HISTORY OF UMATILLA & MORROW COUNTIES, OREGON - 1914 - Page 408

C. A. BARRETT

Among the representative business men and as one of the leading citizens of Umatilla County stands the man whose name initiates this paragraph and whose life of excellent achievement in the commercial realms of eastern Oregon has been worthy of emulation, while his unsullied reputation and intrinsic moral worth are quite commensurate therewith, having displayed characteristic uprightness and maintained a high honor throughout his long career in this county.

He was born in Oxford County, Maine, on June 21, 1852, to J. S. and Elizabeth M. Barrows, natives also of the Pine Tree state. His educational training was received in his native place except two years of service in the shoe shops of Massachusetts, following which, in 1872, he crossed the plains to California, then came to Weston, Umatilla County. Here he engaged for wages with John Adams in wool growing, and the horse business, continuing there until he acquired sufficients funds to embark in the same business for himself.

In the spring of 1883 he sold his sheep, retaining his horse business, and took up the hardware and inplement business, and to the successful prosecution of this he has devoted himself continouusly since, having at the present time a large and lucrative patronage, which is fully merited by his careful business methods and watchfulness for the interests of his customers and strict honesty in all his dealings.

In addition to his handsome Athena property he has 2,000 acres of land, half pasture and timber land and the balance farmed to wheat. He is also one of the incorporators of the First National Bank of Athena, in which town his business is carried on, and on the organization of this bank he was elected its first president, and held that office two terms and is at the present time director of the same.

He was one of the incorporators of the Athena Flouring Mill Company and has been either president or vice-president of the company since its inception, and is now one of the directors. Twice have the people called him to act as chief executive of his home city, and he has frequently served as councilman, ever bringing to bear the same wisdom and faithfulness that are characteristic of him in all his private operations.

He has also freely given his time and talent to the advancement of he interests of the schools of the town by acting as director. Fraternally he is associated with the W. of W., the K. of P. and the K.O.T.M.

November, 1877 the marriage of Mr. Barrett and Miss Jennie E. Mays was solemnized and to them have been born two children, Areta and Henry A., the latter being in the store with his father and holding the position of secretary of the company. Mr. Barrett is one of the most substantial business men of the entire section and has so demeaned himself that he has won and retains the confidence and esteem of the entire community.

Excerpts from the Valley Herald, May 28, 1993, by Helen Woodroofe.

He grandparents, Charles and Jennie Barrett, were married in Weston. They moved to Athena in 1877 and the family has been there ever since. Charles Barrett was a farmer and sheep man who also owned a hardware store in Athena, and he served in the Oregon Legislature for several years. Jennie Barrett was a founding member of the Athena Baptist Church in 1890 and she attended the first Pioneer Reunion in 1892, and in the early years sat on the platform at the Weston Picnic with other pioneers.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES.

CHARLES A. BARRETT. - There is no good reason why the people of Oregon should not be as state. They are a selection from the residents of communities from all parts of American, and even from Europe, possessing the culture and intelligence of their native regions with the super-added experience of Western life. And we think that the work of settlement and development done by our people would be no discredit to any in the world.

Mr. Barrett is from Maine, where he was born in 1852. After a few years in Massachusetts and also on the Pacific coast in California, he arrived in Umatilla county, Oregon, in 1872, - a young man full of courage and vigor. His life for six years was on Wild Horse creek in the employment of Mr. J.F. Adams. While there he helped drive overland to Cheyenne one of those bands of cattle which were so numerous in Oregon at that time. In 1880 he came to Centerville, and undertook the raising of sheep and the rearing of horses, retaining his sheep interest until quite recently. In 1883 he added to his other occupations the hardware and implement store of Kasson Smith, and is still operating in this line. His real estate is quite considerable, -farm of 160 acres near Weston; two hundred acres on Pine creek, ten miles north of Centerville; ad four residence and two business lots on Main street in Centerville. On one of these residence lots he has a dwelling-house costing five thousand dollars. This is one of the best in the county. The fire-proof brick building twenty-five by seventy feet in which he does business also belongs to him. This makes a thrifty showing for eight years' residence in the town.

Mrs. Barrett was formerly to Mr. Barrett occurred in Weston. Her marriage to Mr. Barrett occurred in 1877. They have two children, Arcta, the elder, and a boy, Henry.

One of the solid men financially, the man whose portrait looks from the opposite page is no less a substantial pillar of society in every interest calculated to benefit the community.

Nonagenarian Recalls Early Days in Athena

By Maxine Elder

ATHENA -- Local history and "Auntie B." are synonymous in Athena.

