BY YEAR OF ARRIVAL IN OREGON:

1835 GAY, George Kirby

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ormultno/People/PNW/gay.htm

GEORGE K. GAY.--Mr. Gay was among the earliest of the pioneers of Oregon, having come to our state in 1835, in a party of eight, consisting, with himself, of Turner, Dr. Bailey, John Woodworth, Daniel Miller, Mr. Saunders, Big Tom," an Irishman, and an Indian woman, the wife of Turner. This was the company that was attacked one morning about breakfast time by Indians on the Rogue river, and who escaped only by the most desperate fighting and with the loss of two of their number, and of their forty-seven horses, the whole of their outfit, and all but two of their guns; while all were more or less seriously wounded. They were thereafter compelled to hide by day and to continue their journey by night, at length making their way into the Willamette valley in the most pitiable and destitute condition. At the head of the valley Gay parted from his fellows, and traveled hungry, wounded, and lacking clothing except a shirt, to Wyeth's trading post on Sauvie's Island. In 1836 he went with Captain Slocum to California for cattle, and on the way back fell into trouble once more with the Indians, receiving an Indian arrow the stone head of which he carried in his body for a number of years. He succeeded however in bringing his animals into the Willamette valley, and selected a claim and made a farm, or stock ranch, in what is now Yamhill county. He soon became one of the wealthiest men in Oregon outside of the Hudson s Bay Company. In 184344 he built the first brick house in the territory. He here dispensed a prodigal hospitality, entertaining all passers-by, and sometimes having under his roof-tree such distinguished visitors as Commodore Wilkes and party. It is mentioned as illustrative of his bounty and of the numbers of his guests that he often slaughtered all entire ox to be consumed in the repasts of a single day. Mr. Gay was in favor of good government, and was long known as a pillar in our young society. After the advent of the later immigrants and modern business methods, he lost his wealth and died in poverty October 7, 1882, at the age of seventy-two years.

He was an Englishman by birth, a native of Berkeley, in Gloucestershire. He went to sea as a lad, and arrived at Monterey, California, where he left his ship, in 1833, and joined Ewing Young, a trader from Santa Fe', and came north with him making at length his entrance into our state as above narrated.

GEORGE GAY

Born in Gloucestershire, England, in 1810; at the age of eleven years he was apprenticed as a sailor and followed the sea for twelve years, and in 1833 found himself at the port of Monterey, in California. Here he deserted his ship and joined Ewing Young in a trapping expedition northward. In 1835 he came overland to the Willamette Valley with John Turner, Dr. Bailey, and one or two others. The next year he returned to California again, to bring up a band of cattle, whose increase soon made him rich. He occupied a great and undefined tract of land in Yamhill and Polk counties. He died near Wheatland on October 7, 1882.

Note from Louise Gray FTW file

Was a Mountain Man who came to Oregon as early as 1810, according to one account, as camp boy for the Astor Party.

He built the first brick house west of the Rockies. Was one of the signers of the proclamation to make Oregon a state. Was an accomplished horseman and proud of his "pretty Indian wife and half breed children".

Annotation from St. Paul for George Kirby Gay 1796-1882

A plaque on a low boulder beside the road fronting his home site on the river near the old landing at Lincoln reads: "One fourth mile southeast lies the body of George Gay. Born 1796 in Gloucester, England. Died 1882. He built the first brick house west of the Rocky Mountains on his farm one fourth mile west of this spot. He was one of those patriots who, May 2, 1843, founded the Provisional Government at Champoeg." May, 1931. Gay was several times married, always to natives, "who were worth three white wives". He acquired considerable wealth from his cattle herds, but his boundless hospitality to all comers left him poor at his death. Numerous descendants remain today. A replica of his house, built from some of the original bricks which were burned on the farm, stands on the Newell House grounds at Champoeg.

Notes for JOHN KIRBY GAY:

John Gay 1846-

John was the eldest son of George Gay and his wife Louise St. Cleaire, or so she was called later---see St. Louis Record, January 27, 1879. As Gay's wife was invariably "Louise", but called Chehalis, Wallis (Worliss), Hare, and St. Claire, it is impossible to know whether this is all the same wife, or several. Apparently John and Marguerite Gervais, the mother of his children, had not been married in the Church, for in 1879 there is an entry in the St. Louis records of "Renewal of the consent of marriage, According to the rites of the Church. John Gay and Marguerite Gervais". Some time later they separate, Marguerite marrying Ulysses Loron.
