1826 - 1899

From History of Texas, Published in 1896

J.L. Elam is now living retired at his pleasant home in Cresson, after an industrious and well spent life, now enjoying the fruits of his former labors. A native of McNairy County, Tennessee, he was born February 20, 1826, a son of Andrew and Polly (Laughlin) Elam, who were farming people of middle Tennessee. On the old family homestead our subject was reared to manhood, aiding in the labors of the fields and becoming familiar with all the duties that fall to the lot of the agriculturist.

Mr. Elam spent the days of his boyhood and youth with his parents and continued at their home until his marriage, which was celebrated on the 24th of December, 1844, Miss Mary Jane Williams, also a native of Tennessee, becoming his wife. For a year after his marriage our subject worked on his father's farm and then purchased a tract of land, which he continued to cultivate until his removal to the Lone Star State. This occurred in 1855. He made the journey with a mule team and wagon and after a month of travel took up his abode in Fannin County, where he resided for a year. He was a resident of Johnson County until 1889, and then moved to Hood County. In 1856 it was, however, a part of Johnson County. He pre-empted a tract of land on Staten Branch, which he cleared and improved, making it a highly cultivated tract. He carried on farming and stock-raising until 1889, and became the owner of three hundred and fifty-four acres. His business was well conducted, and his enterprise, energy, good management and perseverance brought to him a handsome competence, which now enables him to lay aside the heavier cares of his earlier manhood and rest in the enjoyment of the fruits of his former toil.

Mr. Elam's labors were interrupted by his service on the frontier during the Civil War, but with the exception of that period he continued his work without cessation until 1889, when he removed to Cresson, where he has since lived retired. It is the fitting crown of a well spent life and his success is justly merited.

Mr. and Mrs. Elam have one child, Mahala Jane, now the wife of Jefferson Merrifield, of Stephens County, Texas. Mrs. Elam is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and an estimable lady whose many excellent qualities have gained her a large circle of friends. Mr. Elam belongs to the Masonic fraternity, having been made a Mason in Acton, Texas, in 1869. These worthy people have traveled life's journey together as man and wife for fifty-one years, their mutual love and confidence increasing as the years have passed by, bringing with them the joys and sorrows, the adversity and prosperity, which checker the lives of all. In a pleasant home in Cresson they are now spending their days among many friends who have for them the highest esteem.

James L. Elam died February 15, 1899 and is buried next to his wife in Cresson Cemetery in Johnson County, Texas.

JOHNSON COUNTY, TEXAS

Hood County was organized and created from Johnson County and a small portion of Erath County in 1866. Somervell County was created from Hood County and Bosque County in 1875.

On November 24, 1863, the Texas Legislature passed a Joint Resolution stating the government pledged "support and maintenance of [the soldiers'] families during their absence from home." In accordance with this Resolution, the "Act to Support the Families and Dependents of Texas Soldiers" passed on December 16, 1863. The Act set aside $1 million annually to be paid to the "families, widows, and dependents of soldiers currently serving in State or Confederate forces, or of soldiers killed or disabled in service." Each Chief Justice of a Texas county, on or before March 1st in 1864 and 1865, submitted lists of soldiers and the number of their dependents eligible for relief. The County Clerk administered the money distributed to the county.

The information submitted varied somewhat from each county. While the numbers of dependents were always given, additional information might include: soldier's name; if currently in service; disabled or killed in service; military unit; acting head of household.

The original Confederate Indigent Families Lists (1863-1865) are located at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) in Austin, Texas. An on-line search can be performed by county or surname. However, additional information is not available on-line. In order to preserve the original documents, TSLAC recommends utilizing the book Confederate Indigent Families Lists of Texas 1863-1865, transcribed by Linda Mearse, that can be obtained by interlibrary loan.

OBIT - Valley Herald ? - 1956

WELL KNOWN RESIDENT SAM ATKINS DIES

Samuel Houston Atkins, much respected and loved resident of Milton-Freewater for 72 years, died on Monday, March 5, at a Walla Walla hospital at the age of 90.

Mr. Atkins was born on Nov. 2, 1865, in Grandbury, Tex., and came to Milton at the age of 19 with his late uncle, A.M. ELam. He worked for Elam on his ranch for many years, returning to Texas only once for a very brief visit.

