Dave Woodward and Mysteries in the Mt. Emily Area, Union County, Oregon
That great territory between Summerville and Walla Walla on the other side of the Blue Mountains has long been and is to this day a dark and foreboding region. Much of it yet remains unexplored and many are the tales to it. A few disappearances of individuals are here related as typical examples
On 30 January 1896 Dave Woodward who operated a toll road between the Grande Ronde and Walla Walla valleys left Elgin with a sled load of provisions which he planned to take to his summer home at Toll Gate. During the winter time the Woodward family lived either at Elgin or at Milton. Just why Woodward was intent on making the journey in the dead of winter is not known. Friends in Elgin, fearing for his safety attempted to dissuade him from the trip, but he persisted in going and after having passed from their sight nothing more was ever seen of him. Posses who entered the hills in search of him found his broken snow shoes near Spout Springs but no trace of his sled, axe, shovel or any of the canned provisions he took with him have ever been found. Woodward might have been overcome by the storm and devoured by predatory animals, but it would appear that some of the iron implements might have been found no trace of them was ever reported It is a mystery which probably never will he solved.
Ten years later in July of 1906 a family named Brittain from Walla Walla were camped near Toll Gate. While the mother was preparing supper, their small son, Cecil, was playing around the camp fire. Ten minutes later it was noticed that he had disappeared. and no trace of him was ever found. Posses scoured the area thoroughly and for years following every effort was made to follow any clue but without success. He has remained lost as completely as if the earth had swallowed him.
On the Summerville side at least two children have disappeared without trace. In the late 1870's Alma Miller a six year old girl disappeared from her home on the mountain and was never seen again. Old timers have long felt that she was picked up by gypsies but there was never any real basis for this theory, As late as 1941, Raymond Dowd, a two and a half year old boy, wandered from his home five miles northwest of Summerville and despite a concentrated search in which hundreds participated, no trace was ever found

Human Bones Found
Thought to Be Those of Dave Woodward Lost in the Blue Mountains 7 Years Ago
Wednesday of this week Baily Shelton and Geo. Garwood, who are running Mack Shelton's sheep in the montains north of this city, found the bones of a man. Bailey Shelton was making his way through a thick patchof brush to a spring where the discovery was made. The bones were closely examined and only a very few are missing. The place of the discovery is about three and one-half miles west of Mud springs, and only a few miles north of Elgin.
The bones are supposed to be those of Dave Woodward who was lost in the mountains seven years ago this coming winter.
The story of the Woodwards' disappearance is familiar to all who were living in Elgin at that time. In the winter of 1899 Mr. Woodward was living at the tollgate on the summit of the Blue mountains. During the winter he came to Elgin after a load of supplies. He reached Elgin, secured his supplies, which were loaded on a handsled, and started on snowshoes for his mountain home. The snow was very deep and large snow storms swept over the mountains after Mr. Woodward started on his return journy. He was quite an old man and its thought, lost his way and perished in the deep snow. Searching parties hunted the mountains over but no trace of the lost man was ever found.
The bones found are undoubtedly those of the lost man and his relatives at Milton have been notified of the finding.

Pioneer Dies, Milton Home
Milton-Freewater -- Mrs. Ed J. Loney, aged 80, well known pioneer, died at her home in Milton Thursday night. Her father, the late D. J. Woodward for many years operated the Tollagate resort.
Mrs. Loney was born in Sunmmerville, Ore., in 1868 and had lived in this community since 1878. She will be recalled as the former Mrs Florence Rouanzoin of Milton. For years after her father died she assisted her mother in the operation of the Tollgate resort.
Surviving are a son, Frank Rousanzoin, Fresno, Calif., and a daughter, Arlie Rouanzoin, Reno, Nev., a brother, W. L. Woodward, Milton and a sister Mrs. M. E. Spence of Milton.
David J. Woodward Mrs. Loney's father went to Elgin from Tollgate to get some supplies and left Elgin on snowshoes on his return trip and never seen again. A part of a broken snowshoe was found later by searches near Spout Springs but no other trace of Woodward was ever found. He was last seen alive January 1, 1896.

MRS. C.E. SPENCE DIES AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS
Mrs. C.E. (Carrie M.) Spence, member of the pioneer Woodward family and resident of Milton-Freewater for nearly her entire life died on Sunday afternoon in a Walla Walla hospital after a brief illness.
She was a daughter of W.E. Woodward, after whom Woodward Park at Tollgate is named., Woodward operated the tollgate across the Blue Mountains for many years, and disappeared without a trace on a trip to Elgin to buy supplies many years ago. She was born in Summerville, Oregon Feb. 12, 1872.
Carrie Woodward and C.E. Spence were married in Milton in 1892 and spent their entire married life in the area, having lived most of that time in the family home, one- quarter mile up the Walla Walla river.
Mrs. Spence was educated in Milton-Freewater schools. And was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, one son, Dale B. Spence of Walla Walla, who farms the home ranch; two grandchildren, Zelma Jeanne Hendricks, NYC, and James Spence, Walla Walla; and two great-grandchildren, Becky Ann and Barbara Lou Hendricks of NY.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Munselle Chapel with a host of friends attending. Buzz Wrinkle provided the music, and pall-bearers were Rhode Edwards, Robert Walden, Fred Milby, Wm. Carter, Fred Fullerton and Lloyd Chapman.

