4. ISREAL NICOLS2 YOUNG (WILLIAM FAIN1) was born 27 Nov 1843 in Ashmore, , Il, and died 26 Jan 1933 in Baker, Union, Oregon8. He married ADELINE FURGASON 01 Mar 1867 in Bakerville, Union, Oregon, daughter of ALEXANDER FERGUSON and ELIZABETH BAKER. She was born 01 Mar 1844 in Clinton, Ny, and died 11 Dec 1931 in Baker, Union, Oregon9.

brief outline of the early history of the state of Oregon." Chicago?: Western

ISREAL N. YOUNG

Those men who form the bone and sinew, as it were, of any thrifty community are such as steadily and continuously meet the changing scenes of life with their freight of responsibility or adversity of success with the same uprightness, candor and unflinching determination to make the best of everything and then take hold and work out that end; such a man is the one whose name introduces this paragraph, and such has been his record from the time that he was thrown on the world at an early date until the present time.

Mr. Young was born in Ashmore, Illinois, on November 27, 1843, being the son of William and Nancy (Nicols) Young, natives respectively of Tennessee and Illinois. In this latter state the parents resided until the time of their death. When very young our subject was forced to live with strangers on account of the death of his parents, but when his eldest brother was married he made his home with his family and in company with them came to northern Missouri in 1856. Here they remained until 1863, when they toiled through the arduous journey from that point to the Grande Ronde valley, in this state. Here the elder brother took a homestead and our subject engaged in freighting until 1867, when he settled on a farm in the Grande Ronde valley, and four years later he went to Eagle valley, where he is at the present time engaged in farming and stock raising. He has bought and sold considerable land in the valley, but he still retains his old homestead. In political matters he allies himself with the Democratic party and is generally one of the delegates to the county conventions, while in school matters he is active, and is useful in advancing the interests of education in serving on the school board of his home district. Fraternally he is affiliated with the I.O.O.F., Lodge 123, Eagle valley.

The marriage of Mr. Young and Miss Adaline, daughter of Alex and Elizabeth (Baker) Furgason, was solemnized in 1867, and they have become the parents of the following children: Valentine; Effie; Edith; and infant, that died in 1874; Harley, who died in 1875; Lillian; Bertha; Lena. Mrs. Young's parents were natives of New York and agriculturists there, but in 1866 they came across the plains to the valley where the daughter now lives, and in this place they lie buried. While en route to Oregon their train was attacked by Indians, who secured all of the stock. Search was made and the stock recovered, but in the fight one of the Indians was killed, and when they came to examine his body they found that he was a white renegade, and evidences pointed to the belief that other members of the band were also white. This occurred near the Black Hills.

P. J. BROWN

He was born in Iowa, on April 1, 1854, and lived there until he was ten years

of age, when he came across the plains with ox teams, his parents, A. J. and

Martha J. (Harp) Brown at that time migrating to Oregon. His father still lives

in Baker City, but his mother died in 1874. The first settlement was in Eagle

Valley, Union county, where our subject received the major portion of his

educational discipline in the public, schools, after completing which he went

to work on a farm for wages until 1875, when he assisted to drive some cattle

to Nevada, remaining there for two years teaming. Subsequent to this he returned

to Eagle Valley and purchased a farm and to the cultivation of this and teaming

he devoted himself for two years, and on New Year's day, 1880, he was married to

Miss Zona E., daughter of W. N. and Nancy A. (Sublette) Young. His wife is a

native of Illinois, her family being pioneers to this region in 1876 and her

father still lives in Baker City, but her mother died on July 30, 1900. To our

subject have been born the following, children: S. Ella; William J., deceased;

Roscoe P.; Chester J., deceased; June C.; Sylvester W. After the marriage

Mr. Brown continued on his farm until 1897, when he moved with his entire

family into Baker City. He still owns the farm of one hundred acres and an

elegant home in Baker City, besides eight hundred head of cattle. In addition

to this he holds in partnership with Tom Phrophet two ranches, on eon Powder

river of five hundred and sixty acres and another of three hundred and twenty

acres near Sparta.

