Notes for John G. Staats:

Annotation from St. Paul John Staatz(Staats)

The record for John Staatz is unfortunately incomplete. It is known that two Staats men, Stephen and Isaac, probably brothers, came from New York State in 1851 and settled in Polk County. John was no doubt the son of one of them. His wife, Marie Toupin, was the granddaughter of Madame Dorion and also of Andre Longtain. Just for your information.  When we started, I followed Stephen Staats family.  I thought his John was the right one, it isn't. I have more on them than I wish. I've only found one record on Issac Staats.   Oregon Archives: Staats, Isaac 12-31-1889 Estate Polk Genealogical 0572

THEY are not related to G John Staats as for as I can tell.   Anyway, just listing both lines for your reference.  IF I ever get back to the archives I will look up some of these. The estate and naturalization papers would probable give the best information.

To look it up in Familysearch use the name John FOPAR

Staats are listed as the house before the Toupin.

To me, the actual handwriting looks like Topan.  But if I'm correct, his sister is next door.  You may have him listed as Jean Baptiste Toupin.  I do.

Sorry, censuses spellings can be really bad, and indexes worse.  But sometimes they can lead to real answers or bigger confusion.
