2. JOHN KNOX2 KENNEDY (SAMUEL1) was born 29 May 1811 in Greene County, Tennessee, and died 26 Jun 1889 in Waitsburg, Walla Walla, Washington. He married (1) SARAH MCGUIRE STOTTS. She was born Abt. 1817 in Iowa. He married (2) SARAH STEELE 07 Oct 1830 in Greene County Tennessee. She was born 15 Feb 1815 in Kentucky, and died 18 Feb 1890.

John K. KENNEDY - Capt. of a Wagon Train which crossed the Oregon Trail in 1862.
The train left Fremont, Mahaska Co., Iowa on April 24th 1862. They were joined by others in Council Bluffs. June 8th the train had 88 men, 46 women, 86 children for a total of 220 people, 52 Wagons, 315 cattle & 38 horses and mules. More joined as they crossed the plains and it arrived in OR on Sep. 18 and then in Walla Walla Sept 27.
Mesac HALE married John K. KENNEDYS sister, Jane in Greene Co. TN. Jane and Mesack had one known son, William S and a dau. Harriet. They also came west, but we are not sure if it was with KENNEDY train. They settled in Linn Co., OR. Meshack and Jane also had a daughter neice Mary McCall who had married a Hiram Smith in MO and may have came west with the HALES as a Hiram Smith is found in the 1870 census near Jane and William McMeechen. Jane married a William McMicken/McMeechen in 1865 after Mesac died.

CAMP CREEK.
The name by which this creek was known to the Indians was Chaston, but it was given the name it now bears from the fact that on its banks camped a party of pioneers when in pursuit of some aboriginals that had stolen their horses. The stream rises in the foot-hills of the Cascade mountains and taking a northwesterly course empties itself into the McKenzie river seven miles east of Springfield. The valley through which it courses is about six miles long and one wide.
The first settler on Camp creek was Joseph McLean, who crossed the plains in 1850 and located on his present property in August, 1852. He was followed by George Marshall, who came from Ohio and took up the claim now owned by the Harbin family. Alexander Storms next settled on the McCabe place, while in 1853 arrived Revs. James Worth and J. M. Dick, to be followed shortly thereafter by William McMeeken and his nephews who located on a portion of the land where Joseph McLean resides. About the same time there arrived R. B. Martin, Mrs. Duff", M. L. Ritchey and D. N. Hyde.
The first school-house was built in 1854, it being a log cabin, which occupied the site of the present United Presbyterian Church. In 1872-3 the district was divided and two school-houses built, the church being erected in 1869.
The chief industries of the valley are farming and hop-growing, there being fifty acres of the latter within its confines