In fraternal affiliations he is with the A.O.U.W., and with the K. of P. In

political matters he has always been active and prominent and frequently has

been called upon by the people to discharge the duties of public office. In

1892 he was chosen commissioner of Union county and was later offered the

office again, also the office of representative to the state legislature,

but he was constrained by the pressure of business affairs to refuse both. he

was clerk of his home school board for ten years and was director, when he

succeeded in securing the erection of the finest house for school purposes

in Eagle Valley. Mr. Brown is a man who has the genuine qualities of worth

that command the respect and win the confidence of his fellows, which he

enjoys to the fullest extent.

PLEAS BROWN PASSES

After an illness of about two months, due to complications following

influenza, death claimed P. J. Brown at his home in Baker at 3:45 on Friday

afternoon, May 3rd. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon, many residents

of Eagle Valley being in attendance.

"Pleas" as the deceased was generally called, was born in the state of Iowa

sixty-five years ago and came to Oregon with his parents in 1864, locating in

Eagle Valley, where he secured his education. He worked as a farm hand in this

neighborhood until '75 when he assisted in driving a large band of cattle to

Nevada, where he remained for about two years before returning to Eagle Valley

and engaging in the stock business, of which he made a marked success by his

honesty and square dealing.

On January 1, 1879, he was married to Miss Zona Young, a daughter of Mr. and

Mrs. Newt Young, the ceremony being performed in the house now ocupied by Mr.

and Mrs. J. W. Carnahan and family. The present townsite of New Bridge is

located on a part of the homestead where Mr. and Mrs. Brown dwelt for many

years.

Mr. Brown was elected commissioner of Union county in 1892 and was offered the

office again but declined, he likewise refused to be ca candidate for state

representative. He served as clerk of our school board, also as a director,

for several terms, and always manifested great interest in the welfare and

improvement of this community.

About four years ago he sustained injuries at a wreck in the stockyards at

Baker as a result of which one of his limbs was amputated last spring. In

spite of this handicap he continued in business, driving his own car or riding

horseback with apparently no inconvenience.

Many a stockman in Eagle Valley, as well as other parts of the county, owe

their success to the assistance and advice given by "Pleas." His word was as

good as his bond and he placed great confidence in the word of others. Many

transactions, often amounting to tens of thusands of dollars, were made by

verbal agreement only, and he never failed to carry out his part of the

contract even though it meant financial loss to him, which was the case many

times when buyng or selling sheep and cattle.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Roscoe and Sylvester, and three

daughters, Mrs. Ellen Lawrence, Mrs. June Lew and Miss Zona Brown, all of whom

reside in or near Baker and were near him during the last hours.

To the bereaved relatives there is offered heartfelt sympathy by unnumbered

friends throughout the state, but greater than all is the consolation that the

life of the departed was not spent in vain for he worked with this motto in

mind "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Kennewick Now Home of Pair with Long Pioneer Heritage

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Witherrite, who live at 403 North Everett St., Kennewick, have it over most old timers in the matter of long association with Northeastern Oregon or Souteastern Washington.

She is a native of La Grande, where she was born 77 years ago; he came to Eastern Umatilla from the Willamette valley as a boy of three years, 79 years ago. In that long period both have never lived elsewhere than in the area mentioned.

It must be noted, however, that within the territory referred to, they have resided in numerous places.

Hudson Bay Resident

Witherrite’s people located on upper Birch creek, northwest of Milton-Freewater. From there they moved to the area below Umapine which has long been spoken of as Hudson Bay, that designation being a corruption of Hudson’s bay company farm of long ago.

