Bergevins set Pioneer Park family reunion
In 1858 two French woodsmen, Louis and Joseph Bergevin, left their family in Quebec and voyaged around Cape Horn to the New World.
Six years later two other Bergevin brothers, Clement and Damase, crossed the plains with a small band of young men to join the adventurers.
The reunion of the four brothers 112 years ago will be relived, symbolically, at Pioneer Park Sunday when more than 200 members of the Bergevin clan gather from points across the Northwest.
Sunday's celebrants are descendant of two of the four adventurers, Louis and Damase. Joseph and Clement never married.
Russell Bergevin, grandson of Damase, will act as master of ceremonies Sunday, according to his sister, Jeanne Butkus, general chairman.
Teh reunion will begin with registration at 11 a.m. at the park's Garden Center. A potluck dinner will follow at 1 p.m.
Special speaker will be Larry Dodd, curator of manuscripts and special selections at Penrose Memorial Library at Whitman College.

Pioneers of Washington
Damase Bergevin Pioneer In putting Plow to Lands
(Editor's note: This is the 40th of a series of 52 articles about typical builders who were active in the Walla Walla area during its early development.)
Damase or (Beldam) Bergevin was born near Quebec, Canada, March 31, 1840. He was of French ancestry and was reared near Quebec with no educational advantages except those found in the school of Experiences.
Bergevin came west in the early 1860's after spending some time in St. Joseph, Mo. He traveled across the plains with a small team of white horses accompanied by his brother, Clem. On reaching the Northwest, he settled at Frenchtown, the district between the Whitman monument and Lowden. In the early 1860's the population in this part of the valley was nearly all Canadian French.
Two brothers had preceded him and had been in this part of the country before 1860. They owned a pack train and packed to the mines in Idaho, Montana and California. Bergevin worked for these brothers for some time between the years 1875 and 1878.
Worked for Dr. Baker
Bergevin was also in the employ of Dr. Baker who built the narrow gauge railroad from Wallula to Walla Walla, this being the first railroad in the state of Washington. Bergevin and his brother, Clem, cut ties for this railroad and rove them down the Yakima River. Both were expert axemen and were in charge of the river drive.
In 1890, Bergevin was one of the first to break ground on the Umatilla Indian Reservation, having leased several pieces of land. One of these was leased from Chief Longhair for one crop by building a fence around the land.
In 1892, Bergevin was forced to discontinue his farming operations when his eyesight failed. he was one of the first to plow land in another section--the bunch grass on the hills of the home ranch, using two horses and a walking plow. His neighbors thought he was foolish to go to the work, believing the squirrels would eat him out of business.
Married at Mission
Bergevin was married to Miss Mary B. Allard on July 3, 1881 in the St. Rose Catholic Mission church at Frenchtown. A native of St. Paul, Minn., his wife came to the Walla Walla Valley with her parents, Oliver and Leocadie (Forrest) Allard in 1862. The Allards stopped in Helena, Mont., for some time on their way west as Allard plied his trade of carpentering. After coming to Walla Walla, he assisted in a large measure in the building of the town in the early days, erecting many of the first buildings in the town.
Mr. and Mrs. Bergevin were the parents of six children -- Damase and Leona, both deceased, Arthur A. Clarence C., Clement O., and Augustine A. Bergevin.
Bergevin helped build the St. Rose Mission in about 1872. all that is left of it is a marker near the highway and a cemetery on the hill. As one passes down the highway, he would be led to believe that only half-a-dozen graves are in the cemetery, but there are approximately 125 persons buried there.
Many Families Settled
Some of the family names of the early settlers in Frenchtown were Narcisse Raymond, Marcel Gagnon, Louis and Joe Bergevin, Damase and Clem Bergevin, Raymond Remillard, Jim Madigan, John Leaverton, John Hancock, Jim Driver, Oliver Allard, Frank Lapiel, Joe Perry, St. John LaDoucer, McDuffy, Bill Woodward, Berabey LaCourse, Ben Raymond, pamburn, Parizisen, LaRock, Bonifer, Beauchamp, Jim Rainville, McBAin, Antoine Murray, Joe Chairkay, Brisbouis, Joe Forest, Isaac Graville, Pellisier, Tellier, Bushman, St. Nea and LaFavre.
Names of some of the persons buried in the Frenchtown cemetry are Mrs. Braden, Mr. Brisbain, Mr. Beauchamp, Mr. Billinger, Mr. Chartier, James Dobson, Mrs. James Dobson and two daughters. Mr. Dauphin (Later changed to Duffy), Abe Dauphin, Mr. Farron, Mr. Gravelle and son, Mrs. Roselee Gagnon, Mrs. Julia Gagnon, Ben Gagnon (an infant) Miss Salina Gagnon, Mr. Medoce Gagnon, Baby Howard Gagnon, Mr. LaCourse, Frank Parrent, Mrs. Frank Parrent, and daughter, Mr. Parezean, Baptiste Pain, Mr. Porier and daughter, Mrs. Isabelle Rainville and son, Romine Remillard, Mrs. Romine Remillard and Daughter, George Raymond, Pierre Raymond, Mr. and Mrs. Narcisse Raymond and two daughters, miss Leonase Raymond, Mr. and Mrs. Tellier, Mrs. Jerry St. Denis, Miss Mamie St. Dennis, Miss Cecilia St. Dennis and two Allard Children.
Mathen Dauphin (Duffy) and wife Katherine and two relatives are buried just north of the Dauphin home which is the Buckley property, on a hill in the Matt Lowden field now owned by Lowden Johnson. They died before the St. Rose Mission and cemetery were in existence.