ROBERT KENNEDY. – It is a matter of gratification that we are enabled to incorporate in this compilation a review of the salient points in the career of Mr. Kennedy, who stands forth as one of the leading agriculturists and representative citizens of Walla Walla county, his fine farm being located two and one-half miles east of the city of Walla Walla. In tracing the lineage of Mr. Kennedy we find that he is a native of Indiana, having been born in Rush county, that state, in the year 1830. He was, however, but three years of age when his parents removed to the state of Illinois, where he grew to maturity under the invigorating discipline of the farm, receiving such educational advantages as were afforded by the common schools. He continued to be there identified with agricultural pursuits until 1852, when, at the age of twenty-two years, he determined to assume the responsibilities of life and to carve out an individual career, being fortified by due confidence in his powers and by an earnest desire to win a success worthy the name. In the year mentioned Mr. Kennedy secured an ox-team equipment and started on the long and weary journey across the plains and mountains to the Pacific Coast, his destination being the Willamette valley of Oregon, where he arrived after a tedious journey of six months’ duration. In this famed and beautiful valley he was engaged in farming pursuits until 1859, when he decided to locate in the even more attractive of Walla Walla, east of the Cascades. After arriving in Walla Walla he disposed of his property in Oregon. After looking about for a time he finally secured by preemption a claim of one hundred and sixty acres, upon which a part of the present city of Waitsburg is now located. This claim, however, Mr. Kennedy disposed of before he had perfected his title to the same, the land at the time having been unsurveyed. In the meanwhile he had taken a claim of one hundred and sixty acres on Dry creek, and after the surrounding land had been put on the market he purchased additional tracts contiguous to his original property and eventually became the owner of five hundred and forty acres, all in one body. He continued to engage in the cultivation and improvement of this place until 1881, when he sold the farm.
As early as the centennial year, 1876, however, he had bought a section of land two and one-half miles east of Walla Walla, and upon this place he located after disposing of his Dry creek ranch, and here he has since maintained his home, the ranch being recognized as one of the best in the favored section of the great state of Washington. The place is principally given up to the raising of the great staple product of this section, --wheat, --and bounteous harvests reward the well directed and indefatigable efforts of this representative husbandman. In addition to the homestead Mr. Kennedy owns a section of land near Lacrosse, Whitman county, and also one hundred and sixty acres of timber land in the mountains. In the year 1881 Mr. Kennedy built two store buildings in the city of Walla Walla, eventually disposing of these properties. He still owns two dwelling houses in the city. He is known as one of the substantial men of the county, enjoying the respect and confidence of the community by reason of his integrity and sterling worth of character. In the early days, when Indian depredations were frequent and lawlessness prevailed to a greater of less extent, Mr. Kennedy bore his part in the maintenance of law and order, being notably a participant in the Rogue river war.
In the year 1868, in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Kennedy to Miss Annie Smith, and they became the parents of three children, -- Edward A., who died May 31, 1900; Kate; and Lewis L. The death of Mrs. Kennedy occurred on the 11th of October 1877, and on the 10 of December, 1879, in Windsor, Illinois, our subject consummated a second union, being then married to Mrs. Margaret W. Dennison, a native of the Old Dominion state of Virginia. Of this union seven children have been born: Rebecca A., the wife of Richard E. Stafford; Martha B., Robert P., Edna E., William B., Benjamin H. and Edith M.

It is a valuable tract of land of nine hundred and twenty acres, all of which has been brought under a high state of cultivation and annually the great wheat .yi.eld returns to him a most gratifying income. Mr. Kennedy still gives supervslon to the work of the place although he has now passed the eighty-seventh milestone on life's journey. He was born In Rush county, Indiana, June 2o, 183o, a son of John and Margaret Kennedy, both of whom were natives of Tennessee. Removing northward to Indiana, they resided in that state for a to me and later became residents of Shelby county, Illinois, where both passed away.
Robert Kennedy started out in life on his own account when a youth of but fourteen years and in I85I, when twenty-one years of age, he crossed the plains to the Pacific coast, attracted by the opportunities of the great and growing west. He made his way to Oregon, where he settled on a farm and continued a resident of that place for eight years. In 1859 he arrived in Walla Walla county and settled on Dry creek, where he has since made his home. As the years have passed he has added to his possessions, his industry and determination bringing to him larger resources. His investments in farm property have made him t.he owner of rune hundred a.nd twenty acres of _valuable wheat land and upon his place are many substantial improvements. His farm presents a very neat and thrifty appearance and is supplied with all modern conveniences. Mr. Kennedy has been married twice.
He first wedded Miss Anna Smith and they became the parents of three children of whom only one is now living, L. L. Kennedy, a resident farmer of Oregon. The wife and mother passed away in 1876 and in 1879 Mr. Kennedy was again married, his second union being with Mrs. Margaret (Jackson) Dennason. Mrs Kennedy is a cousin of William Dennlson, who was governor of Ohio. To Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy have been born seven children: Rebecca, the deceased wife of Professor R. E. Stafford; Martha, the wife of John Connell; Robert P.; Edna; William B., B. H. ; and Edith May, who has passed away

In 1860, Alanson/Alfred came across the Oregon Trail on Horseback with 2 brothers, Hiram and Bradley. Bradley was shot by Indians outside of Idaho Falls while eating breakfast. (With an arrow in the back) Mary Elizabeth and Alanson/Alfred met in Baker, OR and were married there.