He spent his younger years breaking saddle horses in this and surrounding communities. He was an excellent horseman and could gentle the roughest colt, never allowing it to buck, although he used to relate that some of them would "run a little."

His favorite pastime was dancing, and he was a familiar figure at community dances. Until the past two months he reguarly attended dances of the stateline Grange and Pioneer Posse.

Atkins was a charter member of Hercules Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias, and very active in that orgainization, regularly attending meetings, dinners and dances.

Very interested in Milton-Freewater affairs, Mr. Atkins had an outstanding memory and kept many clippings of activities here. He had an uncanny memory of dates and places.

He is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Audrey Lee Seachriest, Mrs. Hattie Lusk of Clebourne, Tex. and several grand nieces and nephews. Also surviving are several cousins in Walla Walla and Milton-Freewater. Atkins never married.

Funeral Services were held in the Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 7, at 2 pm with Rev. Donald Campbell officiating. Mrs. Donald Campbell and Mrs. Melvin Bennett sang "Sweet Bye and Bye" and "Beautiflul Isle" accompanied by organist. Mrs. Fred Etling.

Honorary pallbearers were Everett Miller, Earl Frazier, Lyle Coe and Roy Frazier. Active pallbearers were W.S. Caverhill, Robert Walden, Robert Lee, Wayne Brinker, Jasper Sams and Ray Kaser.

Ritualisic services were conducted by Hercules Lodge No. 51, Knights of Pythias and interment was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.

ANDREW M. ELAM

One of the pioneer agriculturists of Umatilla County, whose labor for many years contributed toward the development of this section of the state, is Andrew M. Elam, who is now living retired in his home in Milton, enjoying the fruits of his former industry. He is a native of Tennessee, his birth having occurred in McNary County on the 4th of June, 1840, a son of Andrew and Margaret Elam.

Andrew M. Elam spent his boyhood days in Tennessee, where he received what education the times afforded. He later left the parental roof and started out into the world on his own account, going to Texas, where he engaged in the stock business at Ft. Worth and the Brazos river country. He enlisted in the Confederate cavalry. He participated in some of the important battles of Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and at the close of the war returned to Granbury, Texas, and resumed the stock business. In the spring of 1865 he was married and a year later started out for the northwest. The journey was made overland with mule teams, requiring six months to make the trip, and on the way they experienced many Indian scares and Mr. Elam clearly recalls the attack on Ft. Kearny, although he did not participate in any of the fighting. Arriving in Oregon, he settled where Milton now stands, remaining there for one year. He then spent eight years in Portland, conducting a livery stable, and after selling this business returned to Milton and purchased sixty acres of land. He later bought an additional eighty-acre tract, to which he added from time to time, until he was owner of five hundred and sixty acres, well improved. For eight years Mr. Elam was active in the conduct of his farm, which he now leases. Mr. Elam was the first mayor of the town of Milton, being elected to that office when the town was organized. During his administration he promoted many plans for the improvements of the community. He has been prominent in the business, as well as the agricultural circles of Milton, and was one of the organizers of the Peacock Milling Company, which he managed for some fourteen years and also traveled for the company. He built the Elam block, the Farmers Security Bank and other buildings and was one of the organizers of the First National Bank, of which he has been a director since its organization. The success of the bank seemed to assured from the outset and its business has increased until it now extends over a large territory. Mr. Elam owns one of the fine residences in Milton and is also in possession of much town property. He has seen the country grow from a vast prairie to a highly cultivated farm land and during the early days of his residence here he often participated in Indian troubles and skirmishes which took place on the very land where now stand prosperous and progressive towns.

On November 8, 1865, Mr. Elam was married to Miss Martha Frazier, a daughter of William and Paulina (Williams) Frazier, and a native of Harding county, Tennessee. Mrs. Elam removed to Texas with her parents at an early date and later crossed the plains with them. She and her husband first settled in Milton with her parents, and there her parents resided until death. The father of Mrs. Elam purchased government land and he wa foremost in establishing the town of Milton. He built a log home on some of this land, donated a sufficient amount of ground for a post office, and gave seven acres for the Miller mill. For some years previous to his removal to Milton Mr. Elam ran stock over to the Snake river country. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Elam: Mrs. J. H. Piper of Milton, and Bertie E.

