Ballou, Volney James (deceased). The subject of this sketch, whose portrait appears in this work, was born in Saratoga county, New York, May 20, 1827. Here he attended the common schools. In 1839 his parents emigrated to Cuyahoga county, Ohio, where Volney finished his education, after which he sailed around the world, and was absent form port thirty three months, on a whaling voyage. During the California gold excitement in 1849, he returned to Ohio, and being possessed of more than an ordinary advanturous spirit, and enured to the hardships incident to a roving life, he at once emigrated to this State and commenced mining in El Dorado county, continuing in this pursuit until the Fall of 1853, at which time he settled in Santa Rosa valley, on the farm where he died. In 1864, he returned to the East, enlisting in the Subsistence Department, and was detailed as clerk in the commissary depot at Johnsonville, Tennessee, serving in this capacity for nine months, when he was honorably discharged, returning to Du Page county, Illinois. On March 29, 1867, he married at Naperville, in that county, Mrs. Michael Leonard, whose maiden name was Rosia A Mayer. She was born in Northampton county, Pennsylvania, November 2, 1839. Immediately after their marriage, they returned to this State. During his long residence in this county -- from 1853 to the time of his death on June 4, 1877 -- it can be truthfully said of Mr. Ballou that he was an honorable, upright gentleman. Starting out in life as he did, fro himself when quite young, he has achieved all his successes single-handed, and in the presence of obstacles which only the most indomitable energy and courage could have surmounted, has given him an honorable position among his fellow Men.

He married (1) JULIA H BARNARD 17 May 1865 in Du Page, Illinoiis2. She was born 17 Nov 1845 in Naperville, Du Page, Illinois, and died 17 Sep 1869 in Naperville, Du Page, Illinois. He married (2) ELIZA A NORTON 12 Jan 1875 in Du Page, Illinoiis, daughter of MICHAEL NORTON and MARY FITZGERALD. She was born 24 Mar 1848 in New York, and died 12 Aug 1924 in Naperville, Du Page, Illinois.
Notes for SYLVESTER ALLEN BALLOU:
SYLVESTER ALLEN BALLOU FAMILY
Sylvester A. Ballou was a direct descendant of Maturin Ballou, one of the founders of Rhode Island. He was born in Galway N.Y. in 1828. His father, Isaac Albee Ballou, and family moved to Breckenridge, Ohio, in 1832 where he was a farmer and maker of shoes. "Ves," as Sylvester was called, taught school from 1848-9, when he and his brother Volney, sailed around Cape Horn to try their luck in the gold fields, where they arrived in August, 1850.
The brothers walked to Cold Springs, El Dorado Country, "a teeming hive of gold seekers", where Ves became a leading citizen. He founded a Lyceum and the first public library in California in 1853. That year he was elected to the State Assembly in Benicia and made chairman of a committee to investigate sites for a permanent capitol. Ballou’s 7-page document recommending Sacramento, as well as many bills he sponsored, are in the California Archives.
In the summer of 1854 he returned to Naperville where his father had purchased a farm, south of the second bridge along the DuPage River In the spring of 1855 he and his brother Orlando returned to California, living near Quincy where they prospected along the Feather River and packed supplies to the miners’ camps. He was the first teacher in the Pioneer school there, now a California landmark.
In 1858 Ballou was elected to the Assembly again. Newspapers praised him as a hard-working and principled legislator, a capable committee chairman, an effective orator and the best parliamentarian in the house. He was famous for his unflinching stand on the question of statehood for Kansas, emphasizing popular sovereignty rather than his anti-slavery convictions.
In 1859 Ballou was elected to the Senate from Butte and Plumas Counties. His speeches, significant for their intelligent and moral reasoning and also popular for their witty and ironic cast, were often printed on the front pages of the Sacramento and San Francisco papers.
When the legislature was over in 1860, Ballou, convinced that war was imminent, returned to Naperville. He joined the Union Army, became a. major serving in Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee, and won praise as being "not only wise, active and efficient, but thoroughly honest."
