Powell Family Bible Pages:

"The copy of the Bible pages are from Grandma Blackwell's Bible and I have the original leaves. Old Bibles are now one of the best proofs." - Written to my dad by his first cousin, Roseanne Powell.

Grandma Blackwell is my great-great grandmother, Mary Catherine Powell Whitsitt Blackwell (1846-1934). The bible's first records were written down by HER grandmother Esther Beeler Powell (1795-1853), who was married to John Powell (1793-1857), the son of Joseph Powell (1760-1835) and Hannah Jewson/Juson (?-1845), and probably continued by Mary Catherine's mother, Rachel Beeler Powell.

I have typed all entries exactly as they appear on the bible pages. There are 5 pages in all - I have no idea in what order they originally were:

Oregon Pioneer Biographies

Rev. Joab Powell

Joab Powell was born July 16, 1799 in Claiborne Co., Tennessee, the fourth child of Joseph and Hannah Jewson Powell. Joseph was of Welsh descent, and was known as "The Fighting Quaker." The original name was Ap'howell, but it quickly was shortened to Powell. Joab began to preach at age 24 and moved to a homestead near Independence, MO in 1830. He preached in Missouri for 20 years, and worked a 640 acre farm at the same time. In 1852 he came to Oregon and settled a claim at the Forks of the Santiam in Linn County, between what later became the Providence Baptist Church, and Crabtree Creek.

Although he could barely read and write, Joab was a powerful preacher and had a keen mind which enabled him to memorize most of the bible and hymns he sang. He was a powerful man, weighing nearly 300 pounds, and had a strong voice. He preached to all who would listen and was famous for riding the circuit throughout Linn County. Joab was one of the originators of the Providence Baptist Church, located midway between Scio and Lacomb. This congregation decided to form on April 9, 1853, and Rev. J. G. Berkley was appointed as minister. He served for four years, after which Joab Powell preached for the next five years. The first church was built during 1856-57, and a second building was completed in 1898. Services are still held in this church, and a monument to Joab and nineteen charter members of the congregation is visible at the entrance to the church and cemetery grounds.

He married when 19 to a German girl who spoke only a few words of English; Anna Beeler. Anna was born 17 May, 1797 in Grainger County, Tennessee, and died 31 May 1872 near Providence Church, Linn County. Joab died January 25, 1873.

JOAB AND JOHN POWELL

The Powells began in Oregon with JOAB who came by wagon train from Missouri in 1852. He and his bride, ANNA, and their children settled near Scio.

He left a wide mark throught the history of early Oregon as he traveled the territory preaching against sin and baptizing some 3,000 persons in the nearest creek. This famous pioneer traveled by horseback in three Pacific coast states. ELDER JOAB was a sociable person. Many of the neighbors of the Powell's came from Jackson County, Missouri also. It was in his oak grove that these friends, original 19 members of the Providence Church, met to organize the Providence Baptist Church on April 9, 1853.

JOAB and family settled at the Forks of the Santiam River where he lived until his death in 1872. MOTHER POWELL, as his wife ANNA , was know, seemed to never tire. She took care of her large family and tended the farm with the help of the chilren while ELDER POWELL went about the business of the Lord wherever he found a need. The little woman was a source of power to her big husband who came home drained of confidence. She would build his self confidence and send him out again. ANNA died in 1872. No one ever saw him smile again. He died soon after her. They are both buried in Providence Cemetary.

JOHN POWELL, the son of JOAB, and wife, EMILY, and family came to Crook County in the fall of 1870. They located on the 20th day of November in the Powell Butte area, which bears his name. He and his family helped to settle and stabilize the Crook County area around Prineville. JOHN and EMILY are both buried in the old Juniper Haven Cemetary

This branch of the Mulkey's did not go to Benton County, as the father Thomas died as they down into Oregon City. Sarah spent the first winter in Milwaukie, and then moved to Yamhill County. Most of the family stayed there. America Jane, the daughter was married to Joab Powell Beeler and later to Thomas Merchant. She married Joab in Yamhill County, and they lived part of their lives in Polk County, but never Benton County. The America that married Odeneal was a daughter of Johnson--I have a copy of his probate which shows her as his daughter. America Jane Mulkey Beeler Merchant was my gg grandmother and I have done extensive research on her. I have court records, land records, obituary, cemetery records, etc. Would be glad to share what I do have on her. Sarah Carpenter Mulkey, wife of Thomas Mulkey married 2nd to Robert James Lancefield, and died in 1856, buried in Amity Cemetery, Yamhill County. Thanks!

It took quite a bit of research to find America Jane Mulkey after she and Joab Beeler divorced back in 1875/1876. They were divorced, remarried and then divorced again. But I finally succeeded in that a few years ago. She is buried in Tulare County, where she finally settled after her second husband died. She, one daughter, and one grandson are buried there. Then the rest of the family went on to Santa Cruz, California where most of them are buried. I connected with the last of that branch in the early 1980's.

Two of the wives shared much information and pictures with me before they died. So I was very fortunate to find them! She and Joab Beeler had 5 children that lived, and I descend from their oldest, George M. Beeler, who is buried here in Salem at the Pioneer Cemetery on Commercial Street.
