Chester, July 4 -- Following funeral services conducted here by Rev J Torrance Harvey, the remains of mrs Mary Ann walden have been sent to Cottage Grove, Ore., for interment.
Mrs Walden was born in that town 87 years ago in the pioneer era of the state. In Weston, Ore in 1877 she married Rev Nathan Walden, a widely known Baptist minister. MR Walden later held pulpits in Idaho and in Canada.
The family came here in 1909 and remained until 1922, 2qhen they moved to Cottage Grove where Rev Mr Walden died in 1927. MRs Walden then returned to Chester.
Mrs Walden is survived by seven sons, George, Champion, Alta, Canada, John, Eugene, Oreg., Mark, Ralph and Paul, Stavely Alta, and Roy and Claude of Chester, and 13 grandchildren.

Former Resident Dies
Mrs. Rose Walden, a former Weston resident, died suddenly at Seaside, Calif., June 27. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Henry Beamer of Weston, six sons, Orval B. Walden, John L. Walden, Theodore R. Walden, and Fay F. Walden of Milton-Freewater, Virgil Walden and Leroy Walden of Seaside: a step-son, Ernest Walden of Milton-Freewater, 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was the daughter of the late Ira and Ellen Bell, and was born near Salem, Ore. on September 30, 1876. She moved to Eastern Oregon with her parents when 15 years old. After her marriage to Walden they lived on Weston Mountain until they retired in 1929 and moved to Milton-Freewater.
Fay and Theodore Walden went to California to attend the funeral.

Ernest E Walden, who has been among other things, assessor in the eastern portion of Umatilla county many years, comes from a family of early settlers in Oregon and Umatilla County.
First Walden Migrated to Area in 1845.
Over a period of 20 years, much of Umatilla county's east end has been assessed by Ernest E Walden of Milton-Freewater. The veteran deputy asessor is a busy beaver right now compiling the statistics from which next year's taxes will be computed. This is his twenty-first year in this highly important assignment.
His territory embraces the district from Pendleton to the state line but due to the late start and the bad roads created by the recent disturbances, he fears he will not be able to cover the territory without some help.
Family an Old One.
Over approximately the same period of time Walden has been a school director in his community. But even more important -- to history-minded folk -- are the unique associations his parents and grandparents had with early development of Oregon.
The Roving Reporter managed on day recently to prevail on the busy deputy assessor to stand still long enough to review some of the Walden family history. This is Walden's busy season.
Came in '45
Benjamin E Walden, my grandfather, came out to Oregon with the big train of 1845," he said, "They were met in Southern Idaho by Marcus Whitman, with the advice that Indians were menacing. One group of California bound men without families decided they would join in with the Oregon bound wagons, making a total of 90 wagons in the train.
"About where La Grande now is the train was met by a large number of chiefs and their warriors. Whitman started a council that lasted far into the night. Finally the peace pipe was lighted and the train breathed easier. When the train reached the top of the Blues, Whitman left and returned to the mission while the immigrants pushed on to the Willamette Valley."
McLoughlin Incident
At Oregon City, Walden's grandfather helped build a house for Dr.McLoughlin. Hudson's Bay company factor at Fort Vancuver. This building more recently became part of the McLoughlin museum.
Not long after, the Waldens were settled in the Waldo hills, six miles east of Salem. There a home was built and in it was born John Walden, more fully referred to presently. Only a few years ago Ernest Walden returned to the Waldo hills and found the original home -- now 100 years old -- still in use, but as part of a tavern.
The present owners revealed that the title for the land originally passed to Ben Walden from the government in 1849.
John to Weston
By 1871 John Walden set up a family domicile near Weston and there Ernest E Walden was born. In due time, Ernest Walden took a shine to Nellie Purdy, over Athena way. She belonged to the same Purdy clan which at one time opereated Bingham Springs. He not only took a shine to Nellie, he married the girl.
Mr and Mrs Walden found some wheat land around Prescott which they liked so well they farmed it for 20 years, and then moved over to the Freewater country, where they have since resided.
Walden has two half-brothers, Orville and Ted, who also live in the Milton-Freewater district.

