Notes for JOHN CHARLES MCBRIDE:

Walla Walla Union Bulletin (Walla Walla, Washington) > 1948 > December > 26 page 9

CHARLES McBRIDE IS VETERAN OF HORSE AND AUTO CAB BUSINESS

Walla Walla's Charles McBride is a man of distinction in the field of intra-city

transportation. He was one of the very first to operate an automotive taxi service in Walla Walla, and of even greater historical importance, he spent many years as a hack

driver in Walla Walla. To the best of his knowledge he is the only Walla Wallan who has the latter distinction.

Hacks, hack horses and livery stables constituted the basis of conversation between McBride and the r.r. on a recent day. One of the first definite impressions created by the review of old times was the fact that running a hack service in town or a livery stable for country driving, was big business.

The Walla Wallans primary associations with that business were tied in with the McBride brothers institution. Its operations were so extensive that the barns needed for the business at its peak filled one side of the block between First and Second streets on East Poplar. At one time the company operated 16 hacks, and ran a livery stable in addition.

The McBrides at one time had an outfit of eight hacks and eight span of hack horses, but a similar business involving eight hacks and teams which Bryan brothers operated - near ground occupied by the Drumheller building at Second and Alder - was eventually purchased by the McBrides.

It was entirely natural that Charles McBride should spend many years of his life caring for and driving horses. He knew horse flesh and he liked horses.

Weston was his first home after his arrival from Missouri, where the McBrides of Umatilla county and Walla Walla originated.

"We rode the narrow-gauge from Wallula to Blue Mountain Station and then walked to Weston," he related. "I worked in the harvest field for a while and later on ran a little livery stable in Weston.

Time and again before coming here to live I used to look in on the Bryan brothers stable. They ran a good stable and I learned a lot about the business from them."

The McBride brothers institution on Poplar street included Sam and Homer McBride, with Sam the Boss. At various times Allen Winanas and Alex McDonald among others, were interested in the business, but in time Sam McBride became the principal owner.

First livery stable in Walla Walla of which McBride has any personal knowledge was the Tom Tierney stable on Main street, about where the Liberty theatre now stands.

The McBride enterprise began at Fifth and Rose streets, where a livery barn only was operated. Later the firm moved up to Main street in the Liberty theatre district, and on its third move, went to the bigger and more permanent quarters on Poplar.

Another early livery occupied the ground floor where the Denny building stands at Second and Alder, and on upper floors was the Small opera house.

Hacks and hack horses were first-quality. The typical vehicle was rather elegant, sized to carry four passengers inside and a passenger or two with the driver in front, and on a higher level.

Hack service was in demand around the clock. For night driving each hack sported two ornate lamps. These were lighted by sperm candles, a spring under the candle

pushing upward to keep the candle light burning.

Harnesses were of the breeching type, but much lighter and neater that farm horses required.

Alder and South Second streets were among the longest thoroughfares in town.

Minimum fares for a time stood at 10 cents, but a man named John Hamilton ran what McBride calls a "gurney" and took fares for 21 cents. This forced the hacks to reduce minimum prices.

"A gurney was a two-wheeled rig with an inside seat for the driver. One good horse was used, and it had to be a good one, too" McBride explained.

Being a lover of good horse flesh, it was natural that Charles McBride didn't like the treatment many livery teams got from their drivers. He teased and coaxed his brother Sam to get out of the livery business, and finally won his point.

"Livery horses were lighter than hack horses, but when somebody hired a livery team and drove it too hard in hot weather, or too far without proper feeding and care, the animals were killed off by abuse and misuse. I have known men to drive a team hard to Eureka flat and then tie them up to a post until it was time to come home. The company was better off when it got rid of livery service."

Drivers like McBride were supposed to wear a uniform of navy blue, with a cap something like soldiers wore. When rubber-tired vehicles appeared on the market there was a great to-do. Everybody wanted to ride in a rubber-tired hack, and nothing else. The company soon re-fitted its equipment to conform to the "new Look" expected of a fashionable hack.

There was no standard pattern for color or breed of hack horses. A good horse was the only specification.

McBride contends it must have been pretty close to 1902-03 when the hack business began to fade and be replaced by automotive taxes. The McBrides disposed of their business by selling hacks and buggies where they could.

"Jim Crawford had a fine span of horses in his lumberyard service which I wanted to drive, and went to him for a job," McBride recalled. "I told Jim what I wanted but he turned me down and told me instead to go buy me a taxi. He reminded me that I knew the town and the people knew me.

"After Jim's advice I went over to the bank building and spent several hours turning it over in my mind. I decided to do what Jim told me to do.

"I got hold of a Ford. I must have worn out eight or nine cars while I was in the business. For a period of 20 years or more I had my stand at the Book Nook corner, and kept it there until I retired from active business nine or 10 years ago."

The large family of McBride sons has now been reduced to three - Charles in Walla Walla and "Purd" and Tim who farmed and ran livestock on a big scale near Weston many years, and then sold out to buy an irrigated ranch near Umapine.

"Purd" and Tim know a thing or two about beef cattle, but it's "Charlie" who, among the living McBrides, best knows horseflesh.

To the south of this building was a livery stable, in later years (1920's) operated by Lafe McBride, who also had the contract for transporting the mail and passengers to and from a depot a mile north of town. His vehicle used for this service until the coming of the Model-T Ford was a horse-drawn coach.

Harry A. McBride, teacher, district 13, Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, is a native of Ohio, born in Perry County, January 5, 1842, a son of William McBride, who is now deceased. He was a native of County Down, Ireland, but reared in America from the age of five years. He was a farmer by occupation, and the subject of this sketch was reared on the home farm to the same pursuit. He received good educational advantages, attending in his boy hood the common schools of Stockwell, and later the Stockwell Collegiate Institute, supplemented by a course at the Iron City Commerical College of Philadephia, Pennsylvania, from which institution he graduated in 1865. He has been a resident of Tippecanoe County most of the time since 1855, his parents settling in Lauramie Township in that year. He began his career as a teacher in the fall of 1863, which he has since followed with the exception of three winter terms. He has taught eleven terms in the Monroe school, No. 11, where he attended school when a boy, and wherever he has followed his profession he has become popular. He uses the latest and most approved normal methods, and is classed among the most successful teachers of the county. mr. McBride was married March 19, 1868, to Miss Samantha McDole of Tippecanoe County, and of the two children born to this union but one is living, a daughter, named Cora A. Mrs. McBride died February 14, 1879, and February 26, 1884, Mr. McBride was again united in marriage to Miss Anna V Anderson, a daughter of George W. Anderson, her father being deceased. Mrs. McBride is a member of the Baptist church. Mr. McBride was appointed deputy sheriff in 1872, and served as such during that year under Sheriff Murdock. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity.

His wife died December 14, 1879, and he later was married to Miss Ann B Anderson, who, with the daughter, survives. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and for the past few years was a United Brethren minister. The funeral will be held from the home in Clark’s Hill Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock. Interment in the Baptist cemetery. (Lafayette, Indiana, Journal & Courier June 11, 1923, page 12)
