EDWARD EVERETT LUCE. In these days of corruption in high places it is pleasant to record the public service of Edward Everett Luce, now mayor of the city of John Day, Grant county Oregon. His record up to the present time has been unmarred by any suspicion of evil and his energies and activities have always been directed to the service of the people' without regard to personal ends. Aside from his political activities Mr. Luce is also prominent in commercial and agricultural circles of the county and in these directions is distinguished by the same honorable and upright qualities which mark his public life. He was born in Siskiyou county, California. November 22, 1860, and is a son of William and Maria D. (Fisher) Luce. His father was born in Kentucky, February 29, 1828. and his mother's birth occurred in Ohio on the 8th of February. 1836. William Luce joined the California gold seekers in 1849. making the journey by water around the horn. He returned by way of the Isthmus of Panama to Ohio and in 1853 he started on his wedding 'tour across the plains and mountains with ox teams. Mr. Luce and his wife located in Eugene, Oregon, where they remained but a short time. He removed hi* family, consisting of his wife and one child, to California, where he was active in various capacities until 1861. In the winter of 697 that year they returned to Oregon and eventually located that year they returned to Oregon and eventually located in Grant county. The trip from California to Oregon was made overland with wagons. In conjunction with his brother David Luce, and James Cozort, William Luce loaded a pack train with a large and varied line of goods and with sixty-two mules brought it to Canyon City.

Eventually they erected a wooden building and engaged in the general merchandise business until the spring of 1864, when they sold their interests to Captain Ferrin. William Luce then took up a preemption claim and engaged in farming and in the stock business, running sometimes as high as three hundred and fifty head of cattle at one time. For fourteen years he supplied Fort Harney with vegetables under contract. He was among the earliest of the pioneer settlers of Grant county and his wife was prominently identified with the development of the section.

When he brought his wife and family from The Dalles in 1863 there was no

wagon road in the section and in order to make the journey as comfortable as possible Mr. Luce packed one hundred pounds of flour on each side of a mule and placed across its back a large dry-goods box, in which he put his four children. From this primitive state of development William Luce saw the state of Oregon developed into a cultivated and civilized country. He was always active in its affairs and eager to

promote its welfare. He was a man who could never turn a deaf ear to those in need

and his hand was always outstretched to help a fellow traveler on life's journey. He

was a liberal, broad-minded and thoroughly generous man and his abounding and open handed charity prevented his amassing the large fortune which his opportunities warranted.

He was never an office seeker but served with much ability as county commissioner.

He died upon his holdings in Grant county. He and his wife were the parents

of seven children: Isabel, born March 6. 1854: Charles F.. born January 25, 1856;

Henry C., whose birth occurred September 24, 1857: Marion, who was born April 17,

1859; Edward E.. the subject of this review, who was born November 22. 1860; Carrie,

born October 20, 1862; and Alma, whose birth occurred August 2, 1864. ness. After his father's death he remained upon the homestead for about five years and has since been extensively engaged in the freighting business in this section of the country. He is one of the most prominent men in Grant county at the present time. He is actively interested in various movements and his intluence is always given to good and worthy causes, having for their object the welfare of John Day and of Grant county. He owns four acres of town property on which is located his pleasant, comfortable and hospitable home. He has two acres set out in apple and cherry trees and other varieties of fruit, which yield abundantly each year. He makes a specialty of his vegetable and truck garden and has been extremely successful along this line. Most of his personal attention is given to his freighting business, as its rapid growth and extension requires constant and energetic management. Besides his activities in these various lines Mr. Luce has had a distinguished career as a politician. He has served as a member of the city council of John Day, has done efficient work as marshal of this city and has made a record for ability and honesty during his term as deputy sheriff. In 1911 he was elected mayor of the city of John Day by a large majority and served for one term with conspicuous success. In 1912 he was reelected. He brings to his public life an intelligent grasp of current questions, of broad-minded tolerance and an incorruptible moral character. He regards his office merely as an opportunity to carry out the wishes of his constituents and has never used it to further his personal ambition. November 18, 1886, Mr. Luce was united in marriage in Grant county, Oregon, to Miss Julia J. Officer, of Clackamas county, this state, a daughter of Robert Officer, a native of Missouri. Mrs. Luce's grandfather was James Officer who left his native state of Tennessee for Oregon in 1845 and was among the early pioneer settlers of that state. The journey was made with ox teams across a wild and uncultivated country. The Indians, however, were peaceable in that year and made no disturbance. James Officer spent his first winter on the Columbia river twelve miles above Vancouver. He later located in Clackamas county, twelve miles from Oregon City, where he continued to reside until his death. In 1884, his son, Robert Officer, came to Grant county, where he is now living, engaged in the stock business, at the age of seventy-five years. Mr. Luce is one of the representative men of the state of Oregon. In his business life he is honorable and fair minded with a shrewd discrimination and a broad knowledge of men. In his political career he is a true public servant and regards personal honesty in office as no more than his duty to the commonwealth.

