The Kings
The Eldon King family, now of Milwaukie, Ore., but formerly of Weston and Milton-Freewater, made conspicuous and unusual contributions toward winning the war.
The r. r. met up with Mr and Mrs King in Weston, where they were visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs James King. From there they went to Milton-Freeater to visit her people -- meaning the Heidenrichs.
The Kings present an unusual case of father and two sons being in armed services at the same time. Father King, a petty officer, put in three years with the navy, having very vivid recollections of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Meanwhile, son Lawrence put in two years around New Hebrides and Admiralty islands, as a Seabee, both spots being rough places to be caught in at various times during the war. Lawrence has returned to civilian life.
Then there was Donald Lee King, who served as infantryman in the bloody Italian campaigns with the fifth army. He wears a silver star for gallantry in action.
The wife and mother of these fighting Kings didn't sit around and mope either. She pitched into essential war work and did a good job of it, too.

Merton Heidenrich Dies; Long Resident of milton
Milton - Merton Heidenrich of Milton died Wednesday night in a Walla Walla Hospital after a long illness. Born May 13 1898 in Milton, he had lived here all his life.
he was an East Side rancher. He was member of the Mac-Hi school board, director in the Blue Mountain Cooperative, and a member of the Milton Baptist Curch.
he leaves his wife, Veva; two sons Raymond A, at the University of Oregon, Merton Louis, Milton; one daughter, Mrs Beverly Walker, Oak Harbor, Wash; one sister, Mrs Eldon King, Oregon City, and two grandchildren.
Funeral is to be held Saturday afternoon from the Baptist church. The Rev. Fred Greene will officiate. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. cemtery here.

MILTON-FREEWATER - Merton L. Heidenrich, 76, of 54302 Birch Creek Road died May 30, 2003, at his home.
Funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 pm at First Baptist Church in Milton-Freewater with the Rev. Jim Johnson officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Walla Walla Community Hospice or the First Baptist Church through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater.
Mr. Heidenrich was born May 16, 1927, in Milton-Freewater to Merton A. and Veva L. Flock Heidenrich. He attended area schools, graduating from McLoughlin Union High School in 1945 before enlisting in the Army.
He was stationed in Puson, Korea, serving 13 months in the 51st Field Artillery Battalion. After his discharge, he attended Oregon State University. He studied agriculture there for three years, but quit school in 1949 to take over the family farm after his father's death.
On March 27, 1949, he married Phyllis Alexander in Milton-Freewater at the Federated Church.
In 1954 he began supplementing his farm income, working as a night watchman for the Milton Lumber Co. He later worked as a master mechanic and in 1965 started working for Boise Cascade in Wallula. His job titles over y27 years included mechanic, millwright and machinist. He retired in 1992 as vibrations analyst.
He and his wife continued to farm, and in 2001 they were honored with the Century Farm Award.
He enjoyed his career as a machinist and helped family and friends in their own repairs. He also combined his skills to create fanciful bugs and flowers from salvaged metal.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Archery Club, National Rifle Association, Milton-Freewater Shooting Team and American Legion. In the 1960's he also served on the McLoughlin Union High School Board.
A lover of the out-doors, enjoyed camping, fishing shooting and riding his four wheeler. He is survived by his wife at home; two sons, Louis "Bud" Heidenrich and Mert Heidenrich, both of Milton-Freewater, DeeDee Logsdon of Walla Walla, Susie Thurman of The Dalles, OR, and Annetta Beckwith of Ely, NV; sister, Beverly Eiffert of Milton-Freewater; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Heidenrich, and granddaughter, Sunshine Dawn Heidenrich.
