SOLOMON RADER is the eldest in a family of fifteen children, nine boys and six girls-born to William and Elizabeth (Murphy) Rader. Mr. Rader commenced life for himself at the age of twenty years. The first summer worked on a farm at $10.25 per month, with board, washing and keeping of horse thrown in ; the horse, however, had to be worked two days in each week. The next summer he moved to Cass County, near Logansport, and chopped cord-wood at 31 1/4 cents per cord and board, and the following summer he returned to the home of his boyhood, in Rush County, Ind., and spent the summer in peddling books and oilcloths. The next year he spent on a farm, and in March, 1852. he started to the Territory of Oregon, by way of Cincinnati and St. Joseph, Mo. He left St. Joseph by ox-team, on the 27th of April, 1852, and arrived at Jacksonville, Ore., on the 22d of September. Mr. Rader engaged in mining, but served for a time in the Rogue River Indian war. In June, 1852, he, came to Princeton Township ; his father, in the meantime, had removed from Rush to White County. Mr. Rader was married first to Miss Mary E. MeAhron, and to their union were born three children-a pair of twins, that died unnamed, and Marion. Mrs. Rader died October 22, 1853, and Mr. Rader was married again January 14, 1855, and to this union have been born two children-one infant that died unnamed, and C. M. Mr. and Mrs. Rader are members of the Baptist Church, and he was reared a Democrat, but is now a thorough Greenbacker.

Walla Walla
Cary Melvin Rader, a leading member of the bar of Walla Walla, engaged in
general practice, was born in Carroll county, Indiana, July 27, 1868. His father,
Solomon Rader, was also. a native of the Hoosier state, born October 8, 1827. He
devoted ,his life to farming in early ..manhood and afterward took up merchan-
dising. He was a veteran of the Indian wars of the northwest and crossed the
plains in 1852. He participated in the Modoc and Rogue River wars of 1853
and 1857. Later he returned to Indiana and became actively identified
with its agricultural and commercial interests. But longing for the west he
came to Walla Walla, Washington, in 19Ol, there remmnmg until his death, which
occurred December 2, 1912. His wife, who bore the maiden name of Martha
Ann Stewart, was born in Indiana, May 3 ° , 1827, and is still living at the
notable old age of ninety years, her home being in Walla WMla.
Cary M. Rader was the only child of that marriage. He obtained a com-
mon school education in his native state and afterward attended the Central
Normal College at Danville, Indiana, where he pursued a law course. He
was there graduated on the 28th of July, 1891, and was admitted to the bar,
but in May, 1892, came to Walla .W.alla. and has s,nce .been an active rep.re-
sentative of the legal profession of thas caty. He entered into partnership'with
Senator Poindexter, with-whom he was associated for about four years, after
which he practiced alone for a few years, and then became a partner of Frank
B Sharpstein. Their connection continued for four years and Mr. Rader was
then alone in practice for a brief period. He afterward entered into partner-
ship with W. R. King, who later became a supreme judge of Oregon, and upon
the dissolution of that partnership he became connected with E. F. Barker,
forming the present firm of Rader & Barker. This association has since been
maintained and the firm occupies a very prominent position at the Walla Walla
bar. Along with those qualities indispensable to the lawyer Mr. Rader brought
to the starting point of his legal career certain rare gifts, including forceful-
ness of expression and a strong personality. He possesses a keen, rapid, log-
ical mind, plus the business sense, and a ready capacity for hard work. He
has, too, an excellent presence, an earnest, dignified manner and marked strength
of character, which, combined with a thorough grasp of the law and the abil-
ity to accurately apply its principles, has made him a most effective advocate
and a wise counselor. While continuing in general law practice, he has spe-

Dear Jim,
I'm so excited I found your site!! I have several questions
for you though. Do you verify your information or keep track
of who provided it? I have found some inaccurate information
and would like to correct it.
My great-grandmother was Twilla Pearl Rader, born 11-21-1882 in
Camden, Illinois and she most certaintly did not die before
1900. She is number 1075 on your index. I have her obituary
sitting in front of me. Her parents were William Henry Rader
and Laura J. Schuler Rader(taken from Grandma's family Bible).
"Twilla Pearl Rader was born at Camden, Illinois, November 21,
1882. She was graduated from the State Teachers College at
Macomb, Illinois and after teaching school for several years
came to South Dakota. She and Frederick A. Vollenweider were
married March 18, 1908 and they made their home near Hitchcock
for 31 years, coming to Huron in 1939. Her home here was at
1240 First Street Southwest. Mrs. Vollenweider was a member
of the Methodist Church at Broadland, the Women's Relief Corps,
the WHO Club and the Invincible Club. She is survived by one
son and one daughter: Howard L. Vollenweider and Mrs. Helen
Lorraine Jorgensen; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Taylor, Rushville,
Illinois, Mrs. Don(Donna?) Heggins and Mrs. Stella Greene,
Quincy, Illinois, one grandchild, Robert Eugene Jorgensen,
Huron. Mr. Vollenweider preceded her in death August 13,
1930."
Howard and his wife had no children. Howard died in 1976. My
dad is an only child. I have one sister, Debra. My husband,
Dale and I have 4 children. Grandma will be 80 years old this
summer.
What does (Wid. Miller) stand for? How do I sign up for your
newsletter? Do you maintain addresses of those who provide
information, so that I may contact them? Thank you for your
help. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
