Herring Funeral home.

Mrs. Mary Krumbah
Mrs. Mary (Lizzie) Krumbah, 72, of Umapine died Friday in a Pendleton hospital following an extended illness.
Born Jan 5, 1898 in Danville, Wash., to Joseph and Nellie Adkins, she was raised in Lowden. On May 27, 1916, she married William J. Krumbah in Pendleton. The couple farmed in the Umapine area throughout their lives. Her husband preceded her in death in October of 1967.
Funeral arrangements have been made for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Marshall-Herring chapel with the Rev George M Knox officating. Concluding services and vault interment will follow in Mt View Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. James (Rowena) Bostwick, Pendleton, a son, William J. Krumbah Jr., Milton-Freewater, and a sister, Mrs. Isabella Gluck, and two brothers, Harlind and James Kelly, all of Walla Walla. Eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and numberous nieces and nephews also survive.

Marquette Conrad Schubert, 72, of Seattle, formerly of Walla Walla, died in Seattle Tuesday.
Born Aug. 1, 1898 in Walla Walla, he was the son of Mr and Mrs Jacob Schubert who homesteaded in the Umapine area in 1901. He attended Washington School in Walla Walla, the Hudson Bay grade school in Oregon and graduated from Umapine High School in 1916. In earlier years he was an active baseball player in the Walla Walla valley, was employed at the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin and the Walla Walla Fire Department.
He married Vera R. Krumbah in 1917 and moved to Seattle in 1930. He worked at the Seattle Post Office for 31 years as a rural carrier until his retirement in 1968. Schubert was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, FOE no 1 of Seattle, the Letter Carriers Association Branch No. 79, and the Letter Carriers Bowling League since 1947.
Surviving Schubert are his wife, Vera, at the home in Seattle; a daughter, MRs. Tom (wilberta) Everhan of Richland, a son, Guy W Schubert of Tacoma, a sister, Mrs. Al (Florence) Cook of Seattle; and three brothers, Arnold, Wilbur and Robert Schubert all of Umapine. Seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the marshall-Herring chapel with Rev Kenneth Countryman of Pioneer United Methodist Church officiating Vault interment will follow in Mt View Cemetery.

George Grimes
MILTON-FREEWATER – George M. Grimes, 84, of Route 2, a life-long resident of the Umapine area, died at his home Monday.
Grimes was born Nov. 3, 1885 in Umapine and married the former Camille Krumbah. He was the school custodian at Umapine 25 years before his retirement in 1952.
Surviving Grimes are his widow, Camille, at the home; two sons, Phillip (Jim) Grimes of Umapine and Burton Grimes of Walla Walla; a daughter, Mrs. Alvin (Beverly) Bowman of Jacksonville, Ore.; a brother, Roy Grimes of Milton-Freewater; and a sister, Mrs. Lulu Guse of Walla Walla. Nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Munselle-Rhodes chapel with Rev. George Knox of the First Christian Church officiating. Vault interment will follow in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

William Duffy of Walla Walla, 67-year-old native of Athena, died in a Walla Walla hospital Monday after a long illness.
Duffy, a member of St. patrick’s Catholic Church, is survived by a son, Mervin Duffy of Pendleton, and a brother, Chick Duffy of Elgin.

Pauline N. Fields, 77, of 141 W. Broadway died Jan. 23, 1996 at the home of daughter and son-in-law.
Graveside services were held Saturday at the Mt. View Cemetery in Walla Walla. A memorial service followed at the Ingle Chapel United Church of Christ with Rev. Kent Gilbert officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Focus on the Family, or the Breadbasket in Milton-Freewater through the Colonial-DeWitt Funeral Home, 19 E. Birch St., Walla Walla, WA 99362.
Mrs. Fields was born Nov. 27, 1918 in Walla Walla to Edward and Harriet Sarah Weathermon Krumbah. She grew up and attended grade school in Lowden. In 1928 she moved with her mother to Gibbon Ore., where her mother owned and operated the only store. They returned to the Walla Walla area a few years later. Mrs. Fields attended Green Park and graduated in 1937 from Walla Walla High School. She was active in 4-H, raising horses and cows. She spent after-school hours and with her cousins to drive the horse teams. She loved to swim and ride her horses.
In 1937 she married Anthony Castoldi. The couple later divorced. In 1959 she married Lloyd Fields.
Mrs. Fields was noted for more that 10,000 volunteer hours of service at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and more than 6,500 hours at Walla Walla General Hospital.
She was devoted to her family and church and was a longtime member of the Pioneer and United Methodist churches before transferring her membership to Ingle Chapel in 1988. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and RSVP.
Mrs. Fields is survived by a daughter, Jean Sherman of Milton-Freewater; three sons, Duane Castoldi of Walla Walla, Jay Fields of Mansfield, Ohio and Zane Fields of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada: 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her eight brothers and sisters.

Memorial service will be 10:30am Tuesday, at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., with the Rev. Ginger Johnston of Grace Presbyterian Church officiating. Concluding services and inurnment will follow at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Mrs. Krumbah was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Umapine to Raymond C. and Jessie Irene Carpenter Records. She graduated from Umapine High School in 1938 and attended Whitman College for 1-1/2 years. On March 29, 1940, she married Des W. Martin of Umapine. They farmed in that area before moving to Pendleton in 1943. She worked for a time at the Oregon Bank in Pendleton.
In 1954, they returned to Milton-Freewater, where they bought Martin's Dairy Queen. They operated the restaurant 21 years, retiring in 1975. They then moved to their cabin at Meacham Lake in Meacham, Ore. When he preceded her in death in 1979, she returned to Pendleton. Ten years later, she married longtime friend William K. Krumbah of
Milton-Freewater on Feb. 14, 1989. She was a member of the Milton-Freewater Lady Elks and an accomplished seamstress, crafter and cook. She enjoyed her grandchildren, bowling, traveling and rodeos. She is survived by her husband at Regency at the
Park; son, Pat Martin of Milton-Freewater; sister Barbara Baldwin of Hubbard, Ore., three brothers; Don Records of Walla Walla, Bob Records of Milton-Freewater and Fred Records of Avondale, Arizona; four stepsons, Harley Krumbah of Pasco, Ed Krumbah of Ellensburg, Wash., Dan Krumbah of Enumclaw, Wash., and Russ Krumbah of Milton-Freewater; stepdaughter, Loy Hahn of Milton-Freewater; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. MEACHAM - Funeral for Des. W. Martin will be 2 p.m. Monday in Milton-Freewater First Christian Church. Interment will be at Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Friends who wish to pay their respects may call Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, Milton-Freewater, until 1 p.m. Monday.
Martin died of a heart attack near his Meacham home Thursday. He was 66.
He was born July 4, 1913 in Umapine to Bernard and Marie Martin. He attended schools there.
He and Jewell J. Records were married March 29, 1940 in Lewiston, Idaho. Martin was a butter-maker from 1941 at Golden West Creamery in Pendleton. He and his wife then bought the Milton-Freewater Dairy Queen and operated it until retirement in 1975, when they moved to Meacham.
Martin was a charter member of BPOE 2146.
He is survived by his wife, at home; sons, Pat, of White Salmon, and Gary, of
La Grande; his mother, Marie Martin, Milton-Freewater; sisters, Bernadine
Geissel, Milton-Freewater, Laverne Jones and Betty Owsley, both of Seattle,
Wash.; brothers, L.P. "Pat", Seattle, and W.B. "Bus" of Walla Walla. There are
four grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater.