THEODORE R. WALDEN
Longtime resident, Theodore R. "Ted" Walden, 92, died August 27, 1994 at his daughter's home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2 pm at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel, 902 S. Main, M-F. Officiating was Pastor Steve Knox of the First Christian Church. Private interment followed in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Reception for friends and family was held at the Wesley United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made to the charity of choice through the funeral home.
One of eight children, Walden was born Feb. 24, 1902 on Weston Mountain to John E. and Rose Bell Walden. His father was the original Weston Mountain homesteader and later the mountain was named after his family. John Walden was the son of Benjamin and Sarah Cummins Walden who were pioneers of ths area.
He spent his early years on the mountain, attending little Weston Mountain School. He later went to high school in the town of Weston and then attended Columbia College in Milton, OR which is now the City Hall.
He married Dora F. Hicks on July 23, 1927 in Idaho, then returned to Weston Mountain to start their life together. After a few years they moved to the valley. Mr. Walden did all types of work. During the depression he surveyed all the area schools. During WWII he worked at the McCaw Military Hospital in Walla Walla. Later he built several cabins for a rental court on Elizabeth St. After that project was finished he worked for Angerman Brothers at their "Ideal Bakery" in Freewater and later for St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla until he retired.
After his retirement Mr. and Mrs. Walden decided to help raise Umatilla Indian Foster children. They later opened Mr. Mom's Antiques and sold antiques to the public from their home for over 30 years.
Walden was a historian but was also interested in all current affairs. He posted his property for no hunting or trespassing as he didn't want any little animal to be disturbed while nesting. The Walden home was like a private wildlife sanctuary.
He is survived by his daughters: Mrs. Al (Evelyn) Zielinski of Temple City, CA, Mrs. Harold (Verna) McCubbin of San Jose, CA and Mrs. Harvey (Rheta) Foland of M-F, OR; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on January 1, 1994, step-brother, Ernest; brothers, Orville, Lowell, Roy, Fay and Virgil; sister Bertha Beamer.

OHMART -- At the residence, 285 South 16th street, March 10, Gracia Lee Ohmart, wife of Roy V. Ohmart; mother of Valleda W. and Lee Virgil Ohmart, both of Salem; sister of Benjamin W. Lee of Pendleton. Member of the First M. E. church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 12, at 1:30 p.m., from the chapel of W. T. Rigdon company. Interment I. O. O. F. cemetery.

MRS. ROY OHMART CALLED BY DEATH
Death brought release to Mrs. Roy V. Ohmart, 285 South 16th street Sunday afternoon following a prolonged illness. The funeral is announced for this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the W. T. Rigdon Co. chapel. Rev. J. E. Milligan, pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate, assisted by Dr. E. S. Hammond. Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
Mrs. Ohmart's maiden name was Gracia Lee, and she was born in Goldendale, Wash., Feb. 19, 1885. Her father, William Lucas Lee, a veterinary Surgeon, was born in Indiana, and his father, Daniel Lee, a native of Virginia, was a relative of Robert E. Lee. Mrs. Ohmart's mother's name was Martha Walden, who was born at Macleay in Waldo hills Sept. 15, 1855. The latter's father, Benjamin Walden, and mother, crossed the plains in 1845.
The Dr. Lee family moved from Goldendale to Roseburg and the father died there. Mrs. Ohmart attended Umpqua academy and Drain normal school and taught school for several years prior to her marriage which occurred Oct. 21, 1906. To the union were born two children, Velleda Ohmart, who is bookkeeper at The Oregon Statesman office, and Lee Ohmart, employed in the tax collection department at the court house. Members of the family, who had cared for her during her long illness were at her bedside when she passed away. A brother, Benjamin W. Lee, of Pendleton, Ore., also survives.
For over thirty years Mrs. Ohmart had been a faithful member of the First Methodist church of this city, and until illness prevented, active in its organizations.