I just ran across your subject posting on the Frazier Farmstead Museum site. Carrie Woodward Spence was my grandfather, Walter Lewis Woodward's sister. You posting is very helpful to me for filling in missing information about the Spence family, both ancestors and descendants. I haven't printed it out yet as it is some 67 pages long but I did notice that in one place Carrie was listed as the daughter of a W.E. Woodward. I thing the reference was in a news article of her death. This is wrong. As noted elsewhere in you information, you correctly identified her father was David J. Woodward.

Longtime M-F Resident Dies
MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore. -- Charles E. Spence, a resident of Milton-Freewater for 85 years, died Tuesday morning at his home near the Walla Walla Rriver. he was 86 years of age.
A retired farmer, Spence was born Dec. 29, 1869 in Windsor, Calif. He has resided in Milton-Freewater since 1871, and was a member of the Frist Presbyterian Church here.
Survivors include one son, Dale Spence, Walla Walla; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Yates, Sun Valley, Calif.; two grandchildren, Mrs. Zelma Jeanne Hendricks, Seattle and James Spence, Walla Walla, and two great-grandchildren.

Celebrants. . . It was a quiet observance but an importnat one for Mr and Mrs C. E. Spence of Milton when their immediate family honored them at their home on the Walla Walla River last Sunday, the occasion being their 60th Wedding anniversary. . . Mr. and Mrs. Spence were married Jan 20, 1892 in Milton at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Woodward. She was Carrie M. Woodward. . . They are both Westeners, born and bred. Mr. Spence was born in Windsor, Calif., although he came to the Milton area as a child of two and Mrs. Spence was born at nearby Summerville, Ore. . Now they make their home, with a housekeeper, on the same place they've farmed these many years. They had two sons, Calrence (who died in February of 1939) and Dale B. Spence of Walla Walla. The Dale Spences were on hand for the observance along with MRs. Clarence (Frankie) Spence and her family, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Hendricks (Zelma Jean Spence) of California with their youngsters, Becky Ann and Barbara Lou, and James Howard Spence of Walla Walla . . . The elder Spences, in not too good health, live quietly at their home and the anniversary observance was restricted to the family for that reason.

Son of Early Day Toll Gate Operator, Woodward, Dies
MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore. -- Walter Lewis Woodward, 78, son of David G. Woodward, pioneer highway operator, died Monday night in a Walla Walla nursing home.
Woodward was born Nov. 17, 1874, at Tollgate. He had lived in Milton-Freewater 49 years.
It was Woodward's father who operated a toll gate on the road from Summerville to a point now occupied by Langdon lake from 1875. The father disappeared in February 1895, after leaving Elgin with a sled loaded with supplies in a raging blizzard. Only a broken snowshoe was recovered.
The U.S. Forest Service camp at Tollgate has been named for the elder Woodward.
Walter Woodward drove a stage coach over the Woodward road. His sister, Mrs. Charles Spence, Milton-Freewater, who survives, was three years old when the family moved to the headwaters of the Umatilla river in 1874, the year of Walter's birth. The senior woodward was instrumental in organizating the Summerville and Walla Walla Wagon Road Co. which operated from what is now Tollgate to Summerville. Woodward later bought out his partners and with his four sons operated the line until his disappearance.
Other survivors of Walter Woodward are: his wife, Mrs. Murnie Maud Woodward of Milton-Freewater; a son, Prof. Glenn Woodward of Walla Walla, member of the Whitman college faculty; the sister, Mrs. Charles Spence; and a grandson, David, Walla Walla.
Woodward was a member of the Maccabees and the Christian Church of Milton-Freewater.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday from a local chapel, the Rev. Truman Robbins officiating. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

Murnie Woodward
MILTON-FREEWATER -- Mrs. Murnie Woodward, 88, a resident of the area for nearly 70 years, died in a local nursing home Monday.
Mrs. Woodward was born April 9, 1882 in Osceola, Neb. and came to Milton-Freewater with her parents in 1901. She married Walter Woodward in March 1904. He died in 1953.
Surviving Mrs. Woodward are a son, Dr. Glenn J. Woodward of Walla Walla; a brother, Frank Grosvenor of Casper, Wyo.; a grandson Capt. David Woodward with the U.S. Air Force in Sumter, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and vault interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery with Dr. Edward V. Wright of the First Presbyterian Church of Walla Walla officiating.

C.L. Spence Dies In Walla Walla
C.L. Spence, prominent Walla Walla business man and native of Milton passed away at his home in Walla Walla, Thursday following a week's illness.
He was born in Milton, November 5th, 1892, the son of Mr. And Mrs. C.E. Spence of the Walla Walla river district. One-time local manager at the Western Auto Supply Co. he later operated the C.L. Spence Tire Service on West Alder street and some 2 weeks ago had purchased the Willard Service Station.
He was active in the affairs of the American Legion and the B.P.O.E. where he held the office of esteemed loyal knight. He was also affiliated with the Blue Mountain Lodge F. and A.M. and the Knights of Pythias.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Frankie Spence of Walla Walla ; a son and daughter, James Howard and Zelma Jean Spence; one brother, Dale B. Spence of Walla Walla; his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Charles E. Spence of Milton; and his father-in-law, Henry James of Dayton.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 pm Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Joseph C. Settle, rector, officiating. Burial was in the Masonic cemetery, where Walla Walla Lodge No. 287, B.P.O.E. was in charge of services.
