Generation No. 1

1. JOHN J1 HUGHES was born 13 Mar 1818 in New York, and died 19 Jul 1893 in Oregon. He married HANNAH CHRISTINA SMITH. She was born 04 May 1824 in New York, and died 27 Jul 1907 in Oregon.

Notes for JOHN J HUGHES:

JOHN J. HUGHES AND HANNAH C. HUGHES

John J. Hughes with his family came to America from Wales in 1814. They made their home in New York State. John studied medicine from his father. After John married Hannah Smith they left New York for Pennsylvania and then went on to Iowa where they purchased land on the Missouri River, North of Council Bluffs.

Because John developed asthma, they decided to come west to the Willamette Valley where their daughter, Rosa, and husband had settled. In 1876, they and their married daughter, Elizabeth and husband, joined a wagon train composed of forty wagons, and crossed the plains.

Arriving in the Walla Walla Valley in the fall of 1876, Hannah decided that she wanted to go no farther because she said the water was good and she liked the greenness of the Walla Walla Valley. William Nichols permitted them to put their wagons in his grove south of Milton until they could build cabins. The men went to the mountains and cut logs and built cabins on what was called "Garrison Road" or the lower Walla Walla Road.

John and Hannah reared their family in the valley. Hand-hewn timbers can still be seen in the house that John built on his ‘home place’ on the old Milton Highway North of Freewater.

Elizabeth died in 1878 and was the second person buried in the old Pioneer Cemetery on the hill West of Milton-Freewater.

The Hughes boys, Charles and Walter, homesteaded land on the hills above Freewater until Walter left for the mines in Idaho.

Nellie married John Humphreys and went to the Willamette Valley.

Mary Etta married Lewis L. Johnson who came from Denmark and they lived the remainder of their lives in the Walla Walla Valley.

John Hughes died in 1894 and Hannah in 1907. They are buried in the Old Pioneer Cemetery.

Notes for LOUIS LENIUS JOHNSON:

LEWIS LENIUS and MARY ETTA JOHNSON

Lewis Lenius Johnson was born in Arhus, Denmark in 1864. When he was

nineteen years of age, in 1883, he came to America. After spending some

time in Brooklyn, New York; in Minnesota; and a year in Portland, Oregon, he

came to the Walla Walla Valley and worked for a Mr. Hasseltine and for John

J. Hughes and son who owned land in the Hudson's Bay area.

In 1887, he married Mary Etta Hughes who crossed the plains to Milton by

wagon train, riding a pony much of the way as she helped to herd the cows.

They bought a farm on the old Milton-Freewater Highway North of town. They

later purchased land from T.L. Ragsdale and moved East of the river. Lewis

and Etta reared their family of six children on "Eastside"; a closely-knit

community.

L.L. Johnson (as he was known) became a successful fruit farmer and exported

apples to Denmark and England. His son, Ben Johnson, now lives on the home

place and is a fruit grower. Lenius, who married Vera Tracy, passed away in

1948. The four daughters married and moved away. Metta married Romeo

Hubbs; Mabel married John Vipond; Lenora married Harry Weaver, and Lauretta

married Ivan Montanye. Ben married Pearl Carson.

Mary Etta Johnson passed away in 1930 and Lewis L. Johnson in 1932.