Notes for ROY VIRGIL OHMART:
Roy V. Ohmart, who is successfully engaged in the general mercantile business and also in a feed store three miles south of Salem on Commercial street, was born in Salem, April 19, 1878. His parent are Adam and Velleda (Smith) Ohmart, who are now residing near Salem. He is the eldest of a family of four children. The others are Lois, Reynolds and Chauncey, all at home. Roy V. Ohmart, after completing a course in the public schools of Salem, was a student for three years at the Willamette University and on leaving college he took charge of his father's farm, which he operated until 1904. At that date he bought a tract of land consisting of one hundred anf forty-four acres, situated seven miles southwest of Salem, and farmed that until 1909. Subsequently he purchased his present general merchandise store, which is located four miles from the statehouse and is known as the Liberty Store. It is situated on a tract of four acres, on which are planted fruit trees, and it has also in connection a house and barn. Mr. Ohmart also owns twenty acres of timberland. In 1906 he was united in marriage to Miss Gracie Lee, who was a native of Washington and a descendant of Jason Lee. They are the parents of one child, Valleda. In politics Mr Ohmart is a stalwart republican and he has served as road supervisor, also being much interested in the cause of education, he has filled the office of school director for his district. Both he and his wife are zealous members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and fraternally he is identified with the Artisans. Although still a young man, Mr. Ohmart is well started in the business world and his conscientious and efficient methods in handling his work give promise of rapid progress. OBITUARY:
Death Takes R. V. Ohmart.
Roy V. Ohmart, 90, 1955 Dallas Highway NW, a life-long resident of the Salelm area, died Friday at a Salem Nursing home. He had been ill the past six months.
After attending Salem schools, the Salem School of Commerce and Willamette University, he operated the family farm on a donation land claim of his grandfather, Frabitus Smith, and later operated his own farms in the Liberty, Pringle, and Rosedale areas. At one time he operated the old Liberty store and prior to his retirement he was office manager of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mills. He was a member of Methodist Church, Salem Historical Society, and Salem Geologic Society.
Surviving are daughter Velleda Lizberg, Portland; son, Lee, Salem; sister Lois Ohmart, Salem; brother Reynolds Ohmart, Salem; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Virgil T. Golden mortuary, Rev. S. Raynor Smith officiating. Private interment will be at Pioneer Cemetery.

Long Resident of M-F Dies at Home
MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore. – Charles Augustus Winn of this city died early Friday morning at his home after an extended illness. He was born Aug 15, 1865, at Soda Springs, Ida., while his parents were en rout west from Missouri.
He was a retired farmer and had lived in this community all of his life.
Survivors are: his wife, Lulu Winn, and two stepdaughters, Mrs. Versa Cook, Portland, and Mrs. Agnes Lower, Walla Walla; two sisters, Mrs. Ella Rose, Boise. And Mrs. Alice Quinn, Enterprise, Ore.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday from a local chapel, Rev Fred Greene officiating. Burial will be in the Weston Cemetery.

Tim McBride Dies Suddenly Thursday
Tim McBride of Ferndale, who had lived in this Blue Mountain area since the age of two, died suddenly at his home on Thursday morning March 13. He had not been ill and his death was a profound shock to his family and many friends.
On November 24, 1957, the McBride's had celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary with a reception in the American Legion building, where a host of friends called during the afternoon hours.
Thomas Leo (Tim) McBride was born on December 2, 1882, at Edina, MO, and came to Weston in 1884. He was married to Ethel O'Harra in Weston on November 27, 1907, and the couple farmed a wheat and pea ranch near Weston until 1941, when they moved to Ferndale. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge and Dokies, and also the Methodist church.
Survivors are his wife, Ethel, at home; one son, Lawrence McBride of Milton-Freewater; a brother Perl A. (Purd) McBride who also lives at the Ferndale residence; two grandsons, Dick and Steve McBride; six nieces abd one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, March 15, in the M-F Christian Church with Rev. Donald S. Campbell and Rev. Paul Moore of Athena officiating. Burial will be in the Weston Cemetery.