The affinity for family and friends, both old and young, has kept her alert to current events and happenings of a year ago, 50 years or 70 years, to say nothing of stories told or recorded by her mother of prior events. And her collection of photographs is outstanding.

"Auntie B." is Miss Areta Barrett who celebrated her 90th birthday July 24 and was honored at an open house Sunday hosted by her nieces, mrs Robin (Helen) Woodroofe, Mrs Leonard (Genevieve) Geissel, and Mrs. J. H. (Beverly) Tillman Jr.

The party was in the Fireside Room of First Baptist Church -- the church where her mother, the late Jennie Mays Barrett, was a charter member and where she has been a member since she was 14.

miss Barrett was born at Weston but her father, Charles A Barrett, moved his family to Athena in 1890. Areta and her brother, the late Henry A Barrett, attended Athena school. She was a member of the first graduating class-- six girls and one boy -- in 1897.

Attended Normal

Areta and Henry went to the Normal School at Weston, commuting by horse and cart. She laughingly recalled the day he dashed late to class in his overalls; he'd taken too long at the livery stable where he left the horse each day. Usually they took a bale of hay along for horse feed and a shovel was standard equipment during the winter months. Snow drifted into the hollow, present site of the vining station on the Athena-Weston highway.

After normal school she attended McMinnville College(later Linfield) where her mother had been one of the first students. It was a long journey -- by boat from Umatilla Landing to Portland, then on to McMinnville when Mrs. Barrett enrolled in 1875. By the time Areta matriculated there was rail transportation to the Willamette Valley.

After college Miss Barrett returned to the normal school at Weston where she substitued as voice teacher for a time. She was active in alumni affairs which included a reunion annually during the community's Pioneer Picnic. Final gathering was some six years ago.

Taught Piano

Miss Barrett taught piano for 20 years in Athena and greeted many of her former pupils at the Sunday party.

In her younger days she shared, with her brother, a love for horses and competed in races, mostly short distance events, she recalls. Her trophies included a silver cup, many ribbons and an Indian blanket.

Miss Barrett's home, where she has lived since 1937, is furnished with handsom antiques.

A "whatnot" shelf is one of the few pieces of furniture her parents had when they set up housekeeping. Wall shelves hold her collection of commemorative plates.

Her interest in history was probably inherited from her mother who kept a detailed journal and also had traced the family history back to the 1600s. A staunch Republican, she had been aghast to find that "Old Grover Cleveland," a Democratic president, was a relative!

Miss Barrett not only has a great store of family history, but many of third and fourth generation families have come to her seeking links in their past. Her recall of names, places and events is phenomenal.

Many Sent Greetings

She has long been a board member of the Athena Cemetery district and lamented that many early markers were destroyed thoughtlessly by some who were not concerned with records.

Birthday messages from throughout the Untied States, South America and Europe brought greetings to her. nearly 300 attended the open house, including out-of-towners Dr and Mrs P. G. Sigis, Portland, and Gen. Robert L. Scott Jr., Phoenix, Ariz. She had not seen Dr. Sigis since 1917.

Grandnephews Barrett, John and Andrew Tillman and grandniece Sally Geissel assisted with the guest book. Special greetings came from her other grandnephew, Dr. Michael Woodroofe, Ann Arbor, Mich. Assisting about the rooms were Mrs Dean Pinkerton, Mrs. John Adams, Mrs James Rice, Gretchen Geissel, Milton-Freewater; Alison Duncan, Melyn Schmidtgall, Alison Hansell, Jimmie Rice, Johnny Adams, and women of the Baptist Mission Soiety.

An Illustrated History Of North Idaho Embracing Nez Perces, Idaho, Latah, Kootenai, and Shoshone Counties, State Of Idaho, Western Historical Publishing Company, 1903

EVERETT G. DEARDORFF is a young man of promise and although he is not one of the earlier pioneers, still he comes to Idaho County with that capability and energy which will materially augment the building force and advancing spirit of the county. He was born in Callaway county, Missouri, on December 17, 1879, the son of James R. and Rebecca (King) Deardorff. The father was born in Ohio, on October 6, 1859, and is now a farmer, also operates a sawmill and a gristmill. The mother of our subject was born in Illinois, was bereft of her parents when an infant, and she died in i886. Our subject was a constant attendant on the common schools between the times of farm work up to 1897, then he went to Illinois, and was rejected when enlisting for the Spanish war on account of his youth. Returning home he remained until the spring of 1899 then wrought, on government work on the Mississippi and six months later went to Chillicothe normal school in Missouri, then returned to the government work, being foreman of the cutting crew. Later he served in the capacity of cook, then wrought in a glucose factory, then returned to the same normal school, after which he visited his home and on the third day of July, 1902, he came west, landing in Idaho county, where he went to work near Grangeville on a farm. He took the school examination and securing a certificate for teaching, chose his first school in the Redrock district, and on February 20, he finished successfully a five months' term. Three days later he began another term, at the Lamb school near Lowe and is fast making himself popular as a teacher. Mr. Deardorff has one brother, Urban, one half-brother, Earl, and one half-sister, Leota. Mr. Deardorff is a Democrat and active in the realm of political life. 'He has made application for a membership in the I. 0. 0. F. and is a popular young man.

