--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SIDNEY S. BENTON. - This pioneer of Illinois, California and Washington is one of those facile, multiplex characters that give to our Western life its buoyancy. He was born in the first-named State in 1838, while Chicago was yet in her swamps, and his father was at that city in 1831, when it was a mere Indian trading post, and also at Galena, the home of the Grants, in1832. His father came out to California with ox-teams amid Indians, and over the usual sage-brush plains, and the iron-stone rocks in 1849. He mined on Feather river in Yuba county, and in 1852 went to Siskiyou county, where he followed mining and merchandising. Sidney arrived in 1856 via Panama at Yreka, and mined near that city and in Scott's valley until 1861. In that year he went to Nevada, working on the Comstock; for six years he was underground foreman of the Savage mine, making money and losing it.

In Siskiyou county and Surprise valley, and at Dixon in Solano county, California, he engaged again in business. At the latter place, in1863, he met an old acquaintance from Wisconsin, Miss Mattie E. Bowmer. She and her brother had come the year before from the East in the company which had been attacked on the Upper Snake river by Indians, who killed twenty-eight of the party. Some fifteen years after his marriage to this lady, Mr. Benton came to Walla Walla with his wife, where he began stock-raising. He has prospered greatly, picking up interests at various points throughout the territory. At Farmington he, with a partner, owns twenty-two acres of land, which have been plotted and added to the town. It forms an addition which has been named Grover, after ex-President Cleveland, and lies on the Idaho side of the territorial boundary, which runs next the city. Farmington, being the first agricultural region reached from the mines, is sure to prosper. At Medical Lake Mr. Benton owns a portion of the townsite, and also has city property in Tacoma. His first venture in the Coeur d'Alene mines ended in a disastrous

snow blockade at the place where Wardner now stands, but he now has valuable claims at Carbonate Center. He is anchored to real estate at Colfax also.

Mr. Benton's life on this coast has been peaceful with the exception of a campaign and skirmish during the Modoc war while he was deputy assessor. He is living now at Colfax with his wife and son, advancing the interests of the city and state to the best of his somewhat rare ability.

Illustrated History of Oregon

Harry L. Bowmer one of Umatilla County most enterprising and popular newspaper men was born in Amador, California March 4, 1858. His father Judge J.C. Bowmer was born in Kentucky, studied law and was admitted to the bar at age 21. In 1849 he went to California where he was married to Miss Lorena Hayes, a niece of ex-President Hayes. Mrs. Bowmer died in 1860 leaving one child the subject of this sketch who was then only 2 years old. Four years after the death of his wife, Judge Bowmer moved to Nevada and our subject attended the common schools of Nevada, afterwhich he learned the printer trade which he has followed successfully for many years graduating from the case and rising step by step until he has been chosen at different times to fill the editorial chair in leading papers of the coast. In 1881, he went to Colifax, Washngton where he purchased a paper called the Colifax V dette started by Hon. E.N. Sweet and J.W. Doolittle. He remained on that paper for two years then sold out and was given the management of the Walla-Walla Statesman, which he held for three years and then bought the Pomeroy Times. This paper he also disposed of after managing it for some time and accepted a position on the Oregonian at Portland where he continued 17 months and then went back to Walla-Walla and accepted the editorial chair of the Statesman, continued there until he bought the Milton Eagle.

In the fall of 1890, he was induced by the Republicans of Umatilla County to go to Pendleton and take charge of the Pendleton Tribune and conduct it through the fall campaign of 1890. As soon as the campaign was over, he bought the Weston Leader took charge of it and has built it up until it is second to no other paper in the county.

Our subject was married November 1879 to Miss Minne M. Mann of Reno, Nevada who has borne him two children namely Charles, a bright little fellow of 12, and Lorena a charming little maiden of 5. Mr. Bowmer is a member of K of P and is treasurer of the Lodge. As is needless to say, our subject is a strong Republican in politics and is a man respected for his intellectuality and many sterling traits of character.

Southern Oregon Normal School teacher Angus L. Bowmer founded the festival in 1935 after raising money for its first season from the city and the state. Bowmer worked with students from the normal school, a teacher-training college, and community members to make an Elizabethan-style theater out of the remnants of a building once used for Chautauqua — summer educational events popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that featured music, drama, and lectures.

In 1935, the company performed two plays written by 16th-century playwright William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice. Since then, the festival has grown to include the works of a variety of playwrights shown in several different venues in Ashland. The festival incorporated in 1937 and was temporarily closed during World War II. Over the years, the outdoor Elizabethan stage and seating have been remodeled several times, and during the 1970s the company added several indoor theaters. Bowmer retired in 1970, and died in 1979.

Today, people travel to Ashland from around the nation, and world, to attend performances by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