7. Nancy Ann Steen, the seventh child and third daughter of William G. and Naomi R. Steen, was born in Marion, Grant County, Ind., September 8, 1846, and brought by her parents to Salem, Ore., in 1852, where she was brought up. She was married in Salem, Ore., November 27, 1870 to Joseph Tate Halfpenny, he having been born in Ottawa, Canada, about 1840, and died in McMinnville, Ore., February 10, 1876. No children by this marriage. Nancy A. Steen Halfpenny was married a second time in Dayton, Columbia County, Washington Territory, April 25, 1880, to John Henry Kennedy, M.D., he having been born in Wapello County, Iowa, April 1, 1850, and graduated in medicine in 1871. To them were born three children at their residence, Dayton, Wash.:
I. Faith Goldie Kennedy, the eldest daughter of J. H. and Nancy A. Steen Kennedy, was born February 11, 1881.
II. Hope Ruby Kennedy, the second daughter of Dr. J. H. and Nancy A. Steen Kennedy, was born April 3, 1884.

An illustrated history of Spokane County, state of Washington page 695-696
W.T. HORR, president and treasurer of the Holland-Horr Mill Company, a pioneer of 1888, was born in Kansas, in 1862, and there the first twenty-four years of his life were passed. He followed lumbering during the lifetime of his father, then was engaged in farming for the remainder of his stay in Kansas. Upon coming to Spokane he re-entered the lumber business, serving as foreman in the yard of Mr. W. B. Turner, now principal of the Cheney Normal School, until 1890. In 1892 he and his two brothers, with Mr. T. H. Holland, formed the firm of Holland, Horr & Company which dealt extensively in sash, doors, lumber, etc., until 1897. In that year they bought out part of the stockholders of Spokane Sash, Door & Lumber Company and consolidated with that firm under the corporate name of Holland-Horr Mill Company. They manufacture all lkinds of mill work, sash, doors, moldings, etc., employing about sixty men, all skilled mechanics. They do considerable business outside of the city. The company has a saw-mill at Clayton, on the Spokane Falls & Northern Railroad, with a capacity of twenty thousand feet per day. Mr. Horr is one of the leading business men of this city, possessing an unusual degree of the shrewdness, sagacity and foresight which are characteristic of all men really successful in commercial pursuits. He is also one of the thoroughly reliable and substantial citizens of Spokane and though not ambitious for political preferment or leadership, possesses the confidence and respect of the people generally. Fraternally Mr. Horr is identified with Mr. Carleton Lodge, No. 107, I.O.O.F., with Unique Encampment, No 32, the Canton Patriarchs Militant. He is also a member of the I.O.F. He was married, in Spokane, in 1894, to Clara J. Ellis, and they have one son, Harry E.

John Connell of 1710 Plaza Way died in a local nursing home Wednesday morning after an extended illness. He was 85.
Connell was born in The Dalles, OR, on July 10, 1880. He came to Walla Walla in 1895 and was married to Martha Belle Kennedy in 1901. She died in 1949.
Connell is survived by a son and a daughter, Carl Connell and Mrs. James (Ellen) Conner, both of Seattle.
He was a member of Central Christian Church and Walla Walla Lodge No. 7, F. and A.M.
Funeral services will be a 3 pm, Friday at the Marshall Herring Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jasper Havens of Central Christian Church officiating. Private concluding services and interment will be in Mt. View Cemetery, Monday.

R. KENNEDY, PIONEER SON, DIES AT 82
Robert P. Kennedy Sr., 82, of Lincoln City, OR formerly of Walla Walla, died at a Portland hospital Monday after a short illness.
Kennedy was born Aug. 13, 1883 in Walla Walla. His parents were early settlers in this area. They were wheat farmers and their farm was where Gate No. 1 to the Airbase is now. They moved to Lincoln City last October.
Besides his wife, Kennedy is survived by four daughters, Mrs. George Norma Koll and Mrs. John R. Helen Wood of Walla Walla, Mrs. Eugene Carol Newbill of Dayton, and Miss Kathleen Kennedy of Portland; four sons, Robert P. Kennedy Jr., and James K. Kennedy, both of Walla Walla, Donald A. Kennedy of Haywood, CA;, and William E. Kennedy of Yakima. He is also survived by 34 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Edith Louis Eggers, and a son, Sgt. 1.C. Edward L. Kennedy, who was killed in Korea in 1951.
Requim high mass will be celebrated at 9 am Thursday in St. Patrick Catholic Church, of which he was a member, by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Hugo D. Pautler. Concluding services and interment will be in the Catholic Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 8 pm Wednesday in the Marshall (Herring) chapel.

