Toupin, Jean Baptiste-Toupin was the third husband of Madame Dorion; he outlived her by twelve years. Besides his children Francois and Marie Anne, he seems to have had other children by another woman, as Jean Toupin, Jr., was godfather to a relative in 1871. According to one historian, Toupin had been an interpreter at Fort Nex Perce since 1821, a man of Work's crew, "quarrelsome, unreliable". He was a messenger "back and forth" following the Whitman massacre.
