On 15 Dec 1804, a marriage bond was issued for Robert Banks and Susannah Jarvis in Norfolk, VA. Marriage bond reproduced on p. 55 of an unpublished booklet by Reginald and Lottie Smith of San Angelo, TX. The marriage bond says Robert Banks, but the family records say Thomas Baxter Banks.

In an 1898 letter of Thomas's daughter Margaret Green, she states that Thomas inherited slaves from his father, but gave them their freedom. (letter seems to be in the possession of Charles N. Edmonston, San Francisco, CA) She also states Thomas was drafted for the War of 1812 but hired a substitute who apparently died or was killed.

On 30 Mar 1818, Thomas Banks was granted land in section 34, Twp 2, Range 7 W while residing in Lauderdale Co., AL. (Old Huntsville Land Office Records and Military Warrants, 1810- 1854, by Marilyn D. Barefield, 1985) [his brother Simon Banks was granted land in same section]

"Thomas Robert Banks' grist and saw mill was located at a large spring a few miles northwest of Springdale, Arkansas.....In 1852, Thomas sold his mill and joined a wagon train of 102 wagons bound for Oregon Territory with his wife, Susannah, and two sons" (History of Washington County, Arkansas, 1989, by Shiloh Museum, article written by Dorothy Fitzgerald Allen, p 828-9) [Because of the recent date of this article, it cannot be ruled out that the author was influenced by the use of the Thomas Robert Banks combination by several authors.]

Jabez B. Banks,farmer, Benton County, Ark., was born in Alabama in 1825, and is a son of Thomas and Susannah (Jarvix) Banks, who were born July 12, 1784, and February 29, 1799, respectively. The former was a native of Virginia, and at an early day immigrated to Alabama, where he was married and resided until 1837, at which time he and his family moved to Arkansas. They were the parents of twelve children, who lived to be grown; Lydia, who became the wife of Daniel Perkins, a farmer and tanner, and died in Oregon; Verlinder, wife of Jesse Kincannon. a farmer residing in Wise County, Texas; Simon P., deceased; Reziah J., a farmer of Texas; Samuel A., deceased; Elizabeth, the wife of James S. Doggett, a Methodist minister residing in California; Tirzah, deceased: Hilkiah, a farmer of Oregon; Jabez B., farming on the old homestead; Susan Margaret, wife of Frederick Green, residing in Texas; Rhoda, residing in Texas and the wife of Lowry Davis; and Sebins, a farmer of Oregon. Jabez B. came to Arkansas at the age of twelve years, and after attaining man's estate was married to Sarah Sherrod, a native of Tennessee. The following are their children: Nancy E. (deceased), Benjamin F., Martha C. (deceased), David F., Thomas Arthur, Kilkiah Wesley (deceased), Susan Verlinda, wife of John McClusky; Margaret, wife of Wiley B. Johnson; George Lafayette and Henry Jordan (deceased). Mrs. Banks died in 1860, and in 1861 Mr. Banks married Elizabeth Gamble. and by her hecame the father of four children: Jabez Jefferson, Samuel Green, John Reziah and Sarah F. Mr. Banks is a Democrat in politics. and is the owner of 200 acres of valuable land, seventy-five acres being under cultivation. He is a Mason, and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

years. Her death resulted from paralysis. She leaves a husband, five

IDA E. FRENCH OF TALENT PASSES

Ida E. French, a resident of Talent for the past eight years, passed away

at her home in Talent Sunday afternoon. She was born near Roseburg, Ore.,

June 23, 1870. The family later moved to Athena, Ore., where in March,

1892, she was united in marriage to B. N. French. In 1910 they moved to

Phoenix, and have made their home in southern Oregon since that time. Mr.

French, a few years ago, preceded her in death.

Five children survive, three daughters and two sons: Laurence and Edward

French; Mrs. Fred Rapp of Talent, Mrs. Lawrence Crawford of Tule Lake,

Cal., and Mrs. Ray Coleman of Jacksonville; ten grandchildren, also two

brothers, W. P. Banks of Dayton, Wash., and Will Banks of Freewater, Ore.;

one sister, Naomi Dickinson of Milwaukie, Ore., besides many other

relatives and a host of friends.

She was a member of the Baptist church of Talent, also a member of the

Neighbors of Woodcraft of Phoenix.

Funeral services will be held from the Conger Funeral Parlors Wednesday at

2 p.m. Rev. Sige of Klamath Falls will have charge of services, and

interment will be made in the Phoenix cemetery.