Excerpt from Valley Herald, May 28, 1993 by Helen Woodroofe.

Woodroof's parents, Henry and Kathleen Barrett, courted after meeting while working at their fathers' rival hardware stores in Athena. The Barrett's had two other daughters, Beverly Tillman of Athena and the late Genevieve "Genny" Geissel. Henry was a farmer and sheep man, but later became the Athena postmaster with Kathleen as his assistant. Later, she became postmaster with Henry as her assistant until his retirement. Her tenure in the Post Office spanned 30 years.

Henry had also been president of the Weston Normal School Alumni Association and the Umatilla County Pioneer Reunion until his death in 1962.

Death Claims Athena Native

ATHENA -- Mrs Henry A Barrett, who died Friday night at her home here after an extended illness, was a lifelong resident of the community.

As Kathleen McEwen, she was the daughter of Mrs. Andrew B McEwen, now living in Portland, and the late A. B. McEwen, pioneers who early settled farming land in Umatilla County. She was born Nov. 11, 1888, on their farm near Athena.

September 13, 1912, she was married to Henry A Barrett, who survives.

Mrs Barrett had spent nearly all the past 30 years in the Athena postoffice, first as assistant and since 1937 as postmaster. She belonged to the Presbyterian Church at Pendleton, was a charter member of McKenzie Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and was active in civic and social work of the community.

The new McEwen High School of Athena was erected on land donated by her mother from the original McEwen farm.

Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Barrett leaves three daughters, Mrs Robin (Helen) Woodroofe, Mrs Leonard (Genevieve) Geissel and Mrs Jack (Beverly) Tillman, all of Athena; a brother, Ralph McEwen of Haines, Ore.; two sisters, Mrs William (Jessica) Jenkins of Riverside, Calif., and Mrs. Dallas (Thelma) Smith of Portland; and five grandchildren.

The funeral is tentatively set for 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Athena Baptist Church with the Rev Earle Cochran, pastor of the Pendleton Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev. M. B. Ketchem of the Athena Baptist Church, officiating.

‘Leonard Gas Station’ finally gets vacation

ATHENA – Leonard Geissel was the official bicycle repairman for at least three generations of Athena’s youngsters.

He could always be counted on to fix a flat bike tire or repair a broken bike.

And these services were offered by Geissel for free.

Last week, he ended that career when he locked the doors of the Athena Service Station for the last time.

Geissel, 68, retired after doing business on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Main Street for more than 37 years.

In addition to his avocation of repairing bicycles, Geissel, over the years, became the semiofficial crossing guard for many children on their way home from school.

Nearly every day, he could be seen taking time out from his business to help a kindergartener make it across Main Street.

He also acted as an arbitrator on many occasions for the area’s youngsters, and his telephone was always available just for the asking.

Geissel, Athena’s recipient of this year’s Man of the Year award, could always be counted on to buy raffle tickets or candy from area children.

Two year’s ago, a group of third-graders made Geissel birthday cards with "I love you" written on them.

One said, "Happy Birthday Leonard Gas Station".

On Geissel’s last day in business, he arrived at the station to find that the outside walls had been papered with drawings and notes from the children.

There was also a big sign which said, "Thanks for the Helping Hand"

In addition to the town’s children, Geissel is well liked by everyone he comes in contact with, according to his friends.

"He’s the only man in the world I know of who doesn’t have an enemy," says Athena lawyer Don Duncan.

His station became the unofficial meeting place for many of the area’s citizens, according to Duncan.

Geissel would always have a fresh supply of peanuts available on any day.

Farmers, lawyers, insurance men, hunters or fishermen could be seen with Geissel huddled around the station’s pot-bellied stove, hulling peanuts and exchanging commentary on the day’s current events, Duncan says.

"The whole town’s going to miss him," the lawyer says.

Geissel moved to Athena with his family 62 years ago.

Fifty of those years were spent working on Main Street. First at the drug store, then at the bank and finally the service station business.

Giessel says the only thing he is sure of about his retirement is that he won’t have to get up each morning and come down to the station to open it up.

He says he might take a vacation because he hasn’t had one in 14 years.