In June 1865 he married 20-year-old Julia Barnard and they returned to San Francisco to fulfill his appointment as Chief Commissary Officer of the Army, Department of California. They came back to Naperville in 1866 and their son, Ray, was born the following year. Julia died of pneumonia in 1869.
In 1871 he rented his farm and went to Indian Territory where he engaged in building the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad. In 1873 he returned to California by train (5½ days) and wrote articles for the Naperville Clarion on the great changes in that country. In 1874 his father, Isaac Albee, went to live with his brother; Volney in Santa Rosa, California.
Ves proposed to Eliza Norton in a 6-stanza poem. She was the daughter of Mary and Michael Norton of Irish decent, a beautiful 26-year-old school teacher in the Ellsworth School, with a lively personality. They were married on Jan. 12, 1875. The only time they were separated during their 24 years was when Ves joined the silver rush to Leadville, Colorado, in 1879, an unsuccessful mining venture. They had 4 children, Ralph, Mary Eloise (May) and the twins, Alice and Edith. May married Bernard C. Beckman Oct 24, 1900. Their 3 daughters were Bernice (Mrs. Stuart S. Ball), Eleanor (Mrs. Albert R. Martin) and Sylvia (Mrs. Robert Warner).
Ves enlarged the home he had built for Julia into a fine house, still standing, surrounded by numerous tall condominiums. He bought a second farm adjoining his to the north, running up the road of the second bridge. (The children attended the little red school house that stood across the river to the north.) He found many arrowheads when turning over those fields for the first time. The tenant farmer lived on this farm and there were hired hands when extra help was needed. He kept a journal noting the weather and planting of crops.
The Ballou family had a merry life with games, spelling bees, and constant reading. There was a pleasant social life between the Ballous and other gentlemen farmers south of town, the Greens, the Barnards and the Royces. They moved to Naperville about 1890, the corner of Brainard and Highland Ave.
The Martin Mitchell Museum has the canvas covered truck that Ballou took around Cape Horn, his tall silk hat that he wore to the legislature in California, and the field desk that accompanied him throughout the Civil War

Then the family moved to San Francisco, Calif., from which plac, in 1878, they first went to Portland, ORe., then by boat to Wallula, thence to Walla Walla, and finally settled on what is now the old homestead, "Brooklands". From letter of Florence(Ballou) Brown, Spokane, 1032; "Oour original farm was called 'Birch Brook', where I was born in 1880. Father bought it in 1878 and moved the family up from California. Then he found the title was not quite clear and had to use his homestead rights to prove up on it. He bought more land until he had 388 acres of the best land in Walla Walla Valley, containing four streams and fifty-two springs. In 1889 he sold 'Birch Brook Farm' and 80 acres, and moved to another house on the place, which we called 'Crystal Springs Farm'. There he had a large dairy, 20 acres of pears, and an apple orchard. He sold baled timothy hay to the goverment for cavalry horses. In 1899 he sold this place and a hundred acres and built 'Brooklands'. I was married here in 1903."

Mather, Samuel. The question of supply and demand has been further complicated during recent years by the requirements of pure food laws, which necessitate the production of articles of consumption according to rules proviced for in the various acts passed. Some of the most aggressive business men of Du Page County have found it to their advantage to embark in enterprises having for their object the manufacture of wholesome food products, which because of their purity command good prices in any market. One of these men is Samuel Mather secretary and treasurer of the Naperville Co-operative Co., manufacturers of high grade butter and cheese. He was born March 7, 1847, at Whallonsburgh, Essex County, N. Y., being a son of Joshua E. and Maria (Frisbee) Mather. Joshua E. Mather wasz a mechanic who at one time was engaged in manufacturing iron articles. He came to Illinois in 1852, becoming a farmer, and dying upon his property in 1880. His wife survived him until 1891. They 3were farming people all their lives.
