BOWLUS CEMETERY
MILTON, OREGON

Located East of Milton-Freewater at base of Government Mountain on the old stagecoach road from Walla Walla to the North Fork of the Walla Walla River. It is now farmed by Tremayne Rae. The earliest grave found here was Alexis E. Osborn in 1874. One plot of sunken stones show the 8 graves of the J.M. & Martha Willard children who all died in 1878 of diphtheria.
The cemetery was located on the original Lewis Bowlus Farm and according to the State of Oregon Department of Transportation cemetery survey published in 1978 it is listed as starting in 1873; has 25 – 100 burials; 5 acres in size; and abandoned.
The records in this survey was taken from inscriptions from tombstones, family records, newspaper accounts and obits and other genealogical sources. No records have been found of this cemetery and from the size - we assume there are many more burials. This list compiled in 1979.