The family acquired land via timber culture means, and it was long known as the Weatherman farm. In an interview with the pair at Kennewick the other day, Witherrite defined what area was considered Hudson Bay district – he said it included the Rice, Young, Goodman and Sturgis places.

Visit ends in Romance

Meanwhile, the Israel Young family moved from La Grande to Eagle valley, being one of the first three settlers around Newbridge. Part of their family was Edith, born before the Eagle valley move. She attended school at Island City when she was 16.

Immediately prior to 1890, Edith Young paid a visit to the Youngs in Hudson Bay, being of the same clan. There she met her future husband. The romance led the couple to wedlock in Walla Walla nearly 58 years ago. The Rev. T. Ryder officiated.

The couple had a home nearer Umapine, known earlier as Vincent, lived in Walla Walla very briefly and then Crow creek in Wallowa county called them. That district is remote even now, and much more so in those early years.

They also resided near Enterprise for a time and then located in Richland in 1927 where they resided until 1934. That year they sold out and moved to Kennewick.

Witherrite’s mother is buried in Valley Chapel, and his father, who was Mitchell Witherrite, two brothers and a sister were buried in Bowlus Cemetery.

Have Four Children

The Witherrites have four children: Vern of Oroville; Ray of Seattle; Lyal, who lives four miles below the Imnaha store; Daphene (Mrs. George) Nelson of Weston. The Kennewick couple follow articles on this page which are written by their granddaughter La Rayne Nelson, the Roving Reporter’s Tokyo representative.

The year 1877 saw a big flood in the Snake and the Columbia, Witherrite revealed. He also remembers that the railroad was built down VanSycle canyon that year. It was also the year in which he helped run a herd of Weston country cattle to the range on the south bank of the Snake.

Skulls Intrigue Him

"We were moving along the Columbia (where Attalia now stands) letting the stock feed as we went", he told the interviewer. ‘Before we reached what is now Burbank we headed up toward Five-mile on Snake river. In the swale just south of Burbank we found a big collection of human skulls, though we saw no other bones.

"The incident impressed me. Shortly after that, while camped on the Snake, we saw an Indian procession moving down river carrying a man’s body on the usual pole conveyor – two poles snubbed to a pony, the free ends dragging, and on that contraption was the body.

"Later I went down to where the skulls were and I saw a platform as high as a man, with a lot of fresh brush piled on it. While I didn’t investigate too closely. I am convinced that the dead man was buried by placing his body on that platform.

"All this led me to believe that Indians of that time and place practiced that sort of burial. If there are any oldtimers who can either support or disprove that contention, I wish they would write to the Roving Reporter. I am anxious to know if I am right."

In his youth, Witherrite helped haul grain to Wallula where it was stacked on the docks for movement down river by boat. Rail transportation was a later facility.

Witnessed Shooting

Away back in the early 1890’s Witherrite was a bystander at part of the rumpus when a trooper from the fort near Walla Walla was killed in a soloon argument. The killer was a man named A.J. Hunt and by the time the soldiers had organized their vengeance program. Witherite wa walking along Main street, close by the courthouse fence. An armed soldier told him to cross the street and keep away.

Unaware then of what was soon to happen, he stopped to "find the scor". Then it happened, Hunt was being brought out from the jail in the hands of irate soldiers. Witherrite tells what he saw:

"I saw him fall, either from stumbling or being knocked down. Then someone shot him at close range. Other soldiers followed suit, each taking a shot at the prostrate form as, he passed it."

ORSON MOODY PASSES

Orson Moody, who was looking after his business in Eagle Valley last week,

returned to Baker on Thursday evening suffering with influenza. He was

immediately taken to the hospital but pneumonia developed which resulted in

his death at about nine o'clock on Monday evening, Oct. 21st.

Mr. Moody was one of the most prominent sheep men in the state and for years

was a resident of Eagle Valley. Besides a wife and two young sons, there are

left to mourn his death, a father and five brothers.

