SAAC LEONIDAS2 BRYSON (MATTHEW M1) was born 22 Nov 1844 in Wapello, Iowa, and died 14 Feb 1925 in Garfield, Whitman, Washington. He married HARRIET E DARLAND 20 Sep 1867 in Marion, Oregon, daughter of SAMUEL DARLAND and SUSANNAH HUTTON. She was born 08 Mar 1851 in Warren Co., Illinois, and died 11 Jan 1938 in Whitman, Washington.Notes for I
SAAC LEONIDAS BRYSON:http://genforum.genealogy.com/bryson/messages/1039.html
The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, Washington, December 4, 1921.
Isaac L. Bryson
The only one of the first officers of Whitman county still living is Isaac L. Bryson of Garfield. He and Mrs. Bryson, in their comfortable home on an acre tract at the edge of town, are true types of the pioneers who built the Inland Empire. The story of their coming to the west--across the plains to Oregon when children, and to the Palouse country in the vigor of their young manhood and womanhook, is like the story of many of their neighbors of the days now passing in history.
Mr. Bryson crossed the plains as a boy, when in 1851 his father emigrated to Linn county, Oregon, where he took a claim and followed his trade of carpenter, building many houses in Albany and other neighboring towns. Mrs. Bryson came with her parents from Iowa in 1865, when 14 years old. Her Father, S. R. Darland, with his family of 10 children, had an outfit consisting of a spring wagon and two horses, another wagon with a four-horse team and another with a four-mule team. A heavy wagon drawn by five yoke of oxen carried a cook stove and camp equipage.
When they crossed teh Missouri at Council Bluffs their train had increased to 60 wagons, and when at Fort Laramie it had 300 wagons under a guide, Captain Weyman. At Fort Laramie the party was held while its personnel was investigated for possible deserters--the Civil war was just over. Here also there was a disagreement as to the best route for the westward pilgrimage.
The party was divided, the smaller number, in which Mrs. Bryson's father was included, taking the southern route, while Captain Weyman's party took the northern and what proved to be the better way, reaching Oregon several weeks ahead of the other. Indians were encontered in Utah by the Darland party, one man was killed, a boy struck by a poisened spear died in agony after several days, and a large number of the horses were stolen. Mrs. Bryson saw the man after he had been scalped and says it was hard for her to overcome her fear of Indians ever afterward.
Snow was falling when they crossed the Cascades in October, and sleeping without shelter, the faces of the travelers would be covered with snow. She can never forget the arrival at Sublimity, Oregon, in Marion county, and the welcome of her uncle, Ben Hutton, and her mother's brother, who had preceded them to the land of the setting sun. This Ben Hutton was also an uncle of L. W. Hutton of Spokane, ahe and Mrs. Bryson being cousins.
Here in the primitive surroundings of the pioneer Oregon settlements the boy and girl grew up, and when they in turn were married and ready to make a home for themselves and the children who had come to them, and like their parents they decided to cast their lot with the tide of immigration just turning toward the Palouse country. With their two little children they took the boat for The Dalles, shipping their stock on the same boat.
Their equipment for starting life in the new country consisted of 32 head of cows and calves, six horses, wagons, ect. At The Dalles they started overland, traveling with the Gilliland and Fisher families, and Mr. and Mrs. Pettigo, parents of Mrs. Gilliland and Mrs. Fisher.
On July 29, 1871, the party arrived at a point on the Palouse river eight miles above Colfax, now called Glenwood, and there they decided to locate, all taking claims on the river and proceeding to make for themselves homes. They chose the river bottom as providing hay for the stock and timber for building and fuel--no thought of farming in those day--all settlers came with the idea of making a stake by raising stock. For three months the Brysons lived in a tent, while Mr. Bryson and a man who had come with them cut and hewed logs for a cabin, and here, on August 26, their third child, Eva Alice, was born. No one but the mother and father were there when the little one, the first white child in what was to be Whitman county, was born. The man helping with the work in the timber had been hastily sent to bring the women who were neighbors, but when they came the new born babe had been bathed and dressed by the father.
The cabin was finished, the big rough fireplace built, and Mr. Bryson, scorning the customary dirt floor of the settler's cabin, procured from Colfax the first flooring (undressed0 turned out by the mill just started by Hollingsworth & Perkins, put a real floor in his cabin and before winter storms were upon them the fires burned brightly on the pioneer hearth and the little family was comfortable and happy.
Mrs. Bryson tells how a neighbor, making a home at the same time, but probably of less sturdy stock, appeared at the cabin one day when winter was upon them, leading a rawboned horse which carried his wife and two little children. "We are starved out and frozen out," he said, and the family was welcomed to the Bryson cabin, where they stayed several days.
They were loaned the Bryson tent to supplement the poor shelter of their shack, which was made more secure, and they were encouraged to greater effort by the thrift and hardiness of their kindly neighbors. This was the sort of service rendered by the pioneeers, who, "made of sterner stuff" than others, were the very pillars in the structure of the new commonwealth.
When the new county was organized and Mr. Bryson became its first treasurer Mrs. Bryson had anxious days when she had the county funds concealed in her flour barrel, for the office of the treasurer was wherever he happened to be. He arranged to spend several days at a time in Colfax, the county seat, so that the scattered stock men of the county could come to him to pay their taxes.
He made his headquarters at the Belcher store and with Captain Ewart, the newly appointed auditor. Later, when teh Bryson hogs fattened along the fertile river bottom, the treasurer took fresh pork and sausage to town as payment for his board with his friend Ewart.
"It was a wonderful place to raise hogs, along the river," agree the pioneers, and it is easy to picture the luxuriance of the vegetation at Glenwood in its primeval state, for the wonderful springs there have been turned into pipes and furnish the fine water supply of Colfax. The spot is one of the favorite picnic grounds for Colfax people, and on summer days automobiles are parked in the shady spots along the river where once the Bryson cattle and hogs waxed fat.
O. V. Bryson, eldest son of these pioneers, now farms a part of the original preemption claim which his father took in 1871.

ILLIAM LAFAYETTE MUNCEY:Tri City Herald (Pasco, Washington) > 1958 > December > 12, page 56
Richland Transfer and Storage Co. Was founded in 1906 in what is now a park across from the Desert Inn by the late W. L. Muncey, whose wife, and son, L. G. (Buzz) Muncey still reside at 208 W. Deschutes Ave., Kennewick.
...
Muncey who was also an early realtor in Kennewick, built several Richland homes between 1905-'10, including one now occupied by the Columbia Service Agency. In 1907 he built a livery barn. Other Pioneer Richland homes, including the old John Dam, Vic Nelson and Ed Peddicord homes, were part of the scene.
The transfer company was sold in 1909 by Muncey to Eskelson and Anshutes, two partners, who resold in 1915 to John O. Maupin. He had 14 teams (28 horses) on the line a year later when a Dr. Davidson bought the firm and introduced the first gasoline-powered truck. Muncey repurchased the firm in 1917 and a year later completely motorized the operation, selling it in 1924 to r. R. (Mac) MacIntosh.
