J. C. CAPLINGER, on of the first pioneers of Oregon, and a prominent settler of Marin county, was born in Hardy county, Virginia, on the banks of the Potomac, August 13, 1815. He was reared and educated in his native county, attending the common schools of that time, until he reached manhood’s estate. His father, George, was also a native of Virginia, and married Pollie Crider, native of Shepperd’s Town, Pennsylvania. The father and mother remained in Virginia until 1837, when they removed to Illinois, and there the father died, in 1839, at the age of sixty-five years. His wife survived him many years and lived to a great age. Both sides of the family were of German descent and their ancestors settled in Rockingham county, Virginia, in the early part of the eighteenth century.

Our subject was reared to farm life, and at the age of twenty-seven married Miss Jane Woodsides in 1841. She was born in Clinton county, Ohio, in 1823, and came to Illinois in 1837. Four years after their marriage the young couple had the courage to take the long and dangerous journey across the plains, in 1845, making the trip with ox teams. Their destination was Oregon, and after a long and perilous journey they reached the Cascade Mountains. They were one of the first white families that crossed by that route, and came near losing their lives by starvation, food being impossible to get in the wilds of the mountains. At last Mr. Caplinger left his family with two other families in camp in the Cascade Mountains, while he with others took their cattle over the mountain and returned with horses to cary over their families. Most of the horses perished in the mountains, and Mrs. Caplinger struggled on by herself, on foot, carrying her child. For four days she was entirely without food and at the mercy of wild animals, but her courage never forsook her and before her strength failed her Mr. Caplinger rejoined her with the much needed help. Mr. and Mrs. Caplinger selected Oregon City as their first location, as they entered Oregon City on the east of the Willamette, and remained there until 1847, when they removed to Marion county, settling near Salem, where he purchased land. So entirely has his home suited him that he has made it his residence ever since. Mr. Caplinger has resided continuously on one place for forty-five years, and at one time was the owner of 600 acres of land; he parted with different portions of it, until now he has but 300 acres, improved, within three miles of the capital. Although Mr. Caplinger is seventy-seven years of age, he bears his years in a wonderful manner, not looking to be over sixty. He attends to all his farm business and superintends as well as assists his one hand in all the work of his estate. During the Indian troubles his neighbors had him remain at home and relieve the necessities of the women and children, which he was able to do.

Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Caplinger, of whom six are yet living, namely: Henry C., Samuel R., John, Thomas, Ann, wife of William M. Scott; Mary, wife of James Mixon. These children are all prosperous farmers of Umatilla county, Oregon. Mr. Caplinger has always been a a man who scorned to wrong anyone, always trying to aid his neighbors and never seeing a want without trying to relieve it. He is a stanch Democrat.

ANNIE CAPLINGER

Annie Caplinger arrived in The Dalles in 1845 with the S.K. Barlow emigrant train. Their oxen were worn out on the trip and had to be abandoned at The Dalles along with their prairie schooner. They were able to get one old rund down horse on which they put some food, bedding and their two children and started out on foot via Hood River and Lost Lake, Bull Run and Sandy for Oregon City! The snow got too deep for the horse and its burden between Lost Lake and Bull Run river, so Annie had to carry one of the children through that early winter sleet and snow, over the mountain. Her husband carried the gun and led the horse and broke trail. Her husband worked ina sawmill at Oregon City for 2 years until the acquired enough money to start a home on a Donation Land claim at Salme where they have lived for more than 50 years!

This story by Fred Lockley in the Oregon Journal showed that not all the emigrants went down the Columbi river on rafts(1945) nor did they follow Barlow over his trail. Some at least followed the Lee Cattle or Indian Trail over the mountain to the Willamette valley. They must have did so much walking across the plains that the mountains and the snow didn’t look too tough.

tions of early pioneer life and twice an the year 1878 was forced to leave Helix on account of the hostility of the Indians and seek refuge an Fort Walla Walla. However, he persevered and his determination and energy overcame the obstacles in the path of material advancement, while changing conditions, brought about by the settlement of the country, soon obviated the necessity of protecting against Indian attack. In 19o5, after many years successfully devoted to farming, he retired from active agricultural life and removed to Walla Walla, where he remained until called to his final home, on January I8, 1915 .

Mr. Scott was united n marriage to Miss Anna D. Caplinger, a daughter of Jacob and Jane (Woodside) Caplinger, of Salem, Oregon. They crossed the plains from Fulton county, Illinois, to Oregon an 1845 and settled in Oregon City but after two years removed to Marion county, that state, taking up their abode on the prairie four miles east of Salem, where they remained until called to their final rest. The father died on the 2oth of June, 19o4, and the mother survived only until the 26th of July of the same year. In 1845, on their journey across the plains, which was made by way of the Mount Hood route, they were there snowbound for more than three weeks with no food but coffee for several

days.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott became the parents of nine children, namely Mary L., who is the wife of J. M. Richardson, of R, salia; Emma J., who gave her hand in marriage to Dr E. A. Mann, of Portland, Oregon; John A.., who resides in Lacrosse, Washington; Ira C., who operates the home farm for his mother, now residing in Walla Walla; Ray W., who passed away in i9o2 , when sixteen years of age; and Alexander, Charles, Walter and Bertha, who are also deceased.

In his political views Mr Scott was a stalwart democrat and in 189o he was a candidate for county judge of Umatilla county. His life was that of a consistent Christian and for more than twenty years he was an elder in the Church of Christ at Helix. He was also a public-spirited citizen and a factor in the advancement of the county's welfare and interests along many lines. Death called him January 18, 1915. A modern philosopher has said: "Not the good that comes to us, but the good that comes to the world through us, is the measure of our success", and judged by that standard Mr. Scott was a most successful man, for he went about doing good, extending a helping hand to the poor and needy, assisting in the work of general improvement and shedding around him

much of life's sunshine. His widow now occupies a beautiful home on South Division street in Walla Walla. She, too, as a member of the Church of Christ and gives liberally to its support and in charitable work, her benevolences being many.

CEREMONIES ON SAME DAY TAKE POPULAR TEACHERS FROM LOCAL SCHOOLS

Caplinger--Domrese

A quiet wedding occured at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Caplinger on Second street at 10 o'clock Sunday morning, when their daughter, Lena M. Capllinger, became the bride of Louis E. Domrese, a prosperous farmer of the Palouse. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. P. Ames in the presence of the immediate relatives.

The bride was attired in a beautiful gown of cream silk, crepe de chine and chiffon and carried a boquet of bride's roses. She was attended by Miss Lillian Domrese, attired in Belgian blue crepe de chinne. The bridegroom was attended by Neil Caplinger.

After a sumptuous wedding breakfast the happy couple departed for their comfortable home 10 miles south of Cheney, attended by the congratulations and best wishes of their many friends.

The bride is a graduate of the Cheney State Normal school and has taught for the last year in the public schools of this city.

Lou Green

Spokane

Memorial service for Lou Green, 79, will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Green, who was born in Spokane, died July 18.

She graduated from Davenport (Wash.) High School and in 1953 moved back to Spokane.

She was a volunteer and director of the Spokane Air Defense Filter Center. She also was a bus driver for the Cheney School District and a delivery person for the Hart and Dilatush Pharmacy.

Mrs. Green was a member of the Spokane Yacht Club.

Her husband of 54 years, Cecil, died in 1991.