There is an Opie R. Stafford who was born in Walla Walla, Washington, 07 aug 1901. He married Blanch Baldwin, and in 1930, they were living in Jackson County, Oregon, with a son Richard born in 1927. They later moved back to Walla Walla, Washington, where the local newspaper announced his birthday for several years in a row. On 06 Nov 1946, the local paper announced that Blanch had filed for divorce against Opie.

Mrs. James (Helen C.) Connor, 63, of Lincoln City OR, died there Tuesday.
Born June 22, 1907, in Walla Walla, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Connell. Mrs. Conner retired from the Social Security Administration in Seattle several years ago and in 1967 she and her husband moved to Lincoln City. Mrs. Connor was a member of the Congregational Church.
Besides her husband, James, at the home, she is survived by a son, James K. of Seattle; a brother Carl C. Connell of Seattle; three grandchildren and several cousins living in Walla Walla.
Services will be held at 10:30 am Friday at the Groseclose chapel with Dr. Edward V. Wright of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow at Mtn. View Cemetery.

Truck Driver Hurt in Crash
Fred E Eggers, 713 North Seventh, received minor injuries Tusday shortly after noon, when the Burbee candy truck he was driving collided with a gas truck driven by Richard Northrop, 1003 West Birch at the intersection of West Pine and Bowman.
Eggers was taken to St. Mary's hospital but was discharged after receiving first-aid treatment. Damage to the candy truck was estimated at $5oo, to the gas truck at $75.

Our dear Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother passed away peacefully on Friday, June 4, 1999 at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Grande Prairie at the age of 101 years.
Nettie Marie Bickell (nee Allison) was born in Ethel, Washington on December 23, 1897. She spent her early years in the Winlock, Chehalis, Lacamas and Aberdeen areas of Washington state where she attended school and began her teaching in 1917. In 1920 she and John Bickell were married. They moved to Debolt, Alberta in 1927 with their two oldest children. In 1941 they moved to Grande Prairie with their family of six children. They spent a busy life raising a large family in a pioneering area with involvement in farming, as well as the lumber and plywood business. Following retirement Nettie had the extra time to spend on her special hobbies of growing African violets and working on the family tree.
Nettie will be remembered by her children Roy (Noreen) and Bob (Jeannette) of Grande Prairie, Bill (Dona-Jean) of Camrose and Harvey (Carol) of Gabriola Island, B.C., son-in-law Clarence (Peggy) Anderson of St. Albert, grandchildren; Allan (Marilyn) Anderson, Glen (Diana) Anderson, Karen (Barry) Eamon, Wendy (Al Thisilton) Anderson, Carol (Jim) Mahoney, Judy (Aubrey) Brewster, Richard Bickell, Lynn (Dave) Feist, Gary Bickell, David (Rhonda) Bickell, Gordon (Liisa) Bickell, Marjorie (Ray) Kuntz, grandson-in-law Rod Ditch, great grandchildren Jody, Todd, Paul and Lindsay Anderson, Stephanie Eamon, Tara Mahoney, Jeffrey Brewster, Kirby, Hayley and Marina Ditch, Michael and Mathew Feist, Jay Bickell, Brent and Janelle Kuntz, numerous nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Marianne Allison.
Nettie was predeceased by her son Richard in 1945, daughter Charlotte in 1977, husband John in 1982, daughter-in-law Gaylia (Wetter) Bickell in 1991 and granddaughter Debra (Bickell) Ditch in 1996.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 1999 at 11 a.m.. from Oliver's Grande Prairie Funeral Chapel (10005-107 Ave.) Grande Prairie, Alberta with interment to follow in the Grande Prairie Cemetery.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Queen Elizabeth II hospital foundation.