Since age conferred upon Mr. Elam the right of franchise he ha been a stanch supporter of the democratic party, in the activities of which he ha taken a prominent part. His fraternal affiliation is with the Masons. Mr. Elam is a public-spirited citizen, well known throughout the county as one of its most enterprising men and at all times ready to give the benefit of his influence to any measure seeking the advancement of the best interests of his state and community.

La Verne (Reese) Zimmerman: Zella's husband Willie Williams died in Lostine, OR in Nov 1918. I don't know if they were making their home there or were going to continue on to Freewater, OR. The story goes that Willie had died of the flu and Zella and baby Melvin were very sick. Elizabeth, Zella's mother came to Lostine to take care of them but the person taking care of Zella and Melvin told Elizabeth to go home. If Elizabeth came in that she would leave cause she was not going to take of another person. Elizabeth stayed and the care giver left.

Piper attended local schools and graduated from McLoughlin Union High School in 1944. During the graduation ceremonies, he was traveling aboard a transport ship to Hawaii during WWII. Upon arrival in Hawaii, he was assigned to the LST 124 where he served his country for 22 months in the South Pacific. During that time, his ship was involved in the battles of Tinian, Saipan and they transported supplies, trucks, tanks and wounded to many South Pacific Islands including Guadalcanan, Tillagi, Bora Bora, Bouganville, Samoa and many others. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he attended Oregon State University.

He married his high school sweetheart, Louise Samuel in Hood River, OR., Aug. 17, 1947. The couple settled in Walla Walla where he was employed by the Zellerbach Paper Company. He was later transferred to La Grande, OR to work in sales. In 1951, the family moved to M-F and he began his life's work as a wheat rancher. He loved the land and did everything possible to be a good custodian of the century farm with which he had been entrusted. Piper was the fourth generation to farm the Piper/Elam ranch. He retired in 1991, due to ill health, after 40 years of active farming.

As a small child he developed a great love for horses. He and his brother Don rode "Old Button" everwhere they went. "Button" was a retired pack-horse and whenever a child fell off his back, he would stop and patiently wait for them to climb back on. This love of horses continued into adulthood and he owned and bred Quarter Horses. He was very fond of rodeo and participated as a calf roper in his younger years. Later he showed cuttling horses in the Northwest and South and derived a great deal of pleasure in that activity. Piper was a loyal supporter of the Pendleton Round-Up and attended their show each year for 54 consecutive years. During the Pea Festival, he, mounted on horseback was in charge of getting each horse exhibit into the parade at the proper time. He did this job every year until the Pea Festival was discontinued. He was also a co-chairman of the horse show that was held during the early days of the Pea Festival. He sold the white horse, to the movie studio, that was used in the movie "The Legend of the Lone Ranger".

Piper loved to hunt and fish. He was very proud of his children and five grandchildren.

Through the years he served this community by participating on the District #31 School Budget Committee, was appointed by the Director of the Oregon Department of Agriculture to serve as a member of the East Umatilla County Chemical Control District Board, was a Life Member of the Walla Walla Kennel Club, American Angus Association and National Quarter Horse Association. He was appointed and served as a member of the Milton-Freewater Planning Commission and was a Community Committeeman for the Agricultural Stabilization Committee for several years. He served as President of the Milton Ditch Company for eight years and was the second president of the Mac-Hi FFA Chapter. He joined the First Christian Church in M-F in 1937, and has been a member since that time. He was a member of the Milton-Freewater Historical Society (Frazier Farmstead Museum), BPOE #2146, American Legion Post #24, was president of the Pioneer Posse and had been a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He also was an Agriculture 4-H leader of a livestock club.

Survivors include his wife Louise Piper at the home; a son and daughter-in-law Rick and Vickie Piper of M-F; a daughter and son-in-law Kris and Tim Barry of Walla Walla; five grandchildren, Johna Piper, Seth Piper Heidi Piper all of M-F and Patrick Barry and Connor Barry of Walla Walla.

Piper was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Don Piper.