From 1864 to 1865, Mr. Mather attended the Naperville Academy, then returning to the farm, conducted it until 1873. He then had some experience as a ranchman in California from 1873 to 1880. In 1883, he came to Du Page County from Will County, locating in Lisle Township. In 1888, with William King and J.P. Rickert, he organized the Naperville Co-operative Co., with himself as secretary and treasurer. The creamery has a capacity of from 2,700 to 30,000 pounds of milk per day, according to the supply. The business has steadily advanced, and the product is kept up to a high standard of excellence.
Mr. Mather was married November 21, 1866, at Lisle, Ill., to Malvina Ballow. The children born of this marriage werer: Glen E., deceased; Zillia A., deceased; Roy a., Fred E., Roscoe, deceased, and Ethel M. Roy and Fred were educated at Champain, Ill., the latter being with the St. Paul Railroad as civil engineer, while the former is with the American Bridge Co. at Ambridge, Penn. Zillia died when twenty-two years old, after graduating from the Northwestern College at Naperville. Ethel married Dean D. Gross, and her husband is a merchant of Yankton, S.D.; Daniel, their son, is ex-postmaster of this place.
Mr. Mather has always been active in Republican party matters, serving as Alderman from the Third Ward of Naperville during 1907, 1908 and 1909, and in 1910, he was elected Mayor. During his administration, the people enjoyed a businesslike administration, and a number of improvements were inaugurated and carried out. He is a Past Master of Euclid Lodge, No. 65, A.F. & A. M., and Past High Priest of Euclid Chapter, No. 13, R. A. M. While not affiliated with any religious denomination, he believes in the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man. Mr. Mather was Postmaster here for six years, filling a part of this time as assistant.

P. A. BUELL -- born on a farm near Cleveland, Ohio, Park Arbington Buell, generally known as P.A. Buell, was the son of Sidney Buell and Amelia W. (Ballou) Buell. After his father's death, his mother brought her little family to California, and built a home at Santa Rosa.
P.A. Buell remained at home until he was grown, receiving his education in the public schools. he came to Stockton in the early '80s and entered the employ of the White & Thomas Planing Mill Company, remaining with them until he went into business for himself. He organized the P.A. Buell Planing Mill & Lumber company, with office at Center and Sonora streets. The mills covered an area of 50,000 square feet, and the yards occupied over ten acres on the south bank of Mormon channel.
After establishing himself in Stockton, Mr. Buell married Miss Ada Moore, the daughter of H.H. Moore, a well-known pioneer resident and businessman of the city. Three children were born to Mr and Mrs. Buell: Leon Moore, Henry H. and Amy. The eldest son died at the age of eight years. Henry H. is a graduate of Stanford University, and an electrical engineer by profession. He married Miss Rheda Ridenour, and they have two sons, Warren Henry, and Robert Allen. Amy graduated from Miss Head's school in Berkeley, and received her degree from Mills College. She is the wife of John Stewart Greaves and they have one daughter, Nancy Jane.
P.A. Buell was a stanch Republican in politics, and fraternally a knight Templar Mason and a member of Charity Lodge, I.O.O.F. He was prominently identified with many affairs which were beneficial to the public good. He was the organizer and president of the Commercial Association which was instrumental in having the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad built from Stockton; was identified with the building of the Sierra Railroad; was a director of the Jackson, Sutter & Amador Railway Company, whose line was then in course of construction. He also visited Washington in the interest of waterways of California. His last prominent work was the organization of the San Joaquin Valley Association, embracing the twelve counties forming the low lands and slopes of that fertile valley. he was also the president of the Bown Mining Company of Tuolumne.
Mr Buell continually and unselfishly devoted a large proportion of his time and best effort aiding and encouraging any worthy enterprise which he felt would redound to the advantage of his community. In his sudden and premature death on April 4, 1900, Stockton lost a stalwart supporter of every civic movement for the welfare of his adopted city.
