ILAS1 COE was born 28 Jun 1814 in Pennsylvania, and died 28 Feb 1901 in Milton, Umatilla, OR. He married CATHERINE WALTER 26 Feb 1835 in Wayne Co.,Ohio. She was born 19 May 1809 in Westmoreland Co., PA, and died 24 Oct 1903 in Milton, Umatilla, OR.Notes for S
ILAS COE:Milton Eagle Vol.111 No.46 December 6th, 1889 - A Rich Ledge . . . During the past summer, while visiting relatives in Butter Creek, in the S.W. part of this county, Uncle Silas Coe discovered a well-defined gold quartz ledge at the head of the stream, in what is known 'as the Pot'. Samples of the float rock were sent to New York City for assay, and the result showed $100 to the ton. The ore is free working. The ledge is 12 feet wide and can be traced for a distance of one mile. A short distance from this new dicovered ledge is the "Yellow Jacket" mine operated by one man with an Arasta, who makes from $8 to $10 per day. On Sunday last, Mr Coe departed from Milton for his claim, and while there will arrange for its development. The famous "Cracker Creek" mine in Baker County yields $60 per ton, the quartz being similar to this newly discovered ledge.

Death Claims Mrs. Susan Coe
Mrs. Susan Henrietta Frazier Coe, pioneer resident of Milton, died Saturday afternoon at her home at the age of 89. She came to Milton in November, 1867, with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William S. Frazier, who farmed the land on which Milton now stands.
Her mother was Rachel Paulina Williams of Alabama; her father was born in North Carolina. The two were married in Tennessee, moved to Arkansas, and then to Texas, where Mrs. Coe was born in Jackson City on April 20, 1857.
The Fraziers and another family started for the Willamette valley by mule teams in April of 1867, and arrived in the Grande Ronde valley that fall. The Fraziers decided to stay in the Walla Walla district, living for a year on the Ingle place near Stateline and then moving to Milton.
They farmed land which is now the south end of Milton along the river. Her father plotted the original town of Milton there. At the age of 15 she was married to Samuel Kester Coe, who had come to the district shortly after the Fraziers. They had 12 children, of whom seven survive.
They are Mrs. C. H. Harris, Pendleton, Mrs. W. R. Craig, Portland, Arthur, Elmo and Harold Frazier all of Milton, Ernest Frazier of Portland, and Frank Frazier of Pendleton. She is also survived by a brother, William H. Frazier of Milton, 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In 1875 Mrs. Coe joined the newly-established Methodist church in Milton, an she was also a member of the G.A. R. ladies. She was chosen as queen-mother of the fiftieth anniversary meeting of the Umatilla County Pioneer association in 1942.

Five Generations
As these lines are written, Susan Frazier Coe lies gravely ill at her home in Milton. Since this page a few weeks ago noted that Mrs. Coe had reached the nineties bracket in her life, further distinction has come to her. Since Susan K. Anderson was born in Surf, Calif., a few days ago, Mrs. Coe has become a great-great-grandmother though now too ill to properly appreciate the distinction.
The family tree which involves this five-generation group is: Mrs. Coe; Margaret Coe Campbell; Veril Campbell of Lompoc, Calif.; Phillis Campbell Anderson, Surf, Susan K. Anderson, Surf.

UDGE ALBA G. BARTHOLOMEW:An illustrated history of Umatilla County, page 501 and 502
HON. A. G. BARTHOLOMEW – It is exceedingly gratifying to have the privilege to recount, although space commands it to be but in epitomized form, the worthy deeds of one who pressed to the front and offered his services in defense of our beloved country and his blood, if need so demand, to keep unsullied the stars of freedom, when base fratricidal strife sought to wreck our union and wrest the noble banner from its pedestal of honor and dignity. To the subject of this sketch belongs the distinction of being one of the brave ones who thus faced the cannon unflinchingly, having enlisted in the One Hundred and Thirty-second Illinois Infantry in may, 1864, when he was but eighteen years of age, the regiment being commanded by Colonel Pickett and the company by Captain Frank E. Chase, in which he served until the close of the war. Following this he went to Memphis, Tennessee, in the employ of a milling company, operating as bookkeeper there for three years, until May 12, 1867, then went to tilling the soil and later took a position as knight of the grip for two years, until 1881, at which time he came to Umatilla county, locating at Milton and Opening up a farm there. Two years succeeding this he came to Morrow county and embarked in the stock business until 1896, when he was chosen by the people to act as county judge, which for four years he did with a display of justice and impartiality and wisdom that won the confidence and called forth the commendation of the people, who invited him in 1900 by their franchises to remain in the same position for another term. In his native town in Illinois he served as justice of the peace for twelve years, being nearly all the time that he resided there after becoming of age.
G. Bartholomew was born to Ambrose and Aurelia Bartholomew in Illinois, July 21, 1845. being reared in the same place and gaining a competent education from the public schools, which was later supplemented by a thorough course in the well-known Bryant & Stratton Business College, of Chicago. The Judge is fraternally affiliated with the G. A. R. and the I.O.O.F., being a prominent member of both institutions, where he is very popular.
The marriage of Mr. Bartholomew and Miss Mary A. Coe, a native of Ohio, occurred in Illinois on October 16, 1867, and to them have been born the following children; Harry E., stockman; Edwin E., stockman; Walter, with the Ayers Cattle Company; Charles H., stockman; Jennie, wife of J.L. Marin, of Heppner; Eva E., wife of E. E. Saling, of this county; Fred C. The Judge is a man of fine executive ability and keen discernment, having ever displayed a breadth of mind and public spirit that mark him as a leader and benefactor, while in his official capacity his work is always stamped with that sterling principle of right and justice, coupled with efficiency, that display an acumen and integrity both commendable and gratifying, and quite worthy of the acknowledgments of appreciation so generously bestowed by the citizens of the county.

Subject: Request for Campbell Research
Dear Diane,
I really appreciate your assistance in finding any information about Joseph Frankling Campbell (aka Sheriff Joe) that is available to you. I am particularly interested to know if you have anything that lists names of his parents, siblings, or other relatives. I would love a copy of the photograph of him that you have--even a picture of the bullet and a short paragraph about it would be very interesting. Joseph's great-grandson has quite a lot of family history information about the Coe line already, but nearly nothing about the Campbell line--that is mainly where his interest lies, so ANYTHING you have have be greatly appreciated.Supposedly Joe's father's name was Franklin Campbell and his mother's name was Sarah Clark--both of the parents, and Joe were from Ohio. Perhaps this will help.
My mailing address is:

Please let me know the cost for any photocopies you may make--including what it costs to make a good copy of the photograph you have of Joe. Also, please send me contact information in order to send a donation for your research efforts.
Thank you,
Jennifer

From Sarah,
I found one possibility, of his parents being William and Sarah (Boyer) Campbell. William's father's name is Johnathan Clark Campbell. But the Joseph Campbell is consistently written Joseph H Campbell. Without some other evidence, I sure don't want to go there.

(This is possible, as a picture in file taken around 1880 by photographer Ferguson, in Talmadge, NE.)
