EDWIN ALDEN ABBEY - A view of whose residence will be found in this volume, was born in Watertown, Jefferson county, New York, December 9, 1823, and in 1832, accompanied by his parents, located in Cleveland, Ohio. Here he resided until 1844, when he went South, being employed on the Mississippi river. In the month of September, 1846, he sailed from New Orleans to Mexico, being attached to the Quatermaster's department in the division of General Wood and Taylor.
Having served until near the close of the war, he accompanied Col. Collins to Chihuahua, with dispatches to General Price to evacuate that portion of the county, which duty being performed he rejoined the army on the line of march to Santa Fe, and was destined to accompany Company I, First Dragoons, as Wagon Master, and was thus engaged with that corps until 1851. Mr. Abbey now came overland, traveling as far as Fort Laramie with the famous Kit Carson, and arrived in Benton county in the fall of that year. He located his claim about four miles from what was then Marysville (now Corvallis), having for his nearest neighbor Elijah Liggett, and at once set to work farming. In 1856 Mr. Abbey, with Dr. T. J. Right and E. Hartless, made the pioneer journey to Yaquina Bay, the former's reason for the journey being one of simple pleasure and adventures; but with Dr. Right it was different as he was appointed Surgeon to the agency which had ten been recently established on the coast. There were no roads, and Phil Sheridan, then a Lieutenant, was having his men cut a trail over the mountains to lead them from reservation to civilization. Mr. Abbey, following the trails, mad Yaquina Bay about two miles from its mouth. At that time there was not a single resident in that part of Benton county. In 1862 he took up his residence in Corvallis, and there resided for about three years and then moved to Yaquina and located a large tract of land which he still owns near Elk City, twenty-two miles from Newport. Mr. Abbey has again taken up his residence in Corvallis.
Married in Benton county, Oregon, July 4, 1852, to Miss Mirinda Penland, who crossed the plans the prevous year, and has a surviving family of one son and one daughter, viz: Richard M. and Clara A.

THOS. MARLATT PASSES
Thomas Marlatt, one of the first settlers in the Heppner country, passed to his final reward at his home just east of the town on July 3, 1914, and his remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the Masonic cemetery on Sunday forenoon after a short service at the family residence, conducted by Rev. J. V. Crawford.
Mr. Marlatt suffered a stroke of epilepsy in March last, and at that time he came very near to death's [door. ? ?,] however, [?] had been an invalid ever since that time, suffering another severe stroke early last week which placed him beyond all human aid and he passed away on Friday with all the members of his family, save one daughter, at his bedside.
Mr. Marlatt was one of the pioneers of this section. He was born Nov. 8, 1837, near the town of Wilmington in the state of Illinois. He moved to near St. Joseph, Mo., in his childhood, and from there crossed the plains in 1852 by ox team, and settled in Marion county, near the town of Jefferson.
In 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Mecie Penland, a sister of the late William Penland, of Lexington. To them were born two children, a son and a daughter. The son died in infancy, and the daughter, Mrs. Laura Crabb, now lives at Cavadish, Idaho. His first wife died at the home on Hinton creek in 1870.
In 1887, April 17th, he was again married to Melissa Hart, and to this union five children were born, three daughters and two sons, all of whom are living in Heppner. He also leaves two brothers, these being J. W. Marlatt of Heppner and George Marlatt who resides in the Willamette valley.
Thomas Marlatt was a sterling pioneer. He came to this country when it was new and very sparsely settled, and with his brother Wesley engaged in the stock business, confining their efforts to cattle raising. He has seen the country grow up to its present state of development from its wild state and has been a participator in its making. In his business he was successful. He was of a quiet and unassuming nature, a good neighbor and kind husband and father, and leaves numerous friends who extend deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
One by one the familiar faces of the pioneer are passing from view and their ranks are rapidly thinning. They have made it possible for those left behind to enjoy the blessing of a splendid civilization which they have built. Hardships there were in abundance, and Mr. Marlatt had his share of these, but the end came to him in peace and he passes to a well earned reward.

E.B. Penland Dies at Halsey Home
Halsey, 16 Jan - E. B. Penland, 78, native of Oregon and prominent Halsey resident for nearly half a century, died at his home here Saturday, 13 January after an extended illness. He was buried at Pine Grove cemetery Tuesday afternoon following funeral services at 2 o'clock at the Halsey Methodist church.
Mr. Penland was born at Philomathe, (sic) Or, 9 September 1865. He moved to Halsey with his parents when he was five years old and had spent all of his life here excepting ten years. His parents were MR. And Mrs. Henry Penland, early Oregon pioneers.
Surviving are two children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Fred Robins of Halsey and Dr. Hugh Penland of Berkeley, Calif. A sister, Mrs. Fanny Fry, also lives at Halsey. Mrs. Penland died last November.

PENDLETON -- Funeral services for Lee Roy Penland, 66 who died Tuesday at his Helix farm will be at a local Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday.
He was a member of the Baptist church, Pendleton chapter No. 23, Royal Arch Masons, Nasburg lodge, No. 93, A.F. and A.M., Ionic chapter No. 102, O.E.S. and Pendleton commandery, No. 7, Knights Templar.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter Mrs. L. D. Sanders, Arlington, Va., his brothers Will Penland and Clarence Penland, both of Pendleton, along with nephews and nieces.

PENDLETON (Special) -- Services were held Tuesday for Will Penland, 78, who died at Community Hospital here Saturday after a prolonged illness. he was a life-long resident of Umatilla County.
Penland was born at Helix on Nov 3, 1888. He was a partner in the firm of Penland Brothers from 1907 until illness forced his retirement in 1963. He and Mrs. Penland celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary Nov. 6.
His wife survives, as does a daughter, Lavelle Penland of Pendleton.