LAWRENCE McBRIDE, 85, formerly of Milton-Freewater and a Weston Native, died Aug. 6, 1996 at a nursing facility in Redding, CA.
Funeral services were held in Redding Saturday with his son, the Rev. Dick McBride of North Valley Baptist Church officiating. A memorial service was held Tuesday at the First Christian Church of Milton-Freewater.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Milton-Freewater Christian Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
Mr. McBride was born March 8, 1911 in Weston to Tim and Ethel O'Harra Mc.bride. He attended a one-room grade school and graduated form Weston High School.
In 1934 he married Maxine Geiss in Milton-Freewater. His father and Chance Rogers were the first to grow green peas in this area.
He was a member and deacon at the Milton-Freewater First Christian Church. An avid coin collector, he and two other collectors had a million silver dollars displayed for six months in 1962 at the Seattle World's Fair. He also had a coin shop in Walla Walla.
Members of his family were pioneers to the area. Over the years, the couple owned and operated a livery stable and later a McBride automobile dealership and a cab business. He enjoyed participating in the Walla Walla Valley Ham Radio Club. The McBride's moved to Redding in November 1995.
Mr. McBride is survived by his wife at the home; two sons, Dick McBride of Redding and Steven McBride of Aliso Viejo, CA; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

REDDING, CALIF. - Weston native Maxine McBride, 92, died at Canyonwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on June 27, 2006.
A service was July 1 in Redding. Her son, the Rev. Dick McBride, and the Revs. Ryan Hollister of Millville Communtiy Baptist Church and Royal Blue officiated. Burial was in Lawncrest Memorial Park, Redding. Arrangements were through Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel, 9100 Deschutes Road, Palo Cedro, CA 96073-8716.

Mrs. McBride was born June 23, 1914, in Weston. She attended school there through eigth grade She and Lawrence McBride were married for 55 years, prior to his death in 2000. They lived for many years in Milton-Freewater, where she was an active member of First Christian Church. A homemaker, she loved gardening.
She moved to Redding in 1995 to be near family.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dick and Carolyn McBride of Redding and Steven McBride of Irvine, Calif.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

William "Gordon" Haun, age 79, passed on to be with the Lord, July 15, 2007 in Vancouver, WA. Gordon was born in Walla Walla, WA, April 13, 1928. Gordon was the oldest son of Albert "Tom" and Margaret Walden Haun. As a child Gordon grew up in the Walla Walla Valley attending schools in Milton-Freewater and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1946. Shortly after graduation Gordon joined the Navy in 1946 and attended cook and bakery school. He served on the USS Philippine Sea aircraft carrier as a meat cutter. The carrier went to the South Pole with the Admiral Bird expedition. After serving two years he returned to Walla Walla and married Yvonne Blackstone Haun September 5, 1949. During the early years of their marriage he worked in various agriculture related jobs. In 1968 the family moved to LaCenter, Wash. In 1969 Gordon became a shareholder owner in the Fort Vancouver Plywood Mill in Vancouver, WA. Working there until 1976 when they purchased a mom and pop custom meat shop at Dollars Corner in Battle Ground, WA, Gordon and his wife operated this business until their retirement in 1995. After retirement he was involved with his life long passion of auctioneering. He was a part of the Ridgefield Lyons Club Benefit auction for 25 years. Gordon was also the primary auctioneer for Bev Amundson estate auctions sales. He also formerly auctioned for the Three 9''s Estate Sales and Auction. Gordon restored and collected old farm equipment and wagons. He traveled the country collecting carnival glass. He attended the Brush Prairie Baptist Church. He was a past member of the Northwest Meat Processors Association and board of directors. He was honored when he was chosen to become a part of the Northwest Meat Processors Hall of Fame. Gordon is survived by his wife, Yvonne at their home in Battle Ground; daughter Linda (Allen) Harper of Oregon City, Ore.; son, Jerry (Dee) Haun of Walla Walla, Wash.; granddaughter, Carmen Vaughn and partner Andrea of Eugene, Ore.; grandson, Lance (Jennifer) Haun of Walla Walla, Wash.; granddaughter, Olivia Haun of Anchorage, AK; sister Shirley (Johnnie) of Issaquah, Wash.; sister-in-law Vada Rail of Vancouver, Wash. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers David and Keith. A celebration of life ceremony will be held at Brush Prairie Baptist Church, Friday, July 20th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Clark County Chaplaincy at 21609 NE 72 Ave, Battle Ground, Wash. 98604.