Bergevins Hold Reunion
Lowden-- The Bergevin family, descendants of pioneers in this are, held a reunion in the Frenchtown Community hall Saturday evening beginning with a potluck dinner. A large crowd attended. A dance followed the dinner.
Joe and Lewis Bergevin came here from Eastern Canada in 1858 and started a pack train between Walla Walla and The Dalles. They soon had 100 mules and packed into Montana and California.
Clem and Damase Bergevin, brothers, followed them west in 1861. They poled logs on the Yakima river to be used in construction of the Baker railroad between Walla Walla and the Columbia river.
Descendants of Damase Bergevin and his wife, Permelia Allard, who came from Canada in 1860; still live near Lowden. They include Arthur, Clem, Clarence, and Damase, children of the late J. D. (Damase) Bergevin. There are also two daughters, Mrs. Phillip Remillard of Camas, Louis Allard, a brother of Mrs. Bergevin lives in Walla Walla.

T. Bergevin Passes 90th Milestone
He doesn't use glasses, has his own teeth and manages without a cane--that' nonagenarian Thomas Bergevin, last of the three Bergevin brothers (Louis, Tom an Joe).
Tom celebrated his 90th birthday March 28 at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Davin at Lowden, where he now lives.
There have been bergevins in the Walla Walla Valley since Louis Bergevin, father of Tom, came from Canada in 1858 and settled on what is now known as the Clem Bergevin place. Louis was one of three brothers who married the three LaFave sisters, granddaughters of William McBean, chief trader for the Hudson's Bay co., at old Fort Walla Walla, so the Bergevin clan has multiplied with a superfluity of triple cousins.
Tom was born March 28, 1866 at Frenchtown and although he's back in the community which gave him birth, the intervening years took him somewhat afield.
For instance, he farmed several years in the Athena, Ore., area and at one time operated a store, Bergevin Brothers, in the town of Athena. A crop failure, before the turn of the century, wiped him out (he'd extended credit to the farmers who were unable to meet their obligations) and around 1907 he went back to farming, this time in Montana. He still has property there and until just recently used to drive his own car on trips to look after his holdings.
In addition to the one daughter, he has six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren adn scores of more distant relatives.

OSEPH CHARLES LAFORTUNE:An Illustrated History of Walla Walla County, State of Washington, by Professor W. D. Lyman, W.H. Lever, Publisher, 1901, page 449
Joseph LaFortune, whose connection with the city and county of Walla Walla dates back to 1883, was born in Canada in 1860. He acquired his education in the public schools of his native land, then removed to Michigan, where he was employed in the iron mines and in the lumber camps until he came to the state of Washington. For a number of years after his arrival here, he busied himself with various kinds of work, but in 1889 he received a permanent position from Mr. D. H. Henroid, by whom he was employed until 1894. He then engaged in business for himself in company with Mr. Genevay.
Our subject's interest in the town is manifested in many ways, but finds more specific expression in the fact that for years he has belonged to the volunteer fire department. He is quite a prominent man in fraternal circles, being an active member in the Catholic Knights of America, the Young Men's Institute, the Eagles, and the Improved Order of Red Men. On February 5, 1894, he was united in marriage to Miss Elmira Bergevin, a native of Walla Walla, daughter of early pioneer parents. They have three children, Lucille, Joseph adn Lester.