E.E. Luce Recalls The Early Days

First I will tell how Wm. Luce and wife, Maria E. Luce, and 5 children: Charles, Henry, E.E., and two sisters, Marian and Carrie who was a baby about 9 months old at that time, arrived in Grant County. The family wintered the winter of 1862-1863 in Eugene and father in Canyon City in the store. David Luce and James Cozart divided their time in the store and on the place where J.A. Laycock now lives, looking after the mules and other work. They built a log cabin just a little west of where the Laycock house now stands and also a small blacksmith shop for their own use. They wintered their mules out on the hills. Of course, they were herded of days and corraled at night. They had made one trip to The Dalles early in the spring and loaded light, and on the second trip, father came ahead of the pack train and brough his family to The Dalles. I don't remember the date we left The Dalles but we reached the place where Laycock now lives June 09, 1863.

We were packed in a good sized box and to make it even there was 100 pounds of flour on the other side. No one led this mule but it was turned loose with the rest of the mules. Some of the packers were Wells Stone, Henry Barker, Zack Vernoeinan, Joe Beckworth, John C. Luce, James Cozart, and father. The next trip Beckworth was killed by an Indian near the McKenna place. They stopped to fix a mule's pack and fell out over something. Both went for their pistols and both fired but Beckworth missed and he was shot through the breast. The Indian came on up and told us as near as he could what had happened and some of the men went back and brough Beckworth up to the cabin. He only lived a little while and was buried on the hill above the road almost where the line crosses between Laycock's and Penfield's place.

In the spring of 1864 several places were settled on. David Luce took up the place now owned by DeLore, Mrs. Belshaw, Wynn Allen, and John Silvers, and a part of the Begg ranch; Charles Belshaw where A.W. Dunn now lives; and John Herburger the place now owned by B.C. Trowbridge; and then father's place and Mr. Thompson, and Wm. Abrams on the place now owned by John Silvers. The first place taken farther down was the place now owned by Fletcher, taken by David Beech afterwards selling to Wm. Ingle. The road crossed the river there and crossed back again above where the Workins bridge now stands, and then crossed back again where Walt Carsner now lives. In case of high water they would follow through the hills all the way from the South Fork.

When you cross the river to where Mt. Vernon stands, some of the earliest settlers were John Adams, Wm. Bonham, Wm. McDonald, Joe Robertson, Wells Stone, James Clark; and across the river: Rileys, Thomas and Ryan, and then the Charles Wagner place where Vic Mosier now lives, and one of the oldest houses on the river. Harve Fields, James Cummings, and Widow Lathum, Aldrich, Casy, Officer, Bracketts, Snyder, Mack, and of course others. Among the early settlers were Murray Bros., Cap. Lewis, Perkins, Wood, Mascalls, Highland, Reeves, Jim Small, Vaughan, Grandpa Lester, Belshaw, Hayes, Dustin, Herburger, Bowsman, Frey, Jenkins, Penfield, and above John Day some of the first places taken were: Joel Howard, DeMoss Bros., Babcock, John Anglen, Hall Bros. and Wm. Settlemeier.

There were two men killed and Wm. Davis killed both of them, a man by the name of Wey that worked for David Luce, and McGill, and this is how the trouble came about. Davis ran a saloon and he and Wey were always good friends. Davis was a Democrat and Wey a Republican. A good many times Wey had run a little bill at Davis' saloon and so on Election Day, he did the same and never thought but what it would be alright, but when he went out by Mosier's blacksmith shop to get on his horse to go home, Davis came out and asked him for the money and Wey took it all in good part and said; "Why, Bill, I can't pay you today. I haven't any money with me, but I will pay you the first time I come to town."

