The Grim Reaper claimed one of Chelan's early settlers Sunday afternoon, when W. P. Ridenour was stricken with apoplexy and succumbed before medical assistance could reach him.

The funeral was held from the Ridenour home in Chelan Tuesday, afternoon, the Rev. Francis Wrigley conducting the funeral service. The Ridenour residence was found inadequate to hold the large number of friends and relatives of the deceased who gathered there and the remains were taken out upon the lawn, where each one could hear the short, impressive and consoling sermon delivered by the Re. Mr. Wrigley. At the conclusion of the service at the house, the local lodge of Mason, of which Mr. Ridenour was a charter member, took charge of the funeral. Masonic burial rites being observed at the grave. The pallbearers were Ben Smith. L. W. Burnes, W. L. Hatch, George Brown, Sam Brown and Lloyd Pershall.

All of the Ridenour children were present at the funeral, Miss Amy Ridenour reaching here from Seattle Monday morning, a telegram informing her of her father's death early Sunday afternoon.

Besides his widow, Mr. Ridenour leaves five children: Mrs. Ray Dexter of Lakeside, Mrs. Lois Renn of Chelan Falls, May, Marion and DeLos of Chelan. Three brothers; Ensley in Bellingham, George in Auburn, John in Weston, Oregon; and four sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Michels of Auburn, Mrs. S. A. Barnes and Mrs. Wm. RIDENOUR, Emsley

RIDENOUR, W.P.

Emsley Ridenour, was born in Douglas County on November 27, 1892, and was the elder of two sons of Mr. an Mrs. Wm. Ridenour.

His parents move to Chelan a few years later and he received all his education in the Chelan schools. He was a diligent and painstaking student and graduated from the High School with the class lf 1910 with high standing. The following fall he entered the state university at Seattle and began a course in engineering. He spent two years at this institution and during the summer vacation intervening he was employed in a responsible position with the Lake Chelan Land Company on the Wapato project. In the university as in the High School and in al his associations he was popular with his comrades and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, one of the strongest and most popular social college fraternities in the country.

At the close of the school year in June 1912, he joined a party of surveyors who were going to Alaska to work on a big power development project in connection with the Treadwell mine. He spent several months there and had intended to remain longer, but returned to Chelan in December at the urgent request of President J. A. Van Slyke to accept a position in the Miners & Merchants bank. The offer of this position was indicative of the promise he gave of a successful and useful life – those who knew him best trusted him most and had the highest regard for his ability and integrity.

Emsley's death is the first bread in the Ridenour family, which until now contained eight members, the parents, four daughters and two sons. Those who remain to mourn the irreparable break in the family circle are the parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Wm. Ridenour, maddames C. R. Dexter an F. O. Renn and Misses Amy and Marion Ridenour, sisters and Delos Ridenour, a younger brother of the deceased.

Notes for SIMEON ADDER BARNES:

MILTON EAGLE - MAY 22, 1924

S.A. BARNES

Weston has the finest drinking fountain in Umatilla County, where the sparkling beverage of "Nature's own brewing" flows the year round for the exhilaration of the quiet inhabitants, and the thirsty pilgrim.. Weston also has tall men and good women, these who built early and well for the strength of this good commonwealth.

One of these tall in stature and in real manhood is briefly sketched here. S.A. Barnes first touched terra firma in Princeton, MO, Nov. 27, 1858. He came to Umatilla County when a mere child in 1863, remained till 1880. He then spent 18 years in Washington and returned to his favorite location, Weston. For the past twenty years Mr. Barnes has been representative for the Pacific Coast Elevator Co., and has conducted a general insurance business.

W.A. Barnes, his brother, lives at Weston, and is one of the prosperous wheat famers of that section.

Mr. Barnes married Miss Mary Ridenour, March 12, 1882.

They have the following children: Mrs. Anice Vaughn, Dorris E. Sidney, Athena OR; John R. in Waitsburg, WA; and Mrs. Namie B. Wilson, Portland OR.

Mr. Barnes has been an Oddfellow 40 years, and is a Mason. He has been Mayor of Weston, three terms, and city treasurer 12 years.

S. A. "Slim" Barnes, Weston pioneer, died Sunday at home. He had lived in Umatilla county more than 80 years.

Weston Pioneer Dies at Home

WESTON -- Simeon Aaron Barnes was born November 27, 1858, in Missouri and died December 2, 1945 at his home in Weston at the age of 87 years and 5 days.

Barnes was a member of one of Weston's earliest pioneer families. He was the oldest son of Aaron H. and Sarah E. Barnes. His father was a Union soldier of the Civil War, and died at St. Louis in 1861. His mother and her three small sons came west by ox team with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Killgore, arriving here in 1863. Killgore homesteaded a quarter section of land south of the present line of Main street in Weston.

Barnes spent his life in the Weston community, where he has been active in civic and fraternal affairs. At the time of his death he was city treasuerer of Weston; treasurer of Weston lodge No. 58. I.O.O.F., of which he had been a member 65 years; treasurer of Weston lodge No. 65, A.F. & A. M.; and treasurer of the Umatilla Pioneer association. He had previously served as councilman and mayor of Weston and was a member of the Rebekah and Eastern Star lodges.

In March of 1882 he married Miss Mary Ridenour. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive.

Barnes leaves to mourn his passing, his widow, two sons, Sydney, of California, and John of Athena, three daughters, Mrs. Anice Vaughn, of Seattle; Mrs. Doris Nicholas, of Mullan, Ida., and Mrs. Mamie Wilson of Portland, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One brother, Laurence Barnes of Chelan, also survives.

Funeral date has not been announced.

Biography of Albert Vaughan, 1902, Baker Co., Oregon: Surnames: Vaughan, Mc Carthy, Whitley, Ridenour.

Albert Vaughan

Mr. Vaughan was born at Elko, Nevada in 1877, his parents being Henry C. and

Lois (McCarthy) Vaughan. He remained with the remainder of the family in the

old parental home until his parents passed away, his business being mining.

After he began life's struggle on his own account he still continued to search

for mineral wealth. In 1897 in company with his brother, Jake. P., he

discovered what is now extensively known as the Irondyke mine. The two were

searching for iron used in fluxing in smelters, and while so engaged they

discovered a very rich copper mine, which they named the Irondyke,

commemorative of the search in which they were engaged at the time. They

retained the claim about six months, at the end of which time they had ten

thousand tons of ore in sight. They then bonded their mine for two years, the

consideration to be forty thousand dollars.

Immediately upon negotiating this sale our subject engaged in the cattle

business and in general farming, purchasing a quarter section of land two and

a half miles northeast of Pine post-office, but it is needless to state that

he is still interested in mining. He owns some promising claims at Sumpter and

Homestead.

In politics Mr. Vaughan is an active Democrat. He was married at Baker City on

February 18, 1900, the lady being Amy A., daughter of Emsley and Martha

(Whitley) Ridenour, natives respectively of Illinois and Oregon and residents

at present of Pine valley.