The funeral was held in Baker today, a number of relatives and friends from

this section attending. If attainable, we will publish a synopsis of Mr.

Moody's life as he has a host of friends here and his business success was

co-incident with the development of Eagle Valley.

Baker City Herald (Jul/22/2006)

Franklin Lew

Franklin R. Lew, 87, of Baker City, died July 12, 2006, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

At his request, there will be no funeral. A family reunion and a time to honor Franklin is being planned for August 2006.

Franklin was born Nov. 11, 1918, at Baker City to Frank and June Brown Lew, a pioneer family. He attended Baker schools and was a 1937 Baker High School graduate. He later took an accounting course from La Salle Extension University and many appraisal courses in Sacramento, Calif.

In 1939, he went to work for Douglas Aircraft in Los Angeles. It was there that he was called to full-time service with the Oregon National Guard.

He was a master sergeant in chemical warfare and was honorably discharged in September of 1945. He returned to Baker City to work at Lew Bros. Tire Shop helping his father, who had started the business with his brothers years before.

After his father died, Franklin and his cousin, Pleas Brown, purchased the tire shop. It was during this time that Franklin and Phyllis Miller were going together. They were married on Sept. 20, 1947, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Baker City.

Franklin later sold the tire shop to Pleas and moved to Alturas, Calif., where he worked in the office of Loveness Lumber Co. He then went to work for Modoc County as auditor-appraiser. He was appointed assessor in 1968, and served as assessor until he retired in 1984.

As assessor, Franklin was on the state Timber Advisory Committee, served as president of the Northern Assessors Association (consisting of 27 counties) and the Modoc County precedent-setting case involving possessory interest assessment regarding grazing and public lands at the time the Timber Yield Law came into effect whereby a timber yield tax was assessed upon timber harvest. That was also at the time Proposition 13 was passed by the California voters in June of 1978. He had many friends in the assessors association and also on the State Board of Equalization.

Franklin was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge, having joined in Baker and transferring to the Alturas Lodge, No. 1756. He had the oldest in years membership at the time of his death. In Alturas, he was president of the Alturas Rifle & Pistol Club, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a life member of the American Legion, and also active in the Kiwanis.

Franklin was also the founding president of the Eastern Oregon Powder River Sportsman Club, and built the membership up to almost 1,500. He was vice president of the Oregon State Sportsmen's Council for one year.

His hobbies included fishing, shooting, golfing, fly tying, playing bridge and reading.

He and Phyllis moved to Klamath Falls for medical reasons, leaving Alturas after living there for 35 years. After two years in Klamath Falls, they decided to move back home to Baker City after being away for 40 years.

Franklin was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Jane Lew; his brother, Lawrence Lew; and his brother-in-law, H.W. "Bill" Miller.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Phyllis of Baker City; sisters-in-law, Frances Lew of Ceres, Calif., and Monte Miller of Walla Walla, Wash.; nephews, Larry Lew and his wife, Cheryl, of Ceres, Calif., Vaughn Lew and his wife, Glenda, of Ceres, Calif., Doug Lew and his wife, Sharon, of LaQuinta, Calif., Rusty Lew and his wife, Elizabeth, of Hawaii, Rob Miller of Baker City, LaMarr Miller of Walla Walla, Wash., and Mike Miller and his wife, Joan, of Walla Walla, Wash.; nieces, Dixie Ziemer and her husband, Larry, of Halfway, Mary Kincaid and her husband, Jerry, of Baker City, Marty Rose and her husband, Bud, of Kennewick, Wash., and Laurie Miller of Walla Walla, Wash.; a cousin, Edith Lucas, and her husband, Walter, of Danville, Calif.; and many cousins at Polson and Missoula, Mont.

He especially wanted to mention his old friend since tricycle days, Bill Kirkpatrick; an old fishing budding in Alturas, Marvin Kroepelin; and his many assessor friends, especially, Josie Johnson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children or to the charity of one's choice through Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.