Davis said: "If you don't pay it before you leave town, I will kill you" so trouble began to brew. Wey started to untie his horse and Davis pulled his gun and so did Wey but the horse jerked and Wey missed, so did Davis miss Wey the first shot, but he killed McGill and the second shot he struck Wey in the breast. He lived five days. I saw him every day as I was going to school in John Day at that time. Wm. Davis left that night and went to Winnemucca and was there for many years. Wey was taken to the home of Wm. Whit. Mrs. Whit was a half-breed but she had a good clean heart and was a good wife, mother and neighbor. Whit, some years later just as he was starting to Ft. Harney with grain, was killed. He was driving 10 horses and 2 wagons. In going down a little hill, he leaned forward to pull on the brake and lost his balance and fell off his horse and under the front wheels of the wagon, but by this time it was upgrade and as the brake was on, the wagon did not run over him, but his horse walked on his head and face mashing him up awful. He lived about 36 hours and died in father's house. They had three children. Lots of people will remember Bill Whit and of course quite a few remember the girls Helen and Eliza.

The Spanish spelling of Canyon City was used by the first miners on the creek. It was spelled Canon City. Tents first sprang up on Whiskey Flat. There was not room enough so the miners strung down the creek and lined up on one long narrow street, and this ran parallel with the creek. The street was a mere alley. There were about 12 saloons along the tinted alley and by fall 1,500 miners were washing gold from the gravel in the creek.

RICHARD DANBY has been prominently engaged in the stock business in Grant county for many years and is now known as one of the representative and enterprising citizens of his section. He formerly engaged in general ranching and in the raising of all kinds of high-grade stock but is now specializing in the breeding of mules. He was born on the Isle of Corfu in the Mediterranean, in November, 1860, and is a son of Richard and Jane (Sweeney) Danby. His father was one of the prominent military men of his time. He was born in England in 1822 and began his army service at the age of twenty when he enlisted in the First East Norfolk Battalion of the Ninth Regiment and entered upon the term of service which lasted for twenty-four years. He served as a color sergeant during the Indian mutiny of 1845 to 1846 and was also conspicuous for his bravery in the Crimean war of 1854-56. The last five years of his service were spent on the staff of the Household Militia. He received a number of medals for personal courage as well as other decorations for the efficiency of his military service. He was shot many times but his last years, which he spent in California, were marred by his sufferings from his old Crimean wounds. In recognition of his brave and conspicuous service an exception was made in the English laws and he received his pension from the British government during his residence in the United States. He died in 1896 at the age of seventy-four years. Richard Danby spent his boyhood days with the Ninth Regiment with which his father was identified and came to America with his parents. They located in Canada about 1869 but on account of the severe climate the father removed to California where Richard received his early education in the public schools. In 1888 he came to Oregon and located in the John Day valley where he engaged in stock-raising and general farming with much success. He is now located on the Luce homestead about two miles from John Day. His holdings are on the river and comprise five hundred acres of land which he uses principally as stock pastures and meadows.

At one time during his career he engaged in general stock-raising and ran from three hundred to five hundred head of graded cattle and horses. He has, however, abandoned the general field of activity and is now specializing in the raising of mules. He has an expert knowledge of the details of his business and is constantly adding to it. He thoroughly understands everything connected with the breeding and care of stock and his success is founded upon thorough efficiency and intelligent and constant labor. October 9, 1891, Mr. Danby was united in marriage to Miss Alma Luce, a daughter of William and Maria D. Luce. Mrs. Danby died May 10, 1910. Mr. Danby's ranch is now located on the old Luce homestead two miles from John Day and is one of the model stock farms of the district. Mr. Danby gives his political allegiance to the republican party but has never taken a very active part in public affairs. He belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows but beyond this connection has no fraternal affiliations. His career has always been upright and honorable and in his business activities he has always been dominated by the memory of the true and courageous life of his father and by the constant endeavor to live up to the high standard set him in his youth
